    Locked in a Plane

Asleep unnoticed in the back of the plane at the time of disembarkation from his United Express/Expressjet flight from Lafayette, La. to Houston, passenger Tom Wagner woke up at the end of the line–in the dark, locked inside a cold plane empty of crew and passengers.

What should be the consequences of being locked inside a plane? Flight attendants have walk-thru procedures, don’t they? At any rate, however the situation began, Wagner had his cell phone with him and was able to initiate the ending. He just called someone who called the airline, and the airline called the crew, and somebody showed up and let him out.

Houston was a layover for Wagner, so after a (free) motel night, he was given a $250 voucher to finish his trip.

    Plane Hits Car in Detroit

    Hello three stooges airport, Detroit.

Delta Expressjet Flight 5365 was backing up before taking off for Tulsa (picture cartoon airplane backing up, and running in place. You know how cartoon figures always do that before they go fast…)

The wingtip of the Expressjet plane got stuck in the window of a vehicle around 4 pm on Sept 9 2013.

The vehicle is owned, operated and parked on the tarmac of Detroit Metro Airport by Skychef, which caters food for airlines.

I wonder if Skychef caters food for Expressjet? I wonder if SkyChef should paint their vehicles bright orange and haul on their roof a Times-Square sized Bulletin board that says “Don’t Hit Me, I’m Just the Caterer.”

Apparently the car was stationary and the plane was backing up when the hang-up occurred.

Maybe the Skychef vehicle was where it was supposed to be, since they’ve got to get food to the planes. We’re pretty sure that the plane was where it was supposed to be. In fact, we’re not sure if we should be sending a bucket of pavement striping paint to the airport, or a pair of those rear view glasses advertised on the back of a comic book to the pilot. Heads up folks. That could be a very expensive fender bender.

ExpressJet Customer Service Update: Plot thickens…

    Where: diverted to Rochester
    When: August 9
    Who: 47 passengers
Why: The flight was diverted by storms to Rochester and landed safely which is certainly a good thing. But the terminal locked out the passengers until 6 a m…

    George’s Point of View

It’s amazing what a little investigation turns up. The pilot of Continental Express Flight 2816 pleaded for passengers to be allowed to enter the Rochester terminal.

But no one was at the terminal except for representatives of Mesaba Airlines who said that because Transportation Security Administration was gone, passengers couldn’t be allowed inside.

It looks like Mesaba Airlines is responsible for that hellish night that Continental/Expressjet passengers spent inside the plane. Did Mesaba Airlines even have the authority to lock them out?

I hope that Mesaba Airlines person who is on the record for saying no has unemployment insurance. They’re going to need it.

Why: The flight was diverted by storms to Rochester and landed safely which is certainly a good thing.

    George’s Point of View

Flight 2816 is going down in aviation customer service infamy. After landing safely at an airport with a closed terminal–with a crew that had run out of flying time so that an alternate crew had to be flown in–the passengers were basically locked in the plane overnight. After six hours of being stuck in the plane with no food, and a stinking bathroom, at 6 a m, understandably grumpy passengers streamed into the terminal to complain. It is not clear who is responsible (ExpressJet or Continental Airlines.) From the sound of the irate passengers, it’s difficult to say if they’d rather have compensation, or just be allowed in a no holds-barred boxing match with whoever is responsible.
