    Fed Ex Crash in Wichita

    What: Federal Express turboprop Cessna Caravan
    Where: West 47th Street South, Wichita Mid-Continent Airport
    When: Nov. 6, 2012
    Who: 1 fatality
    Why: Pilot Brian Quinn had taken off from Wichita Mid-Continent Airport but turned back, declaring Mayday, after developing engine trouble, with “oil on the windshield.”

    The pilot landed in a grass field, crossed it and struck a tree row two miles south of the airport.

    He died at the scene. Sedgwick County and Wichita emergency workers responded. The accident is under investigation.

    Fed Ex Plane Lands with Tire Missing

    What: FedEx ATR-42-300 en route from Minneapolis/St Paul to Duluth
    Where: Duluth
    When: Sept 29, 2012
    Who: crew
    Why: A Fed Ex flight landed safely at Duluth International Airport on one tire.

    The flight circled the airport for an hour before making a safe landing minus a tire. The tire went missing somewhere en route and did a flyby to confirm before circling and eventually landing.

    The event is under investigation.

    What: Air Contractors Avion de Transport Regional ATR-42-300 en route from Rome to Ancona
    Where: Rome
    When: Feb 16th 2012
    Who: flight crew (cargo flight)
    Why: On takeoff, the engine caught fire.

    The flight was cancelled. The situation is under investigation. Maintenance is examining the right engine.

    Alarm ON Fed Ex Canada Flight

    What: Fed Ex/Morningstar Boeing 737-200 en route from Winnipeg to Calgary
    Where: Winnipeg
    When: May 3rd 2011
    Why: The plane was on the runway when the pilot received an indication of fire. The fire indication would not shut down, even after the plane stopped. Emergency services responded. The plane was “rebooted” and the indication shut down.

    (Just like my kitchen alarm that goes off whenever I cook, regardless of whether something is burning or not. I promise it wasn’t me. I promise I wasn’t cooking in the non-existent galley.)

    Fed Ex Dubai-Paris Flight Lands in Mumbai

    What: Fed Ex en route from Dubai to Paris
    Where: Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai, India

    Why: While en route on a routine cargo flight, the plane’s fire alarm went off. The crew made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati but no fire was found. Emergency status was withdrawn after inspection and the flight continued safely.

    Sacramento Fuel Emergency

    What: FedEx cargo Airbus A310 en route from Memphis to Reno
    Where: Sacramento International Airport
    When: December 23, 2010
    Who: 4 crew
    Why: While en route, the plane ran low on fuel and diverted to Sacramento, landing with emergency crews on standby. There was no damage, and no injuries.

    Suspicious Packages on UPS and Fed Ex Cargo Flights

    What: UPS flight
    Where: East Midlands
    When: Oct 29 2010
    Why: A suspicious package on a UPS cargo flight (a toner cartridge with wires attached and a white powder) has raised the US Transportation Security Administration to order UPS flights searched for suspicious cargo. Officials indicate that tests on the device came back negative for explosives.

    Yemen Shipment Embargo
    In cooperation with the FBI, local authorities have confiscated a suspicious package at the FedEx facility in Dubai. The shipment originated in Yemen and as an additional safety measure, FedEx has embargoed all shipments originating from Yemen. The Company is cooperating fully with the authorities on this matter; any additional information regarding this matter must come from the FBI.

    Fed Ex Flight Diverts to Mumbai

    Why: The plane’s instrumentation indicated a fire in the cargo hold. The flight was diverted to Mumbai where they made a safe landing. However, at 18.24 pm on landing no fire was detected.

    Where: Will Rogers World Airport.
    When: Sept 7 2010, 5 p.m.
    Who: crew
    Why: While en route, the plane indicated smoke in the cargo hold. The pilot diverted to Oklahoma City, where they made a safe landing. No fire was found.

    A contractor, Wiggins Airways, out of Manchester, New Hampshire operated the plane.

    What: Fedex McDonnell Douglas MD-11 en route from Anchorage to Memphis,TN
    Where: Indianapolis
    When: Jul 31st 200
    Who: 2 crew
    Why: On experiencing hydraulics failure, the flight diverted to Indianapolis, landing safely just after midnight. No injuries were reported.

    It is a shame they diverted FROM Memphis, where the Fed Ex hub is, and complete repair facilities.

    Emergency Landing in Reno

    What: Fedex Boeing 757-200 en route from Reno to Memphis
    Where: Reno-Tahoe International Airport
    When: May 26th 2009 7:45 p.m.
    Who: Fed Ex crew
    Why: The plane’s emergency light indicated overheating after leaving Reno, and the crew requested to return, before entering a holding pattern over Carson City and Minden to burn off fuel. The plane landed safely in Reno; the packages were not delayed.
