Jetairfly Receives Next-Generation 737 With New Boeing Sky Interior

SEATTLE, Nov. 24, 2010 / — Boeing and Brussels-based Jetairfly today celebrated the delivery of the airline’s first Next-Generation 737-800 with the new Boeing Sky Interior. Jetairfly, part of TUI Travel PLC, the largest tourism group in London, is the first European-based airline to operate a 737 with the new passenger-inspired interior.

“The 737’s operating and environmental performance continues to make this airplane a valuable asset to our fleet,” said Elie Bruyninckx, chairman of Jetairfly. “We continue in our efforts to reduce our carbon output and improve the flying experience for our passengers, and we are proud to be the first airline based in Europe to operate with the new Boeing Sky Interior.”

The 737 Boeing Sky Interior features new, modern-sculpted sidewalls and window reveals, larger stow bins and more headroom around the aisle seats. Other features include a quieter cabin, intuitive placement of switches and call buttons, improved sound quality and different interior lighting schemes.

The Boeing Sky Interior is the latest in a series of improvements to the airplane. Since the Next-Generation 737 was introduced in 1997, customers have taken advantage of continuous improvements to this best-selling airplane that have made it even more efficient, reliable and passenger-friendly. Next to come will be a package of performance improvements that will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions by 2 percent – making the airplane a full 7 percent more efficient than the first Next-Generation 737 delivered. The performance improvements to the airframe and engine will be in service by early 2012.

To date, 50 customers have ordered the new interior for 1,386 airplanes.

I know these words are less consolation than a kind touch, less than someone sitting beside you, holding your hand, providing a shoulder, an ear, a heart. You need not be desolate, alone, circling in on yourself. Mend what can be mended. When you need to speak, offer an ear. When you need help, offer a hand. Remember, this too shall pass. Remember what was good and celebrate it. Remember what was real, and let all else fall away. Let your heart be lifted. Let it be lighter from this moment on.

    15 injured by turbulence

    What: Air Canada Boeing 767-300, registration C-GHLQ performing flight AC-878 from Toronto,ON to Zurich
    Where: Atlantic
    When: Jan 14th 201
    Who: 103 aboard
    Why: While en route, 40 minutes after the seat belt light was turned on, the flight encountered clear severe air turbulence. Two crew members were injured, and 13 passengers. 7 individuals were injured enough to be admitted to the hospital on arrival in Zurich.

    Volotea Flight Rejects Takeoff After Bird Strike

    Volotea flight V7-1733 had to reject takeoff from Genoa, Italy, on November 5th.

    The Boeing 717-200 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Naples, Italy, when the crew rejected takeoff due to a bird strike.

    The plane safely returned to the apron. All passengers and crew members remained safe.

    FAA Proposes Major Changes to Icing Certification Rules

    The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is proposing a significant expansion of its icing certification standards, including a new requirement that manufacturers show airplanes can operate safely in freezing drizzle or freezing rain, conditions that constitute an icing environment known as “supercooled large drops” (SLDs).

    The proposed regulations would improve safety by mandating that new transport category aircraft most affected by SLD icing conditions meet expanded safety standards, including additional airplane performance and handling qualities. The rule also would require all new transport category designs be able to fly in conditions where supercooled liquid and ice crystals exist.

    The FAA is also proposing changes that would expand the icing certification requirements for engines, engine installations and some airplane components (for example, angle of attack and airspeed indicating systems). These systems would need to be able to perform in freezing rain, freezing drizzle, ice crystals and combinations of these icing phenomena.

    “These new icing standards are part of our continuing effort to make the world’s safest aviation system even safer,” said U.S. Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood.

    “These regulations will help ensure future aircraft can operate safely in some of the toughest icing conditions,” said FAA Administrator Randy Babbitt.

    The proposed rule is based largely on recommendations from the FAA’s Aviation Rulemaking Advisory Committee (ARAC) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). The FAA tasked the ARAC to study how icing certification regulations should be expanded after the tragic 1994 icing-related accident in Roselawn, IL. The NTSB recommendations stemmed from the same accident.

    Previously, the FAA issued 112 airworthiness directives for transport category aircraft related to icing. Of the 112 ADs, 21 were specifically related to SLD. The ADs require flight crews to exit icing conditions when they see visual cues indicating the conditions exceed the capabilities of the aircraft’s ice protection equipment.

    Korean Air Plane’s Tyres Deflate during Roll out in South Korea

    korean airKorean Air flight KE-718’s both nose tyres deflated after landing at Jeju International Airport, Jeju City, South Korea, on July 29th.

    The Boeing 737-900 flying from Tokyo, Japan, had landed on Jeju’s runway when the incident occurred.

    All 148 passengers onboard disembarked safely.

    The aircraft is still on the ground since the occurrence.

    No Injuries. Jamaican Hostage Situation Resolved

    What: Canadian CanJet Airlines Flight 918 Boeing 737
    Where: Montego Bay’s Sangster International Airport.
    When: Hostage crisis began at about 10:20 p.m. local time Sunday and ended near 6:40 a.m
    Who: Initially 159 (out of 174 expected) passengers and eight crew ; six crew members hostage for eight hours by gunman Stephen Fray
    Why: A “mentallly challenged” 20-year-old Jamaican gunman having relationship problems boarded the plane during a layover and demanded to be flown to Cuba. A passenger said “… took our money and we just, like, left our purses and our passports and everything just in the plane because we didn’t want to take any chances. We just put the money in a bag and we ran out of the plane.”. The flight was stormed by the Jamaica Defence Force Counter Terrorism Operations Group

    Fortunately the situation was resolved with no injuries, but it is obvious the poor kid had issues. Who in their right mind would leave Jamaica for Cuba?
