    Where: Simferopol Ukraine
    When: Dec 29 2010
Who: 66 passengers including one infant, and 12 crew
Why: While en route, oxygen masks were deployed when the flight developed low cabin pressure issues. The crew descended from 40,000 to 11,000 feet, and diverted to Simferopol Ukraine where they made a safe landing two hours before their anticipated arrival time in Vienna. Although Eva Air sent a technical crew to examine the plane to determine if the problem existed or was an alert malfunction, Taiwan defined the problem as due to an engine bleed air problem.

Passengers (including 21 Austrians, 19 Sweden, a New Zealander, two Americans, twelve Czechs, three Spaniards, a Hungarian, six Thais and Taiwanese) were marooned at the Simferopol airport for nearly 24 hours, then moved to a city hotel, and offered buses to Odessa where they might be able to catch another airline’s flight to Vienna. An Austrian publication published that two employees of Eva Air were due at 4:00 pm in Simferopol to organize a flight on an alternative airline. The return flight is listed as cancelled.

What: Jet4You Boeing 737-400 en route from Casablanca Morocco to Bordeaux
    Where: Bordeaux
    When: Dec 4 2010
    Who: 121 passengers
Why: While en route, the plane suffered a bird strike and made a safe landing. Another flight was diverted to pick up the passengers stranded in Bordeaux.

However…the flight that was to be diverted to pick them up was flying from Toulouse to Casablanca…didn’t. We do not know how they got home from Bordeaux.

When the 137 passengers aboard the replacement flight landed in Liege, they refused. (Refused to go to Bordeax, to get off the plane. Basically they rebelled. They did not want to go to Bordeaux and pick up the stranded passengers.) Apparently the pilot then left the plane, and the passengers (except for 52 of them who asked to get off the plane) stayed on the plane all night, outraged that their 90 minute direct trip had turned into 6 hours with 2 unscheduled stop. Their refusal ended up making them stranded even longer.

They were promised a direct flight to Casablanca on Sunday.

What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from San Francisco,CA to Honolulu,HI
    Where: San Francisco
    When: Dec 6th 2010
    Who: 98 passengers
Why: The plane took off successfully but developed a bleed air problem in the left engine. The bleed air issue is more routine than problematic but dealing with it is certainly a best practice; the crew had to burn off fuel to land, and circled; but then diverted to LAX for the maintenance facilities. On arrival to LAX, passengers were booked onto alternative flights.

Engine Failure; Delta Boeing Diverts to Ireland

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200 Philadelphia to Paris
    Where: Shannon Ireland
    When: November 20, 2010, 6:30 am
    Who: 152 passengers 7 crew
Why: While over the Atlantic, the right engine developed problems. Pilots shut it down, and diverted to Shannon where they made a safe landing. Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

    George’s Point of View

I usually try just to get the facts. But when people read these alerts, it is not just the plane. Like on this flight. Can you imagine being aboard this flight, over the Atlantic—as on the infamous Air France Flight 447—and losing an engine? Can you picture your feelings at the moment you realize the failure, and every moment thereafter, until you were safely on the ground? Even with a capable functioning plane, and competent crew. Even with the knowledge that the plane could afford to shut down an engine. Having to sit politely in your row, and believing on some level, that you were placidly waiting to die while strapped in like a trapped like a Chilean Miner in a snow globe hurtling through space toward who knows what fate? Even if I do not write it, behind these lines, there is always a human element.

French Passengers Refuse to Submit to Diversion

What: Ryanair en route from Fes, Morocco to Beauvais, France
    Where: Liege, Belgium
    When: Wed Nov 17, 2010
    Who: 100+ passengers
Why: After leaving Morocco three hours late, the plane was unable to land in Beauvais because the airport had closed due to foggy weather conditions. After they diverted to Liege, some passengers became disruptive and refused to leave the plane. After an hour trying to get the passengers out, the crew only left when the passengers became abusive.

The exit doors were open, the toilets were locked and the lights were out. Passengers (mostly French) would not leave the plane until 3:30am when police became involved. (Reports are that 100 passengers staged a sit-in lasting from five to eight hours and refused to leave.) Passengers were upset at landing in Liege without warning.

Three other flights to Beauvais were also diverted to Liege without incident.

Buses were provided to take them to their destination.

    George’s Point of View

A plane, completely abandoned by pilots and crew fearing for their safety, professional negotiators called in to coax rude and abusive passengers out of a dark plane with locked bathrooms…

Sure, no passenger would be tickled pink over a plane ride that takes them so far out of the way that they have to take a 350 mile bus ride back, but would the passengers have preferred crashing on the foggy Beauvais runway? What is missing here? We need Paul Harvey to tell us ….the rest of the story.
