    British Airways Merging with Iberia

A merger is pending between British Airways and a merger Spanish carrier Iberia. Both airlines are heavily in debt and are attempting to cut costs and improve efficiency.

Brand names will be retained, as well as 419 aircraft and 265 destinations, and headquarters will be in London. New practices and working conditions may cause cabin crew strikes, but the job cuts will be mostly directed toward ground crew and airport check-in.

    In George’s Opinion

One hopes that they don’t go overboard cutting ground crew. Maintenance shortcuts cause broken planes.

DOT Press Release: Travel Agency Fined

    Office of Public Affairs

    DOT 178-09
    Thursday, November 12, 2009
    Contact: Bill Mosley
    Tel.: (202) 366-4570

DOT Administrative Law Judge Approves Ultimate Fares Settlement

The internet travel agency Ultimate Fares has been fined $600,000 and its owner $30,000 for violations of advertising regulations under a settlement approved by a U.S. Department of Transportation Administrative Law Judge (ALJ).

The fine, which would be the largest ever assessed for advertising violations, will become final in 30 days unless the Department decides to review the action or a petition for review is filed.

An investigation by the Department’s Aviation Enforcement Office found that Ultimate Fares failed to include the federal excise tax and the service fee it charged to consumers in fares published on its website between March 2008 and September 2009. This violated the Department’s requirement that published airfares must state the full price to be paid including service fees and any ad valorem tax, such as the Federal excise tax, which is assessed as a percentage of the fare. Ultimate Fares continued to omit the tax from its stated fares even after the Enforcement Office began its investigation, according to the consent order issued by ALJ Richard C. Goodwin. Ultimate Fares also failed to disclose which flights were being operated on a code-share basis as required by the Department’s rules.

In addition to the $30,000 penalty assessed against Ultimate Fares’ owner Roni Herskovitz, he also will be barred from any involvement in the online air travel agency business for 12 months.

The consent order and other documents in the case are available on the Internet at www.regulations.gov, docket DOT-OST-2009-0002.

    Flightplan Brings Down The House

View Klein Grönau in a larger map

What: Ryanair Boeing 737-800 en route from Milan Italy to Hamburg Germany
    Where: Luebeck
    When: Nov 12th 2009
Why: The low-flying Boeing was apparently flying low when vibrations from the plane rattled the tile roof and collapsed the chimney.

    George’s Point of View

If this were in the U.S., the airport would do its best to (as quietly as possible) purchase the house. I’m assuming this is one of those properties in the immediate neighborhood of the “offending” airport. So much of what happens depends on whether or not the homeowner wants to move, if the property predates the airport, local laws and agreements already in place. Will there be a lawsuit, or an amicable meeting over a common negotiating table? Depends on the lawyer. Who knows? It may be the airport who sits across the table from the homeowner—or it may be a local contractor whose work is less than stellar.

    Crash: Coming Soon

British Channel 4 is deliberately crashing a jet loaded with cameras and sensors.

Two former US navy pilots will set the plane on autopilot and then parachute out before the plane crashes in the desert.

The location of the 300 seat jet crash will not be disclosed. This is the latest in sensationalist programming designed for ratings (but masquerading as scientific research.) According to Channel 4, “It’s going to be designed as a survivable crash. There is no point in atomising the plane – we wouldn’t learn anything from it.”

The plane won’t be occupied but that doesn’t mean there aren’t bloody consequences. Apparently this new series is coming at the cost of axing established thrill-a-minute programming like “wife swap.”
