Fokker Crash in Ecuador

What: ICARO Fokker F28 Fellowship 4000 Registration HC-CDT flight 504 with 2 Rolls Royce 555-15P Spey engines
Where: Quito-Mariscal Sucre Airport (UIO) (Ecuador) en route to Coca Airport (OCC/SECO),
When: 22 SEP 2008 ca 11:15
Who: 4 crew 62 passengers
Why: The crash occurred during takeoff.

After flight 504 was cleared for takeoff from runway 35, en route to El Coca, it hit a metal antenna at the end of the runway. The captain decided to abort. The airplane overran the 10240 foot runway, and the plane continued down a slope and plowed through a brick wall. There were no injuries. The yellow jet involved is painted with the logo of the Guayaquil-based Barcelona soccer team (obviously not the generic Fokker in our photo) and is normally used to ferry the soccer team around. No team members were on board.

    What: Miniliner Fokker 27-500 (Dutch Air Cargo) en route from Madrid to Liege
    Where: near Troyes France
    When: Aug 13th 2009

    Why: While en route, the flight lost radio and transponder. The French Air Force provided two two Mirage F1 jets and a patrol reconnaissance to escort the plane to land safely in Chalons France.

    Spirit Airlines Flight Returns to Ecuador due to Engine Issue

    Spirit Airlines flight NK-1140 had to return and make an emergency landing in Guayaquil, Ecuador, on February 16th.

    The plane took off for Fort Lauderdale, Florida, but had to turn back due to an engine problem.

    The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

    Merpati Lands Sans 1 Engine


    What: Merpati Nusantara Fokker 100 en route from from Sampit to Surabaya
    Where: Sampit
    When: Feb 12th 2011
    Why: Not long after takeoff from Sampit, an engine developed problems and had to be shut down.

    The flight landed safely at Sampit. No injuries reported.

    Emergency Landing in Monterrey

    What: Mexicana Click Fokker 100 en route from Mexico City to NEW LAREDO
    Where: Monterrey
    When: Feb 11 2010
    Who: 96 passengers (one site reports 29 passengers and 4 crew)
    Why: The Mexicana Click made an emergency landing in Monterrey when it developed a fault in the undercarriage. It apparently made a safe landing, with no emergencies although it appear one individual may have been suffering from hysteria. Rescue crews were on hand. Other flights were cancelled.

    Biman Bangladesh Airlines= Running Late Airways

    What: Biman Bangladesh Airlines en route from Dubai to London
    Where: Amman Jordan
    When: Sep 18th 2011
    Who: 193 passengers
    Why: Before this flight, the plane had been delayed in Dhaka Bangladesh with an undesignated problem with an engine that delayed the prior flight for three hours.

    Then, after taking off from Dubai, the plane developed engine problems.

    The pilot diverted the flight to Amman Jordan, where there was a layover as the problem was handled.

    What: Biman Bangladesh Airlines DC10 en route to Jeddha and Riyadh
    Where: Amman Jordan
    When: Sep 18th 2011
    What: Since Thursday, 314 passengers on two DC10 had to wait 40 hours after the (two) Biman Bangladesh Airlines DC10s developed undisclosed problems. After being cleared by immigration,they were held in the airport without food since Saturday. The airlines has been plagued with scheduling issues snowballing after one flight was grounded for hydraulic leaks and another for engine problems. Currently three Biman Bangladesh Airlines are grounded, including a DC-10, a Fokker, and a Boeing 737.

    An unsubstantiated rumor is being circulated that within the airlines “a vested group…may have a hand behind [the flight delays] to realize some personal gains.”
