Why: The Piper landed in a field . 48 feet of touching down, deep snows flipped the aircraft. Minor damage made it necessary for the plane to be trailered out. -

Why: The pilot noticed they were running low on fuel. After a Forced landing in a field outside of PESCADERO, CA, about 200 yards into the field, the plane’s front nose wheel dug into the soil and collapsed, causing the plan to flip. The pilot buzz is that the renter of the plane should have refueled, and that the forced landing and resultant plane damage was entirely unnecessary. -

Safe But Not Safe Enough: Helicopter Crash Reduction
International Helicopter Safety Team is a task force composed of American and European government agencies–an international safety team–forecasts to reduce the rate of helicopter crashes 80 percent within eight years, no doubt a good idea as helicopters crash three times more frequently than commercial airliners
Seventy percent of helicopter crashes are determined to be the result of human error (training, overwork or poor design)

What: Mi-171 helicopter owned by the Russian state gas giant Gazprom
Where: snow-covered mountain region of Siberia near Chornaya Mountain in the rugged Altai region.
When: Friday Jan 9 2009
Who: eleven passengers: Seven people were killed including Russia’s lower house of parliament rep Alexander Kosopkin; Four survivors were being treated in the city of Barnaul
Why: The passengers had been on a hunting expedition. Under investigation is the possibility that poor quality fuel caused the helicopter’s engines to break down. Initial reports of eight dead were corrected to seven. No indication is made if crew is included in the passenger count. -
Zest Crashes Barriers in Caticlan

What: ZEST Xian MA60 Aircraft Flight 865 en route from Manila to Caticlan
Where: undershot the Caticlan airport runway, Phillipines
When: Sunday Morning 11 JAN 2009
Who: 22 adults, 2 children, 1 crew aboard.
Injured: Though initial reports indicated two children and one crew member were injured, fifteen were taken to the Baptist hospital in Caticlan.
Why: According to reportage (which may be obscured due to mistranslation) strong winds caused the aircraft’s landing gear to “explode.” (explode?) The plane undershot landing on runway 06, hit an airport barrier. The plane’s nose, landing gears and propellers were damaged. The runway was then closed.The plane reportedly “veered to crash into the airport’s passenger lounge” but that has not been confirmed. The injured included at least one ground crew member.

Why: The pilot reported that the plain was losing oil pressure. On landing, the plane flipped in a marshy area. The Coast Guard responded to the emergency call. The (approx) 25 gallons of fuel aboard neither caused a fire nor contaminated the area. The pilot was uninjured -

Why: The helicopter departed from Provo on an IFR training flight to Windover.
The pilot attempted to fly around the northern end of the Oquirrh mountains and flew into bad weather. -

Who: Passengers included Louisville’s basketball team
Why: The flight had the equivalent of a “check engine” light go off in the instrument panel. The Louisville’s basketball team which was on board deplaned safely after an emergency landing. The passengers were rescheduled for transportation later Tuesday for its Wednesday game; the rescheduled flight took off from Standiford Field at about 9:05 p.m. scheduled to arrive in Tampa after 11 p.m. -

Why: Flight reported that a warning light predicted the landing gear might fail on landing. The emergency landing occurred when landing gear became stuck and its wheels failed to come down. The pilot used up excess fuel before landing without incident. -

Why: the pilot reported a problem in the right engine. Alarm lights in the instrument panel were blinking. The carrier provided flight vouchers for Caticlan via Kalibo. The passengers were bound for Caticlan, gateway airport of the country’s most popular tourist destination Boracay island. The carrier stated officially that “The engine of the 11-month-old ATR 72-500 aircraft will be checked by an international maintenance crew from Cebu Pacific” -

Brazil Helicopter Crash

What: AgustaWestland A109C Helicopter en route from the coastal resort town of Parati to Itupeva
Where: (near Sao Paulo) in Brazil’s northeastern state of Ceara.
When: Monday 01/05
Who: Pilot and copilot were hospitalized. One businessman (Gilberto Ramalho) was the only fatality, 5 in all were injured.
Why: The pilot was about to land at Ramalho’s famiy farm in Itupeva when the helicopter exploded. On board were the pilot, copilot, a business couple, their teenage daughter and her friend. Three passengers got out quickly–the pilot and copilot were severely burned. The security camera at Ramalho’s farm recorded the impact. -

Where: wooded area in the Bogue Chitto community, Mississippi

Who: Monty Hudson
Why: Hudson and his brother (in a separate plane) were traveling from Greenville and encountered bad weather. The plane dropped off radar in Alabama Friday–Hudson died Friday–and was missing until Monday. WHen the wreckage was found in Neshoba County, it was hanging nose down in pine trees at 5:30 p.m. two miles northeast of Bogue Chitto off Road 765. Apparently the plane had caught on fire after crashing. -
Quebec Piper Crash

What: single-engine 1968 Piper Cherokee en route after refueling in Quebec City en route to Saint John, N.B.
Where: near Buckland*, 90 kilometres southeast of Quebec City.
When: Tuesday
Who: pilot Jesse Barrie, and two surviving passengers: Dan Weiher and Stephanie Shipley. There were two fatalities: Pilot Jesse Barrie and passenger Jeffrey McClymont
Why: No cause has been determined.After Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre at CFB Trenton, Ont received a 911 call from the female survivor of the crash,rescue searchers parachuted in and the two survivors were found; they were still alive, though not outfitted for the winter weather conditions. They are described as being “frozen” when they were airlifted by helicopter at 10:30 a.m to Quebec city.

Who: The pilot Mark Sherman, was the only one aboard
Why: Prior to landing, the pilot had to circle as another plane was on the runway. His plane lost power, landed 200 feet NE of the runway and skidded 50 yards until the wheels and tailsection broke off. Sherman who suffered a cracked vertebra was taken to Allen County Hospital and then transferred to Wichita hospital . -
