    Sumatra: Lion Air Skid

    What: Lion Air Boeing 737-400
    Where: Pekanbaru airport, Sumatra
    When: December 14, 2009
    Who: 165 passengers
    Why: On landing, the flight skidded off the runway. It took an hour to evacuate the panicked passengers via mobile stairway.

    After a maintenance check, a replacement crew resumed the flight hours later.

    Hard Landing in Tokyo

    What: United Airlines Boeing 747-400 en route from Bangkok to Tokyo
    Where: Tokyo
    When: Oct 25th 2009
    Why: After a hard landing at Tokyo’s Narita Airport, passengers debarked safely. The UA Boeing was examined after landing and damage was found on the underside of the #4 engine cowling as well as markings on the runway.

    Hard Airbus Landing in Lisbon Breaks Plane

    What: SATA Internacional Airbus A320-200 en route from Ponta Delgada to Lisbon.
    Where: Lisbon
    When: Aug 6th 2009
    Who: not available
    Why: The flight had such a hard touch down that it caused substantial landing gear damage, and several rivets separated from the wing.

    The plane involved became part of the SATA fleet on May 9. It is unclear if the flight involved was flying from Funchal or Ponta Delgada; and the date also is reportedly either the 5th or the 6th.

    Bad Landing in Bangkok, Casualty Reports Vary

    What: Bangkok Airways Aerospatiale ATR-72-500,en route from Krabi to Koh Samui Thailand
    Where: Koh Samui Thailand
    When: Aug 4th 2009
    Who: 68 passengers and 4 crew
    Why: While landing in heavy rain, the plane skidded off runway 35 at Koh Samui and into an old unused control tower. Public reports vary (between one and 41 deaths, including the captain).

  • What: Myanmar Airways Fokker F-28 Fellowship 4000 en route from Yangon-Mingaladon Airport to Sittwe-Civil Airport in Myanmar
    Where: Myanmar
    When: 06 JUN 2009 08:20
    Who: Three people were injured on landing.
    Why: While landing, the landing gear and one wing of the jet were damaged. Details of the landing are not yet available, but if we get sent another update, we will update this post.

    Really, a plane of this advanced age should carry a cane, or be carted out to the runway in a wheelchair. We don’t have the details of the landing, the weather, or the craft, but It’s no wonder the landing gear gave out.

    Hawaii Helicopter Crash

    What: 25th Combat Aviation Brigade OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter
    Where: Hawaii Wheeler Army Airfield runway
    When: 3:34 p.m May 27 2009
    Who: 2 deaths
    Why: While two soldiers assigned to the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade were running a maintenance test flight on the two seat rotor when the OH-58D Kiowa Warrior Helicopter made a hard-landing.

    *Col. Matthew Margotta:”the accident a “hard landing” because the pilots were in control of the aircraft when it went down.”

    The helicopter in question has been in service since 1991. Isn’t this well past the date for a helicopter’s active duty?

    Bad day for Saudi Arabian Airlines (or MD-90s)

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-90 en route from Jeddah to Yanbu
    Where: Yanbu
    When: May 8th 2009
    Why: On landing, the plane struck one wing onto the runway. The logo light in the wing tip sustained damage. THe pilot was suspended.

    What: Saudi Arabian Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-90 en route from from Jeddah to Riyadh Saudi Arabia
    Where: Riyadh
    When: May 8th 2009
    Who: 8 crew on board
    Why: On a ferry flight, after landing at Riyadh the plane skidded on a high speed turnoff, slid, turned, veered off the runway. The main gear collapsed and the left wing damaged made it a write-off.

    Coincidence? 2 MD-90s? Both Saudi Arabian Airlines? Did they rush their pilot’s training? Or maybe they trained down on the penny arcade 1991 model Sega R360 flight simulator down at the 7/11?

    Royal Air Maroc Boeing 767-300

    What: Royal Air Maroc Boeing 767-30 en route from Casablanca (Morocco) to New York John F. Kennedy Airport
    Where: JFK
    When: Apr 20th 2009
    Why: Wake turbulence was such that the landing was hard. Complaints about the hard landing prompted plane inspection which turned up wrinkles found in the fuselage. The plane was grounded for repairs and further inspection.

    Why: The pilot reported a power loss but was able to reach the airport. On landing, however, there was damage when it ran off the runway.

    Experimental Plane lands on on San Fernando Road


    What: experimental single-engine FlightStar
    Where: hard emergency landing on San Fernando Road several blocks from Whiteman Airport in the northern Los Angeles suburb of Pacoima in the San Fernando Valley.
    When: Wednesday just after 9 p.m.
    Who: The pilot’s name was not released.
    Why: The plane lost power as it approached the airport. The plane dodged utility lines and clipped a parked car and touched down on on San Fernando Road while vehicles swerved out of the way.

    Helicopter Lands Hard On Soft Ground

    What: Helicopter, from Bristow Academy, a helicopter flight school located at the Space Coast Regional Airport
    Where: Landing occurred off Highway 50, west of Interstate 95 in a marshy area in Brevard County.
    When: 11:45 a.m. Thursday
    Who: The helicopter was carrying an instructor and a student on a training exercise. Neither was injured but both were transported to Parrish Medical Center
    Why: When helicopter came in for a landing, it skidded in the marsh.
