NTSB SENDING TEAM TO ASSIST GOVERNMENT OF SAUDI ARABIA WITH MD-11 FREIGHTER ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION

The National Transportation Safety Board is dispatching a team of investigators to assist the government of Saudi Arabia with its investigation of today’s cargo airplane accident in Riyadh.
At about 11:38 a.m. local time today, a Lufthansa MD-11(D-ALCQ) freighter crashed while landing at the King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. The two crewmembers on
board survived the accident. Flight 8460 originated in Frankfurt.
NTSB Chairman Deborah A.P. Hersman has designated Senior Air Safety Investigator Bill English as the U.S. Accredited Representative. The U.S. team will also include NTSB flight operations specialists, an NTSB aircraft systems specialist, and technical advisors from the Federal Aviation Administration and Boeing.
The investigation is being conducted by Saudi Arabia’s General Authority of Civil Aviation

Drunken United Airlines Pilot Charged
LONDON–51-year-old pilot Erwin Vermont Washington pleaded guilty today for being above the alcohol limit for flying a plane. United has removed him from duty. He was pulled from London-Chicago Flight 949 (Boeing 767) in November. He scored a 31 micrograms of alcohol per 100 milliliters of breath. The blood test indicated 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood. The limit for pilots is 20 milligrams.(for a car it is 80 milligrams.)
Washington was tried in Uxbridge Magistrates Court near London and has been released on bail. For pilots being over the legal limit for flying, the maximum sentence is two years in jail and a fine.
Sentencing will be Feb. 5.
FAA Publishes Next Gen Plans for Implementation
February 2009Over 300 members of the RTCA NextGen Mid-Term Implementation Task Force beganplanning NextGen on an aggressive timetable. The report provides responses and an action plan and are being incorporated in order to to achieve the 2018 operational
capabilities. The plan will be released in early March 2010.

Bombardier’s latest CSeries due in 2013
AVIC, China’s aviation manufacturing conglomerate, is a risk-sharing partner for Bombardier’s latest CSeries aircraft due to enter service in 2013.
Shenyang Aircraft Corp, the subsidiary of AVIC, designs and produces the center fuselage for the new CSeries. Bombardier will develop China’s ARJ21-900 regional jet, help to enhance the competitiveness of the ARJ21-900 and explore commonalities between the ARJ21-900 and Bombardier CSeries.
So far, Bombardier has 25 CSeries aircraft.orders from Lufthansa and 25 from Lease Corporation International. Shenyang Aircraft Corp builds the fuselage for Bombardier’s 70-seat Q400 turboprop regional airliner.
