Pilots returned to Karachi and made a safe landing.
What: United Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Chicago to Boston Where: Logan International When: Oct 23, 2012 Who: 144 passengers, 5 crew Why: The pilot was on approach to Logan when he noticed a problem with his instruments.
The pilot informed ATC of instrument failures and pressurization issues. ATC cleared a holding pattern, until the pilot performed a visual landing.
The pilot taxied to the Terminal C gate at 12:42 pm. Below is the pilot’s audio.
What: Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Seattle to Saint Louis Where: Omaha When: Apr 14th 2012 Who: 11 injured Why: While en route, the plane lost cabin pressure, oxygen masks deployed, and pilots decided to divert to Omaha where they made a safe landing. However on arrival, eleven passengers needed medical attention. Nine of them were treated at the airport with minor injuries, but continued the flight.
A replacement Southwest jet completed the last leg on Saturday.
What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Milan, Italy to East Midlands Where: Frankfurt When: Apr 4th 2012 Who: 134 passengers Why: Fifteen minutes after takeoff, while over Lugano Switzerland, the cabin lost pressure, deploying oxygen masks. Pilots made a Mayday announcement heard by passengers on the public address system, and descended to 9000 feet. Passengers were alarmed as they watched the alps approach at a rapid rate. In five minutes, they descended four miles. They diverted to Frankfurt Germany where they made a safe landing at at 12:00 local time.
A replacement jet was provided.
Three passengers were injured and hospitalized with ear problems. A news report said there were ten passengers with minor injuries. Some passengers told reporters they were panicking, but no one was screaming.
What: Eva Air Boeing 747-400 en route from Taipei to Shanghai Where: Taipei When: Mar 25th 2012 Who: 357 passengers Why: After takeoff from Taipai, the flight developed cabin pressure issues.
Pilots returned to Taipai where they made a safe landing.
What: American Airlines Boeing 767-200 en route from Los Angeles to New York Where: Los Angeles When: Mar 25th 2012 Why: After takeoff from LA, the plane developed pressurization problems.
Pilots returned to LA and made a safe landing on hot brakes with emergency services on standby.
What: Aeromexico Connect Embraer ERJ-145 en route from Veracruz to Monterrey Where: Tampico When: Mar 17th 2012 Who: 48 passengers and 3 crew Why: The flight developed a cabin pressure problem. As the aircraft (and oxygen masks) descended and temps in the plane ascended, pilots diverted to Tampico. Passengers responded with alarm but were reassured by the flight crew.
The pilots made a safe landing in Tampico.
Passengers disembarked, and were provided an alternative flight.
What: Hong Kong Airlines Airbus A330-200 en route from Hong Kong to Beijing Where: Changsa When: Mar 9th 2012 Why: While en route, the flight developed a loss of cabin pressure.
Oxygen masks were deployed.
Pilots diverted to Changsa where they made a safe landing.
What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Detroit to Dallas Ft. Worth Where: Chicago When: Feb 13th 2012 Why: While en route, the plane developed a problem with cabin pressure.
When the pressure could not be controlled, the pilots descended until pressure adjusted, then diverted to Chicago where they made a safe landing.
The passengers were booked on to alternative flights. The plane is being examined.
What: Donavia Boeing 737-400 en route from Rostov to Moscow Vnukovo Where: Rostov When: Jan 23rd 2012 2:00 pm Who: 70 passengers, 8 crew Why: After takeoff, the flight developed pressure problems. An alarm went off on board; the crew had to return to Rostov where they made a safe landing.
Some passengers passed out and others experienced bloody noses and ears from the pressure.
The oxygen masks were not working, although they were released.
The cause of the pressure issues has not been determined and the details have not been made public.
The flight made a safe landing at Rostov on Don at 3:15 p.m. A replacement jet was provided for the passengers.
What: Sky Express Boeing 737-500 en route from Moscow to Chelyabinsk Where: Moscow When: Jan 5th 2012 Who: n/a Why: After takeoff, the flight developed cabin pressurization issues.
A half hour after takeoff, the flight returned to Vnukovo Airport in Moscow, and made a safe landing.
What: Helios Airways Boeing 737-300 en route from Cyprus to Athens to Prague, Czech Republic Where: Athens When: Aug. 14, 2005 Who: 121 passengers Why: Before losing radio contract, pilots reported trouble with the air conditioning system. In the flight, cabin pressure failure knocked out the pilots. They made it to Athens, but the plane ran out of fuel and crashed. Crash video shows fire fighting planes controlling fires, bodies, baggage, airplane spread over a large debris field, the tail and engines relatively intact. At the time of the crash, except for one pilot (who was observed trying to land the plane), everyone aboard was comatose due to lack of oxygen.
In the case, prosecution failed to prove that German pilot Hans-Juergen Merten and his Cypriot co-pilot Charalambos Charalambous didn’t meet the minimum standards

This court case is just another example of how long aviation cases, including the criminal cases of potentially/allegedly responsible parties, can drag on in court.
What: ANA All Nippon Airways Airbus A320-200 en route from Nagoya to Sapporo Where: Nagoya When: Oct 20th 201 Who: 169 aboard Why: On taking off from Nagoya, the pilots found a cabin pressure problem. They returned to Nagoya to make a safe landing. The plane was in the air less than half an hour.
The error appears to have been the indicator. An investigation is underway.
What: Sky King/Direct Air Boeing 737-200 en route from Lakeland,FL to Niagara Falls,NY Where: Lakeland When: Oct 15th 2011 Why: The charter flight took off once and returned to the Lakeland with cabin pressure problems, then took off again, again with cabin pressure problems.
The passengers were booked on alternative flights.
What: Spanair McDonnell Douglas MD-83 from Ovideo to Barcelona Where: Bilbao When: Oct 13th 2011 Who: 96 passengers Why: While en route, the plane developed problems with cabin pressure. The pilots diverted to Bilbao, where they made a safe landing.
What: BMI Airbus A319-100 en route from London Heathrow,EN (UK) to Berlin Where: Amsterdam When: Sep 29th 2011 Why: The flight was over Amsterdam when the air conditioning system began to lose cabin pressure.
The flight descended to a safe level and continued on to Berlin. A replacement jet was procured to complete the next leg of the journey.
What: Nordavia Boeing 737 en route from Arkhangelsk to Antaliya Where: Arkhangelsk When: Sept 9 2011 Who: n/available Why: After takeoff, the plane lost pressurization.
As the plane lost cabin pressure, the pilot turned back to Arkhangelsk and made a safe landing. No injuries were reported.
What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Poznan (Poland) to Madrid,SP (Spain) Where: Frankfurt When: Aug 30th 201 Why: While en route, the flight developed cabin pressure problems. The crew diverted to Frankfurt Germany where they made a safe landing.
What: Jetblue Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Fort Lauderdale to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic Where: Fort Lauderdale When: Aug 29th 2011 Why: After takeoff, the plane lost cabin pressure.
Although they did not declare emergency, the crew did alert ATC, and descended to a safe altitude before returning to the Fort Lauderdale airport.
Passengers were provided an alternative flight with an alternative jet flown in.
What: Belavia Boeing 737-500 en route from Batumi Georgia to Minsk Belarus Where: Sochi When: Aug 12th 2011 Why: While en route to Belarus, the plane lost cabin pressure. The cabin was not sealed.
THe pilots descended to a safe level, and then obtained permission to divert to Sochi. The pilots made a safe landing in Sochi with emergency services on standby. No injuries were reported.
What: Carpatair Fokker 70 en route from Timisoara to Iasi Romania Where: Timisoara When: Jun 13th 2011 Who: 72 passengers, 4 crew Why: After pressure problems were detected on board, the flight returned to Timisoara where it made a safe landing.
A replacement Fokker was provided, although passengers experienced a delay.
What: Donavia Boeing-737-500 passenger airliner flying from Rostov to Tel Aviv Where: Sochi, Russia Who: 99 passengers * also reported as 103 Why: The flight made a scheduled stop at Sochi, but after takeoff had undesignated problems in the air, and had to return to make an emergency landing. A replacement plane arrived to perform the remainder of the flight about six hours later.
The problem was due to cabin pressure from a leaking door seal.
What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Boston,MA to Saint Thomas US Virgin Islands Where: Atlantic When: Apr 3rd 2011 Who: 157 aboard Why: While en route, the flight developed a problem with cabin pressure. The flight was 150nm southeast of New York City at the time. They descended to 10,000 feet for the sake of the pressure.
Then the pilots diverted to jfk to make a safe landing.
What: Skywest Embraer EMB-120 Brasilia turbo-prop en route from Santa Barbara to San Francisco Where: Big Sur When: Feb 11, 2011 Who: 29 passengers Why: After losing pressure over Big Sur at around 1 pm, the Skywest flight diverted to Monterey Peninsula Airport and made an emergency landing at 1:09 pm. The landing was made under emergency conditions with crews on standby, but there were no injuries. Some passengers complained to paramedics of ear problems and were examined. After passengers disembarked and were transported to their destinations, the flight crew flew on to San Francisco alone.
What: Qantas B737-400 en route from Adelaide to Melbourne Where: Melbourne When: Jan 24, 2011 Who: 99 passengers and six crew Why: On experiencing an air conditioning problem, (turning off an overheated air conditioning system and the second system shut down), the plane lost cabin pressure. Thirty minutes out of Melbourne, the pilot descended to 10,000 feet, and continued to make a safe landing at Melbourne.
