  • Passenger Plane Crashed in London…. No Wait, It was only an Emergency Drill

simulated plane crashAs part of a pre-planned training exercise, more than 220 personnel from the Scotland Yard, London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade, Specialist Urban Search and rescue teams were called on April 26, to tackle a passenger jet plane crash in East London.

An abandoned mill in London’s Dockland was prepared as the crash site. 400 tonnes of rubble was used to cover the fuselage from Boeing 737. Real smoke and flames were used and the black box simulators were sunk in water for the dive teams to recover.

The emergency crews were not informed about the exercise beforehand, although, the local residents were made aware.

According to the LAS director of operations, Jason Killens, “Although this type of incident is extremely rare, it is important that we work together and plan now so we can continue to be well prepared for every possibility,”

The 3-day training drill, hosted by the London Fire Brigade, is believed to be the biggest of its kind in Britain.

Ron Dobson, the London Fire Commissioner said “It is only through this kind of exercise that we can fully test our plans and ensure that all the agencies which would be involved can respond effectively together, in a co-ordinated manner.’

    Wake Turbulence Found Guilty

aircraft.jpg__atkinson_Preliminary investigation of the Indian Air Force Lockheed C-130J-30 Super Hercules that crashed on Friday March 28, 2014, killing five, indicates that the accident may have been the result of wake turbulence.

The Hercules that crashed 72 miles from Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh was in a twoship formation on a training mission when it flew into the wake turbulence of the lead aircraft. Because of the low altitude (300 feet), the crew could not establish control in order to avert the crash.

The mission was flying from Agra-Kheria Air Force Station to Gwalior Airport, India.

Although the findings reportedly rule out “technical error,” incidents resulting from wake turbulence (i.e. composed of wingtip vortices and jet wash) are generally considered pilot error. Jet wash gases from engines dissipate quickly, but vortices from the wings can last three minutes.

Although most incidents resulting from a plane flying in another’s wake turbulence are reported in takeoff and landing situations at airstrips, it is also a hazard in formation flying, so that planes in the far position must concentrate on staying on or above leader’s glide path. Vortices sink at a rate of 90 to 150 meters/minute

The ICAO has separation minima standards for take-off and landing.

New Malaysian MH370 Investigation Team Appointed by Government

In order “…to evaluate, investigate and determine the actual cause of the accident so similar accidents could be avoided in the future” an international team has been appointed by the government of Malaysia to investigate MH370.

Australia reports debris washing ashore that may be connected to the crash. If the debris proves to be from the plane, ocean patterns may be studied to help establish positioning. If the debris is related, it will be the first hard evidence found.

The current search focuses in a 10-kilometer radius of the area of pings sourced, it is believed, from MH370’s black boxes before the ping batteries ran out.

Poor weather conditions have curtailed air searches, although ships have continued.

The position of Malaysian authorities is that the plane was deliberately diverted, but mechanical failure has not been ruled out.

#MH370 Statement by Orion Captain regarding #Search Status

In a public statement, after the April 8 day’s search for #MH370, RAAF P3 Orion captain Flt Lt glasssaid that he was optimistic about the wreckage being found.

Unlike the AF447 search at a parallel point in the search timeline one month in, there has been no visual confirmation of any wreckage or debris, possibly due to tropical storms in the Indian Ocean. The official statement is that the pings have been narrowed down to a twelve mile radius, but searchers are still trying to narrow this area.

Once the area has been narrowed down, an autonomous underwater vehicle will be deployed in a grid (so-called Mowing Lawn pattern) until wreckage has been located.

If the wreckage is found soon, it will have taken twenty-three months less than the search for Air France 447. So one should be perhaps less optimistic about the search, and more determined.

Most recently, Australia announced the search area down to 75,000 sq km. Searchers plan to keep using the Ocean Shield, because it searches more area faster. Once the area is pinned down, they plan to deploy the AUV.

Why would the Remus be ideal for the @MH370 search?

Tomahawk PA38 Crashed in Hastings, 2 Dead

    TomHawk

A Hawkes Bay and East Coast Aero Club-owned Tomahawk PA38 plane crashed at the riverbed near Maraekakaho, 12km past the aerodrome, in Hastings, NZ.

The incident happened at about 11 am on March 23, 2014.  Bruce Govenlock, president of the Club said it was too early to determine the cause of crash; it could be engine failure or a mechanical problem.  The weather was fine and the 30-year-old aircraft was very well maintained.

The eye-witnesses heard the engine of the plane making strange sounds before the crash; one of them described it as “coughing and spluttering.”

Those killed in the crash included an experienced club instructor and a visitor from the UK who was preparing for his pilot’s license validation exam.

The fully qualified pilot from the UK had been flying the single engine plane for half an hour before the crash.  He took off from Bridge Pa Aerodrome for practice.
