    FAA Will Review Boeing 787 Design and Production


    WASHINGTON – In light of a series of recent events, the FAA will conduct a comprehensive review of the Boeing 787 critical systems, including the design, manufacture and assembly. The purpose of the review is to validate the work conducted during the certification process and further ensure that the aircraft meets the FAA’s high level of safety.

    “The safety of the traveling public is our top priority,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. “This review will help us look at the root causes and do everything we can to safeguard against similar events in the future.”

    A team of FAA and Boeing engineers and inspectors wi
    ll conduct this joint review, with an emphasis on the aircraft’s electrical power and distribution system. The review will also examine how the electrical and mechanical systems interact with each other.

    “We are confident that the aircraft is safe.
    But we need to have a complete understanding of what is happening,” said FAA Administrator Michael P. Huerta. “We are conducting the review to further ensure that the aircraft meets our high safety standards.”

    The review will be structured to provide a broader view of design, manufacturing and assembly and will not focus exclusively on individual events. The review is expected to begin in Seattle, but may expand to other locations over the course of several months.

    FAA technical experts logged 200,000 hours of work during the 787 type certification and flew on numerous test flights. The FAA reviews 787 in-service events as part of our continued operational safety process.

    United Airlines is currently the only U.S. airline operating the 787, with six airplanes delivered. The worldwide in-service fleet includes 50 aircraft.

    Boeing AH-64D Apache Block III Structures Test Aircraft Makes 1st Flight

    MESA, Ariz., Dec. 4, 2009 — The Boeing [NYSE: BA] AH-64D Apache Block III program has completed the first flight of its structures test aircraft. The test, conducted Nov. 23 in Mesa, demonstrated flight characteristics and handling maneuvers. Tests to continue to expand the helicopter’s flight envelope are expected to continue for the next several weeks.

    Block III technologies being tested include the composite main rotor blade, composite horizontal stabilator, and -701D engines, which include an enhanced digital electronic control unit. The aircraft also features a split-torque face gear transmission that increases power throughput by more than 20 percent within the same physical operating space as the legacy transmission.

    “This flight demonstration is another crucial step as the U.S. Army and Boeing work together to meet the objectives of the Apache Block III program,” said Col. Shane Openshaw, Army Apache project manager. “The Apache Block III helicopter meets the Army’s requirement to sustain the aircraft for its life cycle while providing superior capabilities to Army aviators, battlefield commanders and soldiers.”

    The program’s avionics test aircraft, which made its first flight ahead of schedule in June 2008, completed the Army’s Limited User Test according to schedule, in November, at the Yuma (Ariz.) Proving Ground.

    “Meeting calendar objectives while integrating new capabilities confirms the maturity of the multiple technologies conceived, designed and developed by Boeing and our key partners for the Apache Block III helicopter,” said Al Winn, Boeing Apache Programs vice president. “Our success highlights the value of cooperative development.”

    The Army and Boeing continue to work toward an anticipated Department of Defense acquisition process Milestone C decision in April 2010.

    Aviation Industry: Time for a Black Box Upgrade

    Woodland Hills, CA — (ReleaseWire) — 07/07/2016 –No one is saying that aircraft tracking doesn’t need an overhaul. It does. Examination of plane crash events demands it.

    Aviation experts have been asking for pinger battery improvements since a month after the crash of Air France 447 on 1 June 2009, when the pinger battery ran down in July. Air France 447 was not recovered from the ocean floor until May 2011, nearly two years after it was lost. Debris from the accident was recovered in the interim, but if the pinger had been louder, or the battery designed to last longer, then there’s a good chance that the plane would have been discovered sooner. One of the outcomes of this terrible event was a determination to design a pinger system with longer lasting batteries. EASA amended requirements for flight recorders and underwater locating devices in its 2013-26 amendment(RMT.0400 & RMT.0401 (OPS.090(A) & OPS.090(B)) — 20.12.2013) but implementing these requirements takes a prohibitively long time.

    Aviation experts have been asking for better tracking technology since Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 disappeared on 8 March 2014 while flying from Kuala Lumpur International Airport, Malaysia, to Beijing Capital International Airport in China. Because this plane departed from its planned route, finding where it came down has been a unique challenge. Inmarsat’s satellite communications network concluded that the flight continued until at least 08:19 and flew south into the southern Indian Ocean. Triangulation of Inmarsat’s satellite communications has been the only credible source searchers depend on to develop the search area.

    Aviation experts have been suggesting the blackbox be water-activated (or have water-activated duplicates) with flotation of some kind so the blackbox can be found faster. More recently, aviation experts have wondered about EgyptAir Flight 804 which crashed into the Mediterranean Sea on 19 May 2016. It was known fairly precisely where it came down, and yet salvage and rescue units were unable to be on the scene in time to help any survivors—if survivors there had been. We will never know because no one was there. And while tracking the location of the blackbox fell within the thirty day battery limit, if the technology had more power, it could have been located sooner. Finding the wreckage sooner means less money spent on the search, and a shorter time for the families agonizing over their losses.

    So here is what is new: Inmarsat provides SwiftBroadband service for plane’s inflight Wi-Fi on many aircraft. Immarsat is developing a streaming system described as a “blackbox in the cloud.” This streaming system they are working on will allow crucial data to be streamed off a plane on the occasion of specified trigger events like a course deviation or disappearance from radar.

    One only need consider a few factors to realize that a cloud-based system is a crucial development that current technology can easily handle. We need only to look at the cost of the search for a missing plane. According to France and Brazil, those two countries spent more than $40 million over two years to recover the black boxes from Air France Flight 447. Bloomberg reported the recovery cost of Air France 447 was $100 million. According to the South China Post, the cost of the (as yet unfound) MH370 will be as much as ten times more than AF447. Like the expense of MH370’s search, the cost of finding EgyptAir Flight 804 is still ongoing.

    Even when Inmarsat’s streaming system will be available, the aviation industry is going to be resistant, mostly because it is going to be costly. Is this a cost that we must afford? I think it is.

    Boeing Names 3 to Business Development Leadership Positions

    ST. LOUIS, Jan. 24, 2011 — Boeing [NYSE: BA] today announced that it has named three Business Development leaders to new positions within its Boeing Defense, Space & Security (BDS) business unit:

    • Tom Bell, vice president of Strategic Development for BDS
    • Bill Bonadio, vice president of Business Development for Network and Space Systems (N&SS)
    • Jeff Kohler, vice president of Business Development for Boeing Military Aircraft (BMA).

    Previously, Bonadio was vice president of Strategic Development for BDS, Bell served as vice president of Business Development for Boeing Military Aircraft, and Kohler was vice president of BDS International Market Strategy.

    All three remain based in Arlington, Va.

    In his new position, Bell will provide leadership on business strategy and facilitate efforts to grow both core business and adjacent markets.

    “Having considerable international, sales and strategy experience with two of our businesses, Tom is highly qualified to lead Strategic Development for BDS,” said Chris Raymond, vice president of BDS Business Development.

    Bell joined Boeing in 1988. He holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology and business from Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge, and a master’s degree in business administration from the Florida Institute of Technology, with a concentration in international contracts.

    Bonadio is responsible for all aspects of strategy, sales, and customer relations for the N&SS portfolio, its divisions and programs.

    “Bill understands our customers’ perspectives and requirements, and he’ll bring that knowledge to bear within N&SS,” said Roger Krone, president of N&SS.

    Prior to joining Boeing in 2006, Bonadio was a vice president of Business Development at Danaher Corporation, and also worked in management consulting with Bain & Co. A former U.S. Navy submarine officer, Bonadio holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Bucknell University and a master’s in business administration from the J.L. Kellogg Graduate School of Management at Northwestern University.

    Kohler is responsible for all aspects of strategy, sales, and customer relations for the BMA portfolio, its divisions and programs.

    “Jeff brings significant international and customer experience to his new position, which will serve him and our business well as we look to increase market share internationally while continuing to grow our core business domestically,” said Chris Chadwick, president of BMA.

    Kohler joined Boeing in 2007 after a 34-year career with the U.S. Air Force. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the U.S. Air Force Academy and a master’s degree in history from the University of Indiana.

    The National Transportation Safety Board recommends that the
    Federal Aviation Administration:

    Require Honeywell to revise the software logic within the MK
    XXII Enhanced Ground Proximity Warning System so that a
    fault in the radio altimeter system would not prevent the
    look-ahead feature from functioning without notification to
    the pilot. (A-10-60)

    Once Honeywell revises the MK XXII Enhanced Ground Proximity
    Warning System (EGPWS) software logic (as described in
    Safety Recommendation A-10-60), require all operators using
    the Honeywell MK XXII EGPWS to install the revised software.

    Boeing 747-8 Freighter Successfully Completes First Flight

    Newest Boeing Freighter Touches Down Safely After 3-Hour, 39-Minute Mission

    EVERETT, Wash., Feb. 8 /– The Boeing (NYSE: BA) 747-8 Freighter successfully took to the sky for the first time today before more than 5,000 employees, customers, suppliers and community leaders. The flight begins a test program for the world’s most efficient freighter.
    With 747 Chief Pilot Mark Feuerstein and Capt. Tom Imrich in the flight deck, the newest member of the 747 family took off at 12:39 p.m. local time from Paine Field in Everett and landed at Paine Field at 4:18 p.m.
    “It was a real privilege to be at the controls of this great airplane on its first flight, representing the thousands of folks who made today possible,” said Feuerstein. “The airplane performed as expected and handled just like a 747-400.”

    Today’s flight was the first of more than 1,600 flight hours in the test program for the newest member of the Boeing freighter family. The airplane followed a route over Western Washington, where it underwent tests for basic handling qualities and engine performance. The airplane reached a cruising altitude of 17,000 feet (5,181 m) and a speed of up to 230 knots, or about 264 miles (426 km) per hour.

    Powered by four General Electric GEnx-2B engines, the 747-8 Freighter will transition its testing program to Moses Lake, Wash., and Palmdale, Calif., where the other two test airplanes will join it in the coming month.
    “This truly is a great day for The Boeing Company and the 747 program,” said Mo Yahyavi, 747 program general manager and vice president, Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “It’s the culmination of the hard work and dedication of our employees, suppliers and customers. While there is still much to do, I am excited to begin the flight-test program, which will demonstrate the capabilities of this airplane.”

    The 747-8 Freighter is the new, high-capacity 747 that will give cargo operators the lowest operating costs and best economics of any freighter. The airplane is 250 feet, 2 inches (76.3 m) long, which is 18 feet, 4 inches (5.6 m) longer than the 747-400 Freighter. The stretch provides customers with 16 percent more revenue cargo volume compared with its predecessor. That translates to an additional four main-deck pallets and three lower-hold pallets.

    “The 747-8 Freighter continues the leadership of the 747 Freighter families, which carries more than half of the world’s air freight, making it the standard of the air cargo industry,” Yahyavi said.

    Boeing launched the airplane on Nov. 14, 2005, with firm orders for 18 747-8 Freighters: 10 from Cargolux of Luxembourg and eight from Nippon Cargo Airlines of Japan. All told, Boeing has secured 108 orders for the 747-8, of which 76 are orders for the new freighter. Cargolux, Nippon Cargo Airlines, AirBridgeCargo Airlines, Atlas Air, Cathay Pacific, Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, Emirates SkyCargo, Guggenheim and Korean Air all have ordered the 747-8 Freighter.
