Delta Airlines is going to lease 88 former AirTran Airways Boeing 717 jets from Southwest Airlines. SW took over AirTran Airways in 2011.
These planes are about to undergo a $100 million face lift. Southwest plans to replace the jets with bigger ones. The changes include the outdoor livery, and revamping the interiors.
The jets will allow Delta to retire 50-seat regional jets which are unprofitable due to fuel costs.

Pilots circled, performed a flyby and dumped fuel before they made a safe landing.
The plane was examined in the hanger, and passengers returned home when the flight was cancelled.
Pilots shut down the affected engine due to “mechanical problems” and diverted to Sky Harbor Airport where they made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.
The flight landed 45 minutes after American Airlines Flight 510 (at 2:30) returned to Phoenix for a warning indication.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from New York to Los Angeles,CA Where: New York When: Apr 19th 2012 Who: 172 passengers and 7 crew Why: After taking off from JFK, the plane had a bird strike. A bird was ingested by a right engine, which caused an engine failure. Pilots informed ATC.
Passengers feared the worst as they saw the birds, heard the impact and smelled the smoke, but the cool headed pilot was able to make a visual landing while flying on one engine.
Matthew Kroll, told reporters”We were taking off and two seconds off the ground, the whole plane shutters and you hear this low growl. Then you smell the smoke in the cabin. People were relatively calm because it happened about three second after take-off. Everyone saw what happened and you could smell it. It was more dead bird than smoke. The pilot came out and said we have to circle back. It took about four minutes and we were back on the runway.”
The bird strike was taped by a passenger and has been incorporated into the reports below:
I doubt that April is any worse a month for medical emergencies, but just to give you a snapshot at how common it is—at least this past week—
April 5 American Airlines New York to Buenos Aires Diverted to Caracas Venezuela with a sick man-
April 6 (April 5-6) Cathay Pacific Chicago-Hong Kong An undisclosed medical emergency occurred; flight diverted to Anchorage for the medical emergency. (The flight had a second diversion, probably for a crew change before arriving at their destination.)
April 7 Air New Zealand London to LAX A diabetic ten year old boy received assistance from crew as pilots diverted to Minneapolis. The boy was hospitalized in Minneapolis.
April 8 Egyptair Cairo to Nigeria Infant became ill; crew returned to Cairo and made a safe landing. The infant was hospitalized.
April 9 Delta Japan- Honolulu passenger suffered an attack 2 hours outside of Honolulu; cabin crew and nurse/passenger attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but pronounced DOA.
April 10 LAN Airlines Santiago to Arica male passenger suffered a stroke. A doctor provided first aid; Flight diverted to Copiapo where the passenger was hospitalized.

These medical incidents really don’t differ from how many we usually see–maybe its just spring fever, but I’m just sayin’…make sure you’re a-ok before you set foot on board!
What: Delta Boeing 737 Where: Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport When: Mar 13, 2013 Who: Crew Why: As mechanics were testing the engine of a Delta Boeing 737 at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, the plane developed braking problems. Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from Dublin to New York (ferry flight) Where: Atlantic When: Feb 17th, 18th and 19, 2012 Who: Why: While en route between Chicago and Paris, the plane’s transponder failed.
The same thing occurred on the Paris-New York flight on Feb 18;
and on the New York to Frankfurt flight on Feb 18 over Canada;
and on the Dublin to New York flight on Feb 19.
There has obviously been a problem here.
The transponder code (or “squawk code”) or altitude information is designed to help air traffic controllers to identify the aircraft and to maintain separation. The plane can fly without it, but what if the safety space is breached and there is an incident?
At least the last flight was a ferry flight, and on landing, the transponder is replaced, or whatever underlying factor that is causing this is corrected! The MEL (Minimum Equipment List) does have parameters for this.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Los Angeles to Detroit Where: Detroit When: Feb 18th 2012 Who: 2 injured Why: The flight was on approach to Detroit and flew into turbulence.

Pilots put on their oxygen masks and reported smoke in the cockpit. ATC had to negotiate the flight’s return with other flights coming and going, but managed to get them back on the ground about twelve minutes after takeoff.
By the time maintenance examined the plane, smoke had dispersed. The smoke is being attributed to fluid burn-off.
Passengers were provided alternative transportation.
This week an article in Business Week discussed cost-cutting measures that might be taken by Pinnacle after a 12% decline following the 2009 Colgan Air crash and a $1.89 million fine from the FAA over unfinished flight attendant training.

What: Chautauqua Embraer ERJ-145/Delta Airlines en route from Asheville,NC to New York Where: La Guardia airport, New York When: Nov 16th 2011 Why: By now, everyone has probably heard about this:
A captain who was locked in the airplane’s bathroom gave a passenger a security code to inform the co-pilot.
But when the co-pilot heard the passenger’s heavy accent, he told ATC “the captain has disappeared in the back and I have someone with a big foreign accent trying to access the cockpit.” ATC urged him to land ASAP.
The situation was resolved before the plane landed, and fortunately before the fighter jets were deployed.
What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from San Francisco to Atlanta Where: Atlanta When: Nov 13th 2011 Who: 1 injury Why: While on approach to Atlanta, the flight encountered turbulence.
One person was injured.
