    Brazzaville Cargo FLight Crash Fatalities Updated to 32


    What: Aero-Services for Trans Air Congo Ilyhushin IL-76T freighter en route from Pointe Noire to Brazzaville

    Who: 30 fatalities, 14 injured *Death toll rises to 32
    Why: A Trans Air Congo cargo jet landed in rainy conditions in Brazzaville, one report says the plane overran the runway, went through the airport fence, crossed a street and slammed by buildings into a ravine. It was reported that the brakes failed but the Congolese police said rainy weather was the cause. Another report says the landing failed and the pilot crashed when attempting to go-round.

    The impact area is a residential area in the Mselou district of Brazzaville

    The crew of the jet died in the crash as well as 19 on the ground, and fourteen injured were hospitalized at Makelekelele hospital, Center University Hospital and a military hospital.

    Ownership of the plane has been reported all over the board:
    1: Air Highnesses/Aero-Service leases the plane to Trans Air Congo. The plane was manned by an Armenian crew. Aero-Service is banned by the EU.
    2: The Armenian company RIDGE AIRWAYS LLC, ARMENIA, RDG owns the plane, and it was flying for Aero-Service.

    Southwest Emergency Landing in San Diego

    What: Southwest Airlines 737 Flight 3252 en route from from San Diego to Baltimore
    Where: Lindbergh Field
    When: Dec 1, 2012, 7:15 a.m.
    Who: 129 passengers, 5 crew
    Why: As the plane was taking off, a flight attendant smelled smoke. The pilot returned to San Diego and made an emergency landing on Lindbergh Field. Oxygen masks were deployed but there were no injuries.

    The plane was slated for inspection and will be removed from service until the issue is solved.

    Russian Tatarstan Airbus Ends Up in Kazan Airport Snowbank

    Where: Kazan, Tatarstan, Russia
    When: Dec 1, 2012 8:30 am
    Who: 109 passengers
    Why: Preparing for take-off to go to Moscow at 8:30, the Tatarstan Airlines Airbus overran the runway, ending up in a snowbank. The problem according to LifeNews was ice on the runway.

    No passengers were injured. A wing is mired in the bank of snow, tying up the runway for takeoffs and landings.

    The flight was delayed until 13:00 Moscow time. The incident is under investigation.

    American Killed in Bahama Helicopter Crash

    What: Pioneer Caribbean Logistics Limited Twin Star helicopter en route from Marsh Harbour to Baker’s Bay
    Where: Great Guana Cay, North Abaco, Bahamas
    When: Nov 22, 2012, 1 p.m.
    Who: 4 injured, 1 fatality
    Why: The party aboard the helicopter was landing at a luxury resort community, Baker’s Bay Golf & Ocean Club on Great Guana Cay, when gusty winds blew the chopper into a spin and out of control. The helicopter’s rotor blades struck the ground near the Baker’s Bay townhomes, and the tail broke off. The pilot was injured, and hospitalized. One passenger, Lance Valdez, died on impact.

    Valdez founded Pioneer Capital and lived in New York before he and his family moved to the Bahamas.

    Jeffrey Soffer was also aboard the plane. Soffer was injured along with Dan and Paula Riordan. Soffer owns the Fountainebleau Miami Beach, condos in Las Vegas, the Bahamas and Washington D.C and is an investor in Turnberry Associates. Dan Riordan is also with Turnberry. The injured were taken by boat to Marsh Harbour.

    From Marsh Harbour, the crash victims were flown by racing-team owner Roger Penske’s private jet to Miami where Soffer and the Riordans were hospitalized at Miami’s Ryder Trauma Center. One of the injured was taken to Nassau.

    Civil Aviation Department investigators traveled to Abaco to begin examining the crash. The wreckage has been moved to a secure location. The Bahamas Ministry of Transportation and Aviation has completed its preliminary report on the Abaco helicopter crash. The report indicates that the airframe, engine and propeller manufacturers and designers have been notified of the accident.

    Inter-Island Flight Ditches In Indian Ocean After Moroni Take-off

    When: Nov 27, 2012
    Who: 29 aboard-25 passengers, 4 crew
    Why: According to passengers accounts, the plane took off and was leaking. Another reports that an engine failed. The pilot intended to return to the airport but instead managed to ditch safely in the Ocean within five minutes of take-off. Both pilot and copilot had over 5000 hours of flight experience.

    The pilot suffered head trauma but no one else was reported as injured.

    The leaking plane had passed DGAC inspection one week before the accident.

    The rescue/recovery of the crew and passengers was performed by local fishermen.

    Sudan Hard Landing

    Why: On landing the Antonov AN-26B cargo plane in the Sudan, pilots skidded off the runway.

    The left main gear collapsed just short of a Yida refugee settlement.

    The plane was carrying medical supplies.

    Texas Utility Helicopter Crashes with 1 Fatality

    Who: 2 aboard, 1 fatality
    Why: While hovering above ground, the aircraft was holding a passenger suspended fifty feet below. THe passenger was working on a power line a hundred feet above ground.

    The helicopter lost power and fell. Pilot Keith Hard was sustained back injuries in the crash and was hospitalized at Childress Regional Medical Canter. Jonathan David Suhr was working on the power line and impacted the ground when the helicopter fell. Suhr was taken to Childress Regional Medical Center where he died.

    The NTSB is investigating.

    Piper Crash Kills Florida Couple

    Where: Onion Mountain, near Simsbury, CT

    Why: Donald Derocher, 73, and Josephine Derocher, 74, were en route to visit family in Connecticut when their plane dropped from radar into an area of difficult access.

    The plane struck the Onion Mountain, and was located crashed in the Simsbury-owned Onion Mountain Park. Rescuers used chain saws to clear a path to the wreckage,

    Cathay Pacific Makes Emergency Landing

    Why: While en route, the Cathay Pacific developed a pressurization problem and had to make an emergency landing in Alaska. There were no injuries. When the pressurization problem developed, oxygen masks were deployed.

    Cathay Pacific and the Civil Aviation Department will be investigating.

    Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and an alternative flight.

    The cause of the pressurization problem is speculated to be a malfunctioning valve in the air system

    What: PIA Airbus 310 en route from Karachi to London
    Where: Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah international airport

    Who: 168 passengers, 16 crew
    Why: A Pakistan International Airlines plane took off from Karachi but developed a problem, After 55 minutes into the 8 hour flight, pilots diverted to Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah international airport. They made a safe landing. Reports are there was a technical problem.

    Passengers reported hearing three bangs and saw flames shooting from the engine.

    A television report said there was a fire, but PIA denied there was a fire.

    Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

    Air France Rio-Paris Airbus Loses Engine, Diverts to Casablanca

    What: Air France Airbus A330 en route from Rio to Paris
    Where: Casablanca
    When: October 16, 2012
    Who: 201 passengers, 12 crew
    Why: After taking of from Rio on Thursday, one of the Airbus330-200 engines was damaged.

    Pilots diverted to Casablanca where they made a safe landing.

    No injuries were reported.

    A replacement jet was provided.

    The diversion was no doubt a white-knuckled flight, as the Airbus A330 is the same model as the one that killed 216 in 2007 when pilots became confused with incorrect speed readings likely caused by obstruction of the pitot tubes and flew the plane at the incorrect angle, causing it to lose altitude and crash.

    Emirates Flight Loses Engine, Diverts to Sydney

    When: Nov 11, 2012
    Why: After takeoff, one engine on the Emirates Airlines Sydney-Dubai flight developed a problem and was shut down. Passengers reported hearing a bang and saw flames from the engine. We do not know if it was a bird strike.

    Pilots dumped fuel, returned to Sydney and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided alternative flights.

    Tropic Air Táxi Emergency Landing in São Paulo

    Why: The corporate jet sustained substantial damage in a runway excursion. The captain, co-pilot and passenger were all injured on landing three people were injured, one with head trauma, one with chest injuries one hospitalized with lumbar spine injury. The plane landed, bounced and continued down a slope where it crashed at the perimeter fence near Avenida dos Bandeirantes.

    The accident closed Congonhas Airport for an hour afterwards. At the time of the accident, the plane was in good standing with the Annual Maintenance Inspection (AMI) and the Certificate of Airworthiness (CA) was valid until November 2013.

    Bemidji Aviation Flight Gear Collapse

    Turkish Chopper Crashes in Storm on Herekol mountain

    Why: Three crew members and 14 police special forces were aboard the Turkish Sikorsky S-70 when it crashed in poor weather conditions.

    The weather was described as heavy fog and rain.

    The official statement by Siirt province governor Ahmet Aydin was that the “… helicopter hit a hill due to unfavourable weather conditions caused by a thick fog and heavy rains.”

    Algerian Air Cargo Crash in France

    What: Algerian Air Force CASA C-295M Cargo Plane en route from Paris to Algiers
    Where: Saint-Germain-du-Teil, near Avignon, France

    Who: 6 aboard, 6 fatalities
    Why: The Algerian Cargo plane crashed in Southern France near the village of Trelans, killing two military personnel and four civilians.

    Firefighters recovered the remains of four civilians and two soldiers from the burning wreckage.

    14 vehicles from Lozere carried 25 firefighters; and from Aveyron six vehicles brought 25 firefighters. An Air Force helicopter also assisted.

    The research departmemt of the Paris Air Police and the Criminal Research Institute of the National Gendarmerie de Rosny-sous-Bois were dispatched to determine the cause of the crash.

    Piper Crashes in Chilean Yard injuring Pilots

    Why: After taking off from Tobalaba Airport (aka Santiago/La Reina-Eulogio Sánchez Airport), the plane crashed 500 meters away, in a field adjacent to commercial property in ??Avenida Ossandón.

    Pilots Sergio Canilla Canales and Jorge Juacida Ramírez were injured and transported to the hospital.

    The plane struck a tree and a structure in a residential yard, according to firefighters. Four fire companies assisted in rescuing the pilots.

    The Directorate General of Civil Aviation is investigating.

    Fed Ex Crash in Wichita

    Who: 1 fatality
    Why: Pilot Brian Quinn had taken off from Wichita Mid-Continent Airport but turned back, declaring Mayday, after developing engine trouble, with “oil on the windshield.”

    The pilot landed in a grass field, crossed it and struck a tree row two miles south of the airport.

    He died at the scene. Sedgwick County and Wichita emergency workers responded. The accident is under investigation.

    S7 Emergency Landing

    Who: between 98 and 112 aboard
    Why: Stanislav Khokhlov, a pilot for S7 Airlines made an emergency landing at Novokuznetsk-Spichenkovo Airport. He made a smooth landing with a missing landing gear wheel.

    The plane was examined in Domodedovo before take-off. The tire was not found on the runway at Novokuznetsk-Spichenkovo Airport.

    No emergency teams were on standby as the plane was making a routine landing.

    What: Aerolineas Argentinas Airbus A340-200 en route from Madrid to Buenos Aires
    Where: Madrid
    When: Nov 5th 2012
    Why: On takeoff, the flight developed problems with the flaps.

    Pilots had to dump fuel, and return to the airport where they made a safe landing an hour and a half later.

    In Ezeiza due to a trade union dispute, 38 flights were cancelled, nearly half of which were Aerolíneas flights.

    Air India Flight Makes Emergency Landing

    Why: Two engineers supervising paving works in Confresa lost control of the plane on approach to the airport.

    What: Single engine Inpaer Excel
    Where: Taquarinhas beach, Camboriu
    When: Nov 3, 2012
    Who: Two adults, 1 child, 2 fatalities
    Why: The flight went down in the ocean near Taquarinhas beach. The pilot and another adult aboard were killed. An eleven year old boy who was aboard survived the crash and has been hospitalized. The flight had taken off from Porto Belo, Santa Catarina. The aircraft sank around 10 a.m.

    Fishermen rescued the eleven year old, tossing him a floatation device. He was hospitalized at City Hospital Ruth Cardoso.

    The remains of pilot Julius Mandelli and his adult passenger were retrieved by rescue crews on jet skis and ski boats.

    Aeroflot Emergency Landing
