    Boeing Statement on IAM 837 Contract Ratification

    Lockheed Martin Receives $360 Million in Contracts to Support U.S. Navy MH-60R Helicopter Fleet

    WASHINGTON, Jan. 12, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — The U.S. Navy demonstrated its continued commitment to keeping its MH-60R Seahawk helicopter fleet at the forefront of anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare, awarding Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT) a variety of production and development contracts totaling $360 million. The end-of-year awards cover a spectrum of systems aboard the MH-60R, built by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation (NYSE: UTX).

    “The Navy’s investment in the MH-60R fleet ensures our pilots and aircrews have the best and most advanced equipment for every mission,” said Capt. Dean Peters, U.S. Navy MH-60 program manager. “We are looking for reliable, modern aircraft upgraded efficiently and affordably, and that’s why we have devoted these resources to the MH-60 fleet.”

    As Lockheed Martin prepares for its 300th cockpit delivery milestone in late February, the Navy exercised a $38 million option under the current multi-year contract to cover production of the next lot of common cockpits for MH-60S and MH-60R helicopters. The bulk of the work will be performed at Lockheed Martin’s facility in Owego, N.Y., and is scheduled for completion by April 2013.

    Additionally, the Navy will provide MH-60R/S crews with improved situational awareness by incorporating Lockheed Martin’s Situational Awareness Technology Insertion (SATI) aboard the aircraft under a $35 million contract. The award covers a pre-development iteration of SATI, an eight-component package of upgrades and improvements to the helicopter’s flight management system. Improvements include a new integrated digital map to give pilots a clear picture of their operating area, and an upgrade to the Identification Friend-or-Foe (IFF) system. The IFF upgrade will prevent interference during transmission and ensure interoperability with the Federal Aviation Administration and other agencies.

    One of the most highly advanced systems aboard the MH-60R – Automatic Radar Periscope Detection and Discrimination (ARPDD) – will transition from system development and demonstration (SDD) to production under a $36 million contract award. The Telephonics radar used in ARPDD is the latest iteration of the radar currently deployed with the MH-60R, but adds a new mode requiring improved radar performance and eight times the processing power of the previous version.

    In October 2010, Lockheed Martin and the Navy successfully completed initial flight tests of the system aboard an MH-60R, marking the first time a helicopter has had the functionality for its on-board radar to automatically discriminate between a periscope and other small surface objects, significantly improving the probability of finding a submarine. This recent contract award covers the infrastructure required to meet full-rate production and the fielding of the ARPDD radar system aboard six MH-60R production aircraft to support Initial Operational Capability in 2013.

    Construction of the next lot of 24 MH-60R mission avionics suites and 18 MH-60S cockpits will begin under a $72 million Multi-Year II advanced acquisition contract award that covers long-lead items for the helicopters and cockpit systems. Lockheed Martin and partner Sikorsky Aircraft have delivered more than 85 MH-60R helicopters to date and are on track to reach the century mark early in 2011.

    NTSB TO MEET ON BUSINESS JET RUNWAY EXCURSION ACCIDENT THAT
    KILLED FOUR AND INJURED TWO IN SOUTH CAROLINA

    The National Transportation Safety Board will hold a public
    Board meeting on its investigation into an accident in which
    a chartered business jet crashed during a rejected takeoff
    in Columbia, South Carolina, 18 months ago.

    The purpose of the meeting will be to determine the probable
    cause of the accident and to consider proposed safety
    recommendations to reduce the likelihood of future such
    mishaps.

    On September 19, 2008, at 11:53 p.m. EDT, a Bombardier
    Learjet Model 60 (N999LJ) operated by Global Exec Aviation
    and destined for Van Nuys, California, overran runway 11
    during a rejected takeoff at Columbia Metropolitan Airport.
    The captain, the first officer, and two passengers were
    killed; two other passengers were seriously injured.

    The meeting will be held in Washington on Tuesday, April 6,
    20010, at 9:30 a.m. ET, in the NTSB Board Room and
    Conference Center at 429 L’Enfant Plaza, S.W.

    Press Release – FAA Proposes $455,175 Civil Penalty Against Corporate Air

    SEATTLE – The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a $455,175 civil penalty against Corporate Air of Billings, Mont., for allegedly operating a Beech 1900C airliner when it was not in compliance with Federal Aviation Regulations.

    “Our aviation safety rules are designed to protect the flying public,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “We expect airlines to comply with these rules and will take enforcement action when they do not.”

    The FAA alleges Corporate Air failed to maintain the aircraft under the company’s general maintenance manual, which includes the Pratt & Whitney Canada maintenance manual for the aircraft’s turboprop engines.

    Specifically, the FAA alleges that Corporate Air operated the aircraft on at least 80 flights in spite of continued evidence of excessive oil consumption by the right engine. The FAA-approved aircraft and engine manuals call for post-flight inspection and repair of an engine experiencing excessive oil consumption. Corporate Air did not correct the oil consumption problem despite repeated inspections in which oil had to be added.

    Corporate Air operates charter and air taxi service under Part 135 of the Federal Aviation Regulations.

    “The safety of the passengers and crew must be the top priority for any operator,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt. “All operators must comply with maintenance requirements.”

    Corporate Air has 30 days from the receipt of the FAA’s enforcement letter to respond to the agency.

    Goodyear Recommends Aviators Know Aircraft Tire Wear Limits

    AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 7, 2010 — Knowing your limits is sage advice that applies to everything in life from financial risk to piloting an airplane or even that return trip to the buffet. But when it comes to aircraft tire wear, it’s all about routine inspection and knowing the facts.

    Aircraft tires experience wear during taxi, takeoff, and landing. Takeoff generates the most tire wear because the airplane has a full fuel load and the tires are pre-heated by taxiing. So with all aircraft, tires should be routinely inspected during preflight to check tire wear.

    When inspecting aircraft tires, the first thing to check (after checking the tire pressure) is the amount of remaining tread to avoid excessive wear and possible unsafe conditions. According to Larry Rapsard, product support manager for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (NYSE: GT), “Aircraft tires should be removed when the tread is worn to the base of any groove at any spot, or to the minimum depth stated by the aircraft manufacturer.”

    Tires should also be examined for uneven wear. In cases where gear camber wears one side faster than the other, tires can be demounted and turned around to extend the tire life. Uneven aircraft tire wear is usually an indication of gear misalignment or tire underinflation.

    Rapsard also lists other aircraft tire wear conditions revealed through inspection that may require tires to be removed from service. “Sidewall damage including some weatherchecking, cracks, or cuts means the tire should be scrapped if the damage extends down to the fabric plies. The same goes for tread cuts and groove cracking,” he said. Damage that doesn’t expose the cords normally does not require the tire to be removed.

    Other excessive operating conditions will cause the tread to wear much faster, such as high energy braking, high speed taxiing and high speed cornering. Be sure to consider these if you see fast tread wear.
    Also, tires that have been run while more than 10% underinflated can be damaged internally and should be removed.

    By taking the time to conduct proper inspections and knowing the limits of acceptable aircraft tire wear, you’ll get the most out of your tires.
