    Emirates Emergency Landing at Lusaka

What: Emirates Airbus A330-200 em route from Lusaka to Dubai

    When: Oct 21, 2012
Why: After takeoff, the flight developed a technical problem.

The pilot returned to the airport to make a safe landing at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport. The plane continued to the gate where passengers disembarked. Why: On approach to Toronto, the pilot entered a holding pattern due to bad weather, but on approach, was alerted to windshear, and made another precautionary go-round due to gusty conditions. They diverted to Ottowa where they made a safe landing. the plane touched down safely shortly after 5 p.m.

Dubai -Toronto Flight, First Ever A380 Diverts to and Lands in Ottowa

What: Emirates airbus A380 en route from Dubai to Toronto
    Where: Ottowa
    When: June 1, 2012
    Who: 530+ passengers
Why: After taking off from Dubai, the pilot encountered problems. In fact, pilots circled Toronto before they diverted to Ottowa, where they made a safe landing with firefighters and paramedic emergency services on standby. The plane, the first A380 ever to land at Ottawa International Airport, touched down at 5 pm.

Pilots diverted to Ottowa because Ottawa International Airport has a 10,000-foot runway. An A380 requires at least 9,875 feet.

According to Global Toronto, the jet nearly ran out of fuel after being rerouted due to torrential rains in Toronto.

The flight eventually made it to Toronto at 9:00 pm.

What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A380-800 en route from Bangkok to Hong Kong
    Where: Hong Kong
    When: Apr 7th 2012,
Why: Passengers on the Emirates flight disembarked on to the runway after a fast landing where two main tires burst.

Passengers smelled the burning rubber and reported that they saw sparks.

On landing, the brakes locked up, which pretty eliminated the tires and part of the wheel (termed an anti-skid failure.) As you can see in the snapshot, the wheels were ground flat by the friction.

The friction just pours off the pavement in the youtube clip. No injuries were reported.

    Where: Capetown
    When: Jan 4 2012 1.55pm
    Who: 243 passengers
Why: After takeoff, the gear did not retract and (as was observed) the gear doors remained open. We presume the pilots did a fly-by that was the source of the visual conformation of the issue at hand.

An hour and a half after takeoff, with emergency crews on standby, the pilots landed back in Capetown (3.20pm), and was towed.

Passengers were provided hotel accommodations. The replacement flight was scheduled for Jan 5, 2012.

    Turbulence over Kochi

What: Emirates Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Dubai to Kochi India
    Where: Bangalore
    When: Apr 25th 2010
Who: 350 passengers and 14 crew
Why: Prior to landing at Kochi, the plane encountered severe turbulence which resulted in 20 people being hospitalized. At the time of the turbulence, baggage fell from overhead hatches, and those not belted slammed upward. The flight landed at Kochi and was removed from service for ten hours. All injuries were minor.

Two theories have been presented involving the turbulence. Meteorologists speculate that “the aircraft could have flown into an air pocket.”

Another theory is that “…World Area Forecast centre wind/temperature charts did not reveal thunderstorm cloudd, but it showed a slight wind shear condition off the coast of Mangalore. At 35,000 feet, the chart shows strong westerly wind with a speed of 60 kts dropping to 25-30 kts. It’s one of the indicators of clear air turbulence (CAT).’’

There are reports that say the plane suffered some damage after dropping from 20,000 to 5,000 feet.

Why: Two hours after takeoff, the flight plunged for about ten seconds, on encountering severe turbulence which injured twenty. Trolleys, bags, passengers and flight attendants flew about and impacted the ceiling; and interior elements of the plane incurred damage (panels, wires, seating, etc…). A passenger on board was a doctor, and he treated the injuries. On landing at Durban, a dozen individuals were treated at the airport, and eight were taken to area hospitals. Injuries included a broken hand and several spinal injuries.

Turnaround for the flight was just over 4 hours.

Preliminary Conclusion of Melbourne-March 20 Tail strike

What: Airbus A340 en route for Dubai
    Where: Melbourne airport
    When: March 20
Who: 257 passengers and 18 crew
Why: Incorrect weight data on an in-flight computer caused the tail of an Emirates plane to scrape the runway during take-off. ( The Australia’s air safety regulator concluded that the weight was incorrectly entered on the onboard computer which resulted in thrust setting and take-off reference speeds lower than those required for the aircraft?s actual weight. (The weight entered was 112 tons too light.) The incident caused substantial damage to the plane’s tail. The tail ripped out at least one runway light, and dislodged a flight data recorder at the plane’s rear. Manual correction of thrust caused the rear fuselage to scrape the tarmac. The Emirates investigation is considering a flight computer double-entry system “to protect against single data source entry error.”

Update: Emirates Airbus Tailstrike in Melbourne

The new headline is Emirates pilots resign. They “submitted their resignations.”

    George’s Point of View

    Curious to see why?

No matter what the pilots did or didn’t do, the tail should not scrape the run way on take off.

Good thing it didn’t catch fire and blow up.
