  • Press Release: Aviation and climate change the focus of ICAO Environmental Colloquium

    From 11 to 14 May, strategies and programmes of ICAO, industry, academic/research institutions and international organizations to harness technological, scientific and economic solutions in the global fight against climate change will be reviewed. This includes key developments from the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP/15) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, as well as two ICAO events – the Conference on Aviation and Alternative Fuels and the 8th Meeting of the Committee on Aviation Environmental Protection.

    The Colloquium provides a timely context for the exchange of views on aviation and climate change in anticipation of environment-related discussions and high-level decision-making at the 37th Session of the ICAO Assembly in September 2010.

    A one-day tutorial on 11 May will present a broad overview of aviation greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and familiarize participants with the vocabulary and concepts used in the description, measurement, regulation, and management of aviation GHG emissions.

    American Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Calgary International Airport

    American Airlines flight AA-263 made an emergency landing at Calgary International Airport in Alberta, Canada, on October 11th.

    The plane heading from Dallas, Texas, to Beijing, China, was initially diverted to Edmonton International Airport, Alberta, Canada, after a passenger suffered a medical emergency. However, the crew subsequently reported a mechanical issue and decided to divert to Calgary.

    The plane landed safely.

    New Gulfstream G650 Completes 1st Flight

    SAVANNAH, Ga., November 25, 2009 — Gulfstream Aerospace, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics (NYSE: GD), today announced that its newest business jet and the flagship of its fleet, the ultra-large-cabin, ultra-long-range Gulfstream G650, successfully completed its first flight.

    Flown by experimental test pilot Jake Howard and senior experimental test pilot Tom Horne, the G650 took off from Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport at 1:41 p.m. local time today with flight engineer Bill Osborne on board. Because pilots were alerted to a slight vibration in a landing-gear door, they curtailed the testing regimen as a precautionary measure. The aircraft landed 12 minutes later.

    “We are pleased to announce that the G650 successfully completed its first flight today,” said Pres Henne, senior vice president, Programs, Engineering and Test, Gulfstream. “Systems were fully operational. The aircraft achieved an altitude of 6,600 feet and a speed of 170 knots. Flight controls and characteristics performed as expected. We consider this flight a success and look forward to pursuing our full flight-test plan.”

    Under its own power, the G650 rolled out of the Savannah manufacturing facility on Sept. 29, 2009. It remains on schedule for type certification by 2011, followed by entry-into-service in 2012.

    The G650 offers the longest range at the fastest speed in its class. Powered by best-in-class Rolls-Royce BR725 engines, the business jet is capable of traveling 7,000 nautical miles at 0.85 Mach and has a maximum operating speed of 0.925 Mach. Its 7,000-nautical-mile range means the G650 can fly nonstop from Dubai to Chicago. With an initial cruise altitude of 41,000 feet at 0.85 Mach, the G650 can climb to a maximum altitude of 51,000 feet and avoid traffic and inclement weather.

    With its all-new aerodynamically optimized wing, the G650 can meet the latest takeoff certification requirements. At maximum takeoff weight, the aircraft can depart from a 6,000-foot runway.

    Passenger comfort is one of the G650’s main attributes. The aircraft features the largest purpose-built business-jet cabin, which leaves room for larger galleys and lavatories, and increased storage. The jet, which seats 11-18 passengers, also has 16 Gulfstream-signature oval windows that measure 28 by 20.5 inches, the biggest in the industry.

    The G650 provides the most productive cabin environment. A cabin altitude of 4,850 feet at FL510 and 3,300 feet at FL410 reduces fatigue, increases mental alertness and enhances productivity. A quieter cabin allows for a better environment for conversation or relaxation.

    The aircraft comes with the new Gulfstream Cabin Essential™ package, so a single-point failure will not result in the loss of functionality. That means a toilet always flushes; water is always available; and an entertainment source always works.

    Additionally, the G650 features the PlaneView™ II cockpit, the most advanced flight deck in business aviation, and an Advanced Health and Trend Monitoring System (AHTMS) to support aircraft maintenance planning and enhance availability.

  • Flight School First in US to Cover 100 Percent of Tuition for Veterans

    Upper Limit Aviation partners with Salt Lake Community College to help veterans pay for school in hard economic times

    SALT LAKE CITY, Dec. 7, 2010 — Upper Limit Aviation (ULA), one of four accredited flight schools in the nation, recently announced that it’s able to offer up to 100 percent tuition coverage for eligible vets via the U.S. Veterans’ Benefits Office. This unprecedented move enables military veterans to receive flight training covered under the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill if they qualify for full benefits.

    The special tuition program is a boon to veterans who have wanted to learn to fly, but have been thwarted previously due to financial concerns. ULA is uniquely partnered with the 2nd largest community college in the country, Salt Lake Community College (SLCC), to facilitate a program not only offering flight training but an Associate of Science degree or Commercial Certificate of Completion in the Professional Pilot program upon graduation. The program extends to those who might not be eligible for 100% coverage, or who may need additional assistance via the VA’s Yellow Ribbon Program.

    “We’ve worked hard to bring this program to ULA,” said Lois Reid, school director. “We finally have the chance to offer America’s veterans the chance to train for a career in aviation at virtually no cost to them.”

    As a Part 141 / Part 61 flight school, Upper Limit is one of the only schools in the country operating out of class B airspace, which affords students practical experience with air traffic control in busy, highly regulated airspace. ULA’s flight training program introduces students to flying at high-density altitudes (above 5,000 ft), mountainous terrain, and in associated wind and weather conditions. In addition to training for flight ratings Private – CFII, Veterans are also able to use their benefits to train under Upper Limit Aviation’s special courses such as External Load, Mountain Flying, and Turbine Transition.

    Emergency Landing in Albuquerque


    On Jan 11, 2013, Flight 1868, an American Airlines MD-80 en route from Las Vegas to Dallas was in the air when a problem developed in a plane generator. There were 150 passengers and 5 crew.

    The Captain told passengers that the backup generator failed, so they had to divert to Albuquerque International where they made a safe landing at 8:30 a.m.

    No injuries were reported.

    Passengers were informed the plane was going to maintenance and they were placed on alternative flights to Dallas.

    Delhi International Airport Partners with IBM to Create a Smarter Air Terminal

    NEW DELHI, Dec. 16, 2010 — Delhi International Airport (P) Limited (DIAL) has partnered with IBM (NYSE: IBM) India to establish a common-use infrastructure in New Delhi’s Passenger Terminal Building 3 that will automate its operations and improve customer satisfaction to give the airport a competitive edge through quality service. The unified network solution integrates all of the communications across Terminal 3 and its facilities so that airport operations, airlines and other tenants can better share and exchange key information across their related operations to more efficiently deploy their resources and meet the growing demands of the India aviation market.

    “IBM’s solution reflects the need of Delhi International Airport (P) Limited — a solution providing quality management of our internal systems and delivering greater service to the users of the airport while reducing issues pertaining to interoperability through this infrastructure,” said I.     DIAL chose IBM’s Managed Network Infrastructure (MNI) solution, which forms backbone for all the IT and non-IT systems in Terminal 3. It combines video, voice and data over a single network platform using Intelligent Cable Management System with high levels of redundancy and scalability. IBM designed and implemented this network to meet DIAL’s objective of achieving a world class common use IT infrastructure for its customers, thereby supporting and improving service quality levels due to its high available design. The MNI covers the length and breadth of Terminal 3 with wired and wireless network coverage providing common use but highly virtualized network services to airport core systems, IT and non-IT systems, corporate users, government offices, lounges and public facilities. All this has been done with well defined work methods statements, detailed working plans and test and integration plans.
