British Airways Jet Crash-Lands in South Africa; No injuries Reported
British Airways jet crash-landed at O. R. Tambo International Airport near Johannesburg, South Africa, on October 26.The Boeing 737-400 plane, operating as Comair flight BA6234, was flying from Port Elizabeth, Cape Town when its left landing gear collapsed upon landing.
There were 94 passengers and 6 crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained unhurt.
An airline spokesperson confirmed the incident and said, “Comair and the relevant authorities will be conducting the necessary investigation over the coming days and weeks. As soon as more information is on hand we will be releasing it to the media.”

Vulcan Bomber Makes Emergency Landing in Scotland
A Vulcan bomber had to make an emergency landing at Prestwick Airport, South Ayrshire, Scotland, on September 6.The plane had to make an emergency landing due to a problem with its landing gear.
It was the last flying Vulcan bomber of its kind, belonging to Robin Hood Airport Doncaster Sheffield, England. The flight was arranged for an airshow, which had to be cancelled after the incident.
The plane landed safely and was returned to Doncaster after examination.

A seaplane made an emergency landing at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport in Florida, on May 22.
According to Broward Sheriff’s Office officials, the pilot forgot to extend gear before landing the Cessna 208 aircraft. The plane skidded down the runway before coming to halt.
None of the two people aboard was injured in the accident.
Authorities said the plane is registered to a resident of Salt Lake City, Utah and was flying from the Bahamas at the time.

SkyWest Airlines flight 5316, operating as United Express, made an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport, California, on May 11.Emergency was declared aboard the plane, coming from Monterey, California, after its landing gear failed to fully deploy.

The pilot then turned back and made a safe emergency landing in Managua. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.
According to director of Nicaraguan Institute of Civil Aviation Mario Altamirano, “They were preparing for an emergency landing and made it in what we call ‘dead time,’ in other words, when it wouldn’t conflict with other flights.”

United Express Flight Diverts to Eisenhower National Airport
United Express Flight 4912 had to make an emergency landing at Eisenhower National Airport in Wichita, Kansas, on February 25.Airport authorities said the flight, operated by Republic Airlines, was heading from Denver to Kansas City when it had to declare emergency due to a landing gear issue.
The plane was then diverted to Eisenhower Airport where it landed uneventfully. None of the 67 passengers and 4 crew members was hurt.
The Bombardier Q-400 aircraft was taken for inspection while the passengers and crew members were taken to Kansas City via a bus.

Small Plane Crash-Lands at Rapid City Regional Airport
A single-engine propeller plane crash-landed at Rapid City Regional Airport, South Dakota, on the night of February 6.The incident happened when the pilot and his wife were flying from Wyoming to Wisconsin.
Authorities said the aircraft’s electrical system malfunctioned around 80 miles from Rapid City. The pilot and his wife then used their iPads to navigate to the airport in the dark.
Landing gear could not be deployed due to the electrical system failure and the plane had to land on its belly. Fire officials said sparks were shooting from the fuselage as the plane skidded on the runway.
Both occupants of the plane remained unharmed. Their identities have not yet been released.
The incident is under investigation.

Small Plane Crash-Lands at Tupelo Regional Airport
A single-engine Cessna made a soft crash-landing at Tupelo Regional Airport in Tupelo, Mississippi, shortly before 6:30 p.m. on February 3.
The plane was returning from Starkville to Tupelo when it developed some landing gear issues.
According to Tupelo Fire Chief Thomas Walker, the aircraft’s back landing gear deployed normally but front gear did not come down. It kept skidding on its nose for about 30 yards before coming to halt in the middle of runway.
The pilot, who was the only one aboard, remained unharmed.
The accident is being investigated.

Japan-Bound Delta Flight Returns to Atlanta on Reports of Smoke
Delta flight 95 had to turn back for emergency landing at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport, Georgia, on January 18.The Boeing 777, en-route from Atlanta to Narita, Japan, had to return after a pilot of another flight reported smoke coming out of its landing gear.
The plane landed safely and all 308 people aboard remained unharmed.
Firefighters and technicians inspected the plane and cleared it at around 1 p.m. after which it again took off for Japan.

Private Plane Makes Emergency Landing at Louisville International Airport
A private Beechcraft King F90 Turbo-prop made an emergency landing at Louisville International Airport in Kentucky, at around 8 p.m. on January 13.Airport spokesperson Trish Burke confirmed the incident saying that the pilot declared emergency due to a landing gear malfunction.
The aircraft’s landing gear failed to deploy on approach and it had to land on its belly. There were 8 people aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.
It is believed that the flight was en-route from Syracuse Hancock International Airport, New York to Clark Regional Airport, Sellersburg.
The NTSB and the FAA are investigating.

Plane Crash Landed at Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport
A Fokker 50 turboprop plane, operated by Skyward International Aviation, crash landed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, Kenya, early morning on January 4.The authorities said the plane, en-route from Wajir to Nairobi, landed on its belly due to landing gear failure. None of the 6 people aboard was injured.
The flight operations were temporarily halted at the airport and all incoming flights were diverted to Mombasa airport. The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) later released a statement saying, “Kenya Civil Aviation Authority has concluded the inspection of the runway at JKIA. JKIA Runway 6 has been cleared by Kenya Civil Aviation Authority and is now open. Arrival and Departure flight operations have resumed.”
According to the local media reports, the aircraft was struck by birds upon take off, one of which got stuck in the landing gear mechanism.

A Dornier Do 228 aircraft landed on its belly and skidded some 700 feet before coming to halt at Taitung Airport in Taiwan, on December 21.The accident happened after the co-pilot forgot to deploy the landing gear while approaching the runway. The Daily Air pilots were simulating left-engine failure and emergency landings at the time, however, failure to lower the landing gear was not pre-planned.
The plane was carrying only the pilot and the co-pilot at the time; both of them remained unharmed.
Taiwan’s Aviation Safety Council is investigating.

F-15 Jet Lands in Emergency at Frenso Base
An F-15 fighter plane had to make an emergency landing at the 144th Fighter Wing’s Air National Guard Base in Frenso, California, on December 19.
The jet took off for a routine training flight, however, it had to land back in emergency due to a landing gear malfunction. Col. Clay Garrison, a 144th Fighter Wing commander, said the plane’s wheel failed to retract after it took off and therefore, an arresting gear was employed to help it land safely.
The pilot remained uninjured.
The aircraft was taken for examining the cause of landing gear malfunction.

Plane Carrying Girls Volleyball Team Makes Rough Landing in Alaska
A twin-engine Piper Navajo aircraft, carrying the girls volleyball team from Koliganek, Alaska, had to make a rough landing at King Salmon airport, Alaska, on December 10.
The plane, transporting the volleyball team for state tournament in Anchorage, had to land in emergency after its landing gear got damaged during take-off from Koliganek.
The aircrafts’ landing gear buckled after it touched the runway and skidded some 1,000 feet before coming to stop.
All the passengers and crew members remained unharmed.
Team’s Assistant coach Anastasia Ishnook said, “Our girls are really strong…They kept it together…The pilot was really nice…He said he was sorry it happened today but he couldn’t have had better passengers.”

Small Plane Makes a Bumpy Landing at Essendon Airport
A small twin-engine aircraft had to make an emergency landing at Essendon Airport in Melbourne, Australia, at around 3 p.m. on November 26.The plane was on a flight from Adelaide to Mount Gambier when the pilot noticed a problem with nose landing gear. The 29-year-old pilot then diverted the plane to Essendon Airport where it made a nose landing.
MFB tweeted after the incident: “A bumpy landing for a pilot at #Essendon airport. The nose wheel collapsed on impact but luckily no fire or injuries!”
The Australian Transport Safety Bureau is investigating.
