American Way Magazine Commemorates 45 Years of Publication With a Full Redesign

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 11, 2011 /PRNewswire/ — American Way, the award-winning inflight magazine of American Airlines and American Eagle, commemorates 45 years of publication with a redesign which debuts with the first issue of 2011, onboard planes now.

“American Way is still the only inflight magazine published twice monthly, which is a great service to our frequent travelers,” said Susan Gordon, American Airlines Publishing President and Group Publisher. “We pride ourselves on consistently delivering an industry leading magazine to our customers, so it makes sense to redesign the magazine as our culture changes.”

Most notable will be the new American Way masthead, inspired by the typeface on a 1930s-era American Airlines DC-3. Redesigned departments include the combination of UpFront and DownLow to create a new super-department called Itineraries, as well as the addition of Briefs, which highlights both a celebrity and a destination.

“The goal was to bring a more contemporary and graphically pleasing palate to the magazine, while continuing to serve our readers as an invaluable source of information and entertainment,” said David Radabaugh, American Way Design Director.

Other changes include the addition of new maps and helpful widgets, the organization of stories in a more reader-friendly format, and incorporating an unconventional approach to original photography and illustration. Every issue can be found online in its entirety at www.americanwaymag.com.

American Airlines Statement Regarding Court Action Against Sabre

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 10, 2011 / — Today, American filed a lawsuit in Texas state court in Tarrant Country against Sabre. The lawsuit alleges that Sabre’s recent actions taken against American, including the biasing of American’s services in all Sabre flight displays, violates agreements between American and Sabre and harms American, the travel agent community, and the traveling public.

Also, American today filed a request for a temporary restraining order prohibiting Sabre from continuing to bias its display of American flights. We are gratified that, after a contested hearing, the Court has granted American’s request for interim relief, to be in effect until the Court considers American’s request for longer term relief.

The Court’s order prohibits Sabre from continuing its recently announced practice of intentionally making it difficult for American’s agents and customers from finding and purchasing American services in the Sabre global distribution system. American intends to vigorously pursue its litigation against Sabre, including seeking damages for other violations of our agreements.

Statement of American Airlines in Response to Sabre’s Actions

FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 5, 2011 / — American Airlines today received notice from Sabre that it has taken a set of punitive actions against the airline and its customers, despite the fact that American has met all its obligations and continues to work in good faith with Sabre.

The actions, which include biasing its shopping displays, are anti-consumer, anti-competitive and harmful to its subscribing agents.

Sabre’s actions are discriminatory and patently inconsistent with both its contractual obligations and its professed goal of ensuring full transparency for the benefit of consumers and travel agents. In contrast, the actions only serve to protect Sabre’s market position and attempt to force airlines and travel agencies to rely exclusively on its legacy systems that only lead to higher fares and fewer choices for consumers.

American is committed to working with all efficient distribution channels, including traditional travel agencies, online travel agencies and global distribution systems

American Airlines and American Eagle fares and schedules – including all international and domestic classes of service – are widely available through a number of outlets, including American’s own website, AA.com, which features our Lowest Fare Guarantee, as well as through American’s reservations agents, thousands of travel agencies in locations worldwide, online travel agencies such as Priceline.com and metasearch engines such as Kayak.com.

American Airlines Provides Business Update Following Commercial Disputes With Orbitz and Expedia

Company Thanks Customers For Continued Loyalty

FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 29, 2010 — American Airlines today thanked customers for their continued loyalty in the wake of a commercial dispute with two online travel agencies, Expedia and Orbitz, that is preventing American Airlines fares from being featured on those sites.

American Airlines said it has seen a year-over-year increase in its overall ticket sales since Dec. 21, when it removed its schedules and airfares for American Airlines and American Eagle flights from Orbitz.com and websites powered by Orbitz.com, and since Dec. 23, when Expedia.com began discriminating against American’s flights and schedules by listing them lower in the search display than those of other airlines.

While the year-over-year increase in ticket sales is roughly comparable to that seen earlier in December, American has noted a shift in ticket sales to other channels, notably online travel agencies, such as Priceline.com, and referrals from metasearch engines, such as Kayak.com, as well as increased volume on its own website, AA.com.

“Our results to date show that consumer choice is alive and well and that our customers continue to have thousands of options to purchase American’s competitive fares and convenient schedules,” said Derek DeCross, American’s Vice President and General Sales Manager. “It is also clear to us that other online travel sites and traditional travel agencies are capitalizing on this market opportunity to gain business. Beyond that, we want to thank our customers and travel partners for their continued loyalty and support. We appreciate your business.”

DeCross reiterated that American is committed to working with all distribution channels, including traditional travel agencies, online travel agencies and global distribution systems, to benefit from adopting its direct connection model, powered by Farelogix, which delivers to travel agencies and their customers more customized travel choices and options. There is no cost to tap into American’s direct connection.

“Our direct connection offers a path to a new era of buying and selling travel services,” DeCross added. “Traditionally, airline products have consisted of different flavors of airfares. In the future, however, we envision the world of travel evolving into a much wider variety of products and services beyond fares. Our direct connection will help travel agencies help their own customers by giving them access to customized choices and delivering the best value to travelers. We do not envision a future in which we only sell to our customers through our own branded website. Our goal is to have broad distribution channels and choices for our customers, with our products and services delivered efficiently and without unnecessary costs flowing through the process.”

American Airlines Schedules and Fares No Longer Available on Orbitz.com

Citing Failure to Reach a Mutually Beneficial Commercial Agreement American Revokes Orbitz Authority to Display and Sell American Airlines Fares

FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 21, 2010 — Effective immediately, American Airlines will discontinue displaying and selling fares through Orbitz (www.orbitz.com) and its subsidiary Orbitz for Business. Tickets for travel on American Airlines and American Eagle – including all international and domestic classes of service – are widely available through a number of outlets, including American’s own website, AA.com, which features our Lowest Fare Guarantee. Tickets, fares and schedules are also available through American’s reservations agents, thousands of travel agencies in locations worldwide, other online travel agencies such as Priceline.com, and metasearch engines such as Kayak.com.

“American Airlines regrets any inconvenience this may cause our customers. While we could not reach an agreement with Orbitz, we are committed to letting customers know of the multitude of options they have to purchase travel on American Airlines,” said Derek DeCross, Vice President – Sales. “In today’s competitive marketplace, it is important for American to be free to customize its product offerings to improve the customer experience as well as distribute its products in a way that does not result in unnecessary costs.”

American also continues to provide its fare content to travel agency partners, both through global distribution systems and through American’s own direct connection technology that is powered by Farelogix. There is no charge to agencies for using American’s direct connection, which allows travel agencies to offer their customers more complete and tailored travel choices, including fares and optional services

AA Credit Union Employees Donate $3,090 to the North Texas Food Bank Virtual can Drive

FORT WORTH, Texas, Dec. 20, 2010 — AA Credit Union has proudly presented the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) with a $3,090 donation as a result of the Credit Union’s weeklong virtual canned food drive.

In early December, Credit Union employees participated in a special Dress Down Days fund-raiser, contributing $5 a day or $20 for the entire week in exchange for being able to wear jeans and sneakers to work.

The drive was part of the North Texas Food Bank’s “Close the Gap on Hunger in North Texas” campaign. “Close the Gap” is the NTFB’s three-year initiative to unite the community to narrow the food gap by providing access to 50 million meals annually by 2011.

“Virtual Canned Food Drives eliminate the hidden costs associated with a regular canned food drive,” said Sophia Sindalovsky, Volunteer Coordinator of the NTFB. “It also provides much more assistance to North Texans by leveraging donations to provide four meals for every dollar raised. Giving has never been easier.” The Credit Union’s donation equates to nearly 12,360 meals for North Texans.

“After donating hundreds of pounds of canned goods in last year’s drive, we were excited — and somewhat relieved — to throw our efforts behind a virtual canned food drive this year,” said Pedro Noda, the fund-raiser’s director and eMarketing Manager at AA Credit Union. “We’re excited to make this donation on behalf of AA Credit Union and the many employees who helped make this possible.”

“This time of year, it is particularly important to remember those who are less fortunate,” said Angie Owens, AA Credit Union President and CEO. “I once again could not be more proud of all our employees for opening up their hearts to help the North Texas Food Bank reach such admirable goals.”

About American Airlines Federal Credit Union

AA Credit Union was founded in 1936, and today serves the present and retired employees of American Airlines, their family members and others who work in the air transportation industry. AA Credit Union has more than 223,000 member-owners and assets of more than $5 billion. As a cooperative financial services institution, the Credit Union’s goal is to provide the best possible benefits and services for its member-owners.

About the North Texas Food Bank

The North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) is a nonprofit hunger relief organization that distributes donated, purchased and prepared foods through a network of 1,146 feeding programs in 13 North Texas counties. The NTFB supports the nutritional needs of children, families and seniors through education, advocacy and strategic partnerships. Founded in 1982, the NTFB is a member of Feeding America (feedingamerica.org). Each month agency pantries distribute food to more than 53,000 families and on-site meal programs serve 435,000 meals/snacks. Every dollar donated to the NTFB provides four meals for the hungry. American Airlines and Japan Airlines Thank U.S. Department of Transportation on Final Order Allowing Antitrust Immunity

FORT WORTH, Texas and TOKYO, Nov. 10, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — American Airlines and Japan Airlines, members of the oneworld® Alliance, today thanked officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) for granting final approval to their joint request for antitrust immunity and plans for a joint business between North America and Asia.

“We appreciate the thorough review that DOT has given our request for antitrust immunity that will allow us to move forward with our joint business,” said Tom Horton, President of American Airlines. “We also look forward to officials from the United States government and the government of Japan signing an Open Skies agreement, which will allow for additional flights between the United States to Japan.”

“This final U.S. government approval, following the recent grant by Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, clears all regulatory procedures necessary for Japan Airlines and American Airlines to begin working on our joint business,” said Masaru Onishi, President of Japan Airlines. “We would like to express our gratitude to everyone involved in making this positive decision, and will from hence, move expeditiously towards creating more benefits for our passengers, our companies, our financial supporters and our countries.”

Hull Breach in American Airlines Flight

Click to view full size photo at Airliners.net

What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 from Miami,FL to Boston,MA
    Where: Miami
    When: Oct 26th 2010
Who: 154 passengers and 6 crew
Why: A half hour after takeoff, the plane developed rapid decompression at 31,000 feet requiring oxygen masks, an emergency descent and a return to Miami.

Maintenance found a one by two foot hole in the hull.

    George’s Point of View

    Maintenance, Maintenance, Maintenance!

Even with AD Directives issued, this was still missed. Was there telltale evidence prior to this event that could have prevented endangering 154 passengers and six crew?

The hole in the hull is not unprecedented. Sixteen months prior to flight AA-1640, Southwest Airlines (SWA) flight 2294, (another Boeing suffering a hole in the hull in July 13, 2009), the FAA has already issued Airworthiness Directive 2010-01-09 mandating inspection requirements. At that time, they ascribed the hull failure to a design fault: Fuselage skin failure due to preexisting fatigue at a chemically milled step.

It’s an easy enough thing to visualize-picture slightly squeezing an empty cola can, then blowing into it; and repeating the process, over and over. In a soda can, it would not take the 20 years this plane has been flying for the stressed areas to develop a crease, and eventually crack.

Not that a soda can is expected to sustain the significant pressures at 10,000+ feet, nor does it have the design flaw of chemical milling, nor is its skin made of single and double bonded layers. If it were, one could theoretically presume and anticipate metal fatigue to occur at the weakest location–the edges of where the metal is double-bonded.

In the Southwest Airlines event, it was observed that the progression of metal fatigue tends to be higher at the borders between chemically milled and non-chemically milled bays.

The inspection requirements in SB 737-53A1301 require inspections to detect cracks in the vulnerable areas (the chem-mill step) to avoid sudden fracture and failure of the fuselage skin panels.

Did this plane undergo “repetitive external non-destructive inspections to detect cracks in the fuselage skin“?

Carriers out there, when there are directives which indicate potential problems, pay attention!

If not for the stellar performance of this flight crew, this plane would have been a statistic.

Thank you, John D King for sending the links.

American Airlines and American Eagle Significantly Expand and Enhance Los Angeles Service

American and American Eagle to Increase Departures by 28 Percent and Add 10 New Domestic and International Destinations from Los Angeles International Airport (LAX)

American Eagle to Expand its LAX Terminal with $20 Million in Improvements

Additions Strengthen Cornerstone Strategy in Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami and New York and Complement oneworld Alliance Relationships

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 20 /PRNewswire/ — American Airlines and American Eagle have strengthened their commitment to Los Angeles with plans to add 10 new destinations – one international and nine domestic – for a total of 33 additional round trips beginning April, 5, 2011.

New destinations from LAX include (total number of daily flights):

    Albuquerque, N.M. (3)
    Boise, Idaho (2)
    El Paso, Texas (2)
    Houston Bush Intercontinental (3)
    Oklahoma City, Okla. (1)
    Phoenix, Ariz. (4)
    Shanghai, China* (1)
    Salt Lake City, Utah (3)
    Sacramento, Calif. (4)
    Tucson, Ariz. (3)

Four of the new routes will be served by American Eagle’s Bombardier CRJ-700 fleet, which now features a First Class cabin. All four existing daily flights to Denver also will be upgraded with the addition of CRJ-700 service.

In addition to Los Angeles-Shanghai, American will offer seven additional daily domestic flights from Los Angeles, including two flights each to Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami and one flight each to Chicago, Las Vegas and Orlando. By spring 2011, American and American Eagle will offer 153 daily departures at LAX – a 28 percent increase from today’s schedule. The airlines also have flexibility to add more flights and destinations in the future.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates our commitment to superior service and travel choices for our customers to and from Los Angeles,” said Virasb Vahidi, American’s Chief Commercial Officer. “Los Angeles has long been an important market for American and American Eagle and is a critical international gateway for us as well as our oneworld® Alliance partners.”

American’s latest network enhancements at LAX will complement the 18 international departures offered by oneworld alliance members at the airport, including to such markets as Auckland, New Zealand; Hong Kong; Lima, Peru; London; Melbourne, Australia; San Salvador, El Salvador; and Tokyo.

With the Los Angeles expansion, American continues to strengthen its “cornerstone” network strategy that focuses more flying to and from the markets of Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth, Los Angeles, Miami and New York. These markets represent top U.S. commerce centers and are significant international gateways, which provide the best connections to American’s global network and the networks of its partner airlines in the oneworld Alliance.

“I would like to thank American Airlines for strengthening their commitment to Los Angeles by bringing more flights into our great City and spurring economic development by investing $20 million into their terminal,” Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa said. “Los Angeles, an international global destination, is proud to partner with American Airlines, a world-class airline, to connect more people and to provide more jobs for hard-working Angelenos.”

American estimates that its expanded service will add approximately $600 million a year in local economic impact, increasing its total annual economic impact in Los Angeles to approximately $6 billion.

American has a rich historical connection to California. On Jan. 25, 1959, American became the first airline to offer coast-to-coast jet service with Boeing 707 flights between Los Angeles and New York’s Idlewild Airport. In 2009, American and American Eagle served more than 9 million customers either traveling to, from or through LAX. The airline continues to grow in the state and, with the additions announced today, American will operate 267 daily nonstop flights to 35 destinations from California, serving cities throughout the United States as well as destinations in the Pacific, Europe, Canada, Mexico and Central America.

Today’s announcement is the latest example of American’s commitment to Los Angeles. Earlier this month, American, British Airways and Iberia announced the official launch of their Joint Business between North America and Europe by introducing a new Los Angeles – Madrid route (operated by Iberia) that will begin service in spring 2011. American will codeshare on that flight, allowing customers to buy a ticket on AA.com and earn AAdvantage® miles on the journey.

Also this month, American received approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to launch service between Los Angeles and Shanghai. The new route will enhance American’s service offering to China when it launches in April 2011, using 247-seat Boeing 777 aircraft which feature 16 First Class, 37 Business Class and 194 Economy Class seats.

Last month American announced new choices for customers between Los Angeles and Mexico through a new codeshare agreement with Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. Pending regulatory approval, later this year American intends to offer customers the ability to purchase tickets on Alaska Airlines or Horizon Air from or through Los Angeles to the following markets: Mexico City**; Guadalajara**; La Paz (operated by Horizon Air); Loreto (operated by Horizon Air); Mazatlan; Puerto Vallarta; Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo and Manzanillo.

Approximately $20 Million in Facility Upgrades Also Planned

Last year, American Eagle opened a new terminal at LAX. As a result of today’s announcement, American Eagle plans to expand the facility by adding four more gates, an investment of approximately $20 million. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of 2011, giving American Eagle 10 gates at LAX. The American Eagle terminal upgrade will complement American’s amenities at Terminal 4, which features 13 gates, expanded curbside check-in with 13 skycap positions, 42 self-service machines, mobile check-in capability, including boarding pass and bag tag issuance, and an Admirals Club with a First Class Flagship Lounge. The airlines offer direct shuttle service between the two terminals.

American Airlines, Fort Worth Airpower Foundation Present Sky Ball Fundraiser for North Texas Military Families

Eighth Annual Gala Supports Families in Need, Pays Tribute to ‘Greatest Generation’ World War II Veterans

Actor Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band to Headline Program

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 18 — American Airlines and the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation (FWAPF) are once again partnering to present the eighth annual Sky Ball fundraiser in support of North Texas military families and to honor service members, veterans and their families.

This year’s patriotic celebration, “A Tribute to the Greatest Generation: Remembering our Veterans from World War II,” will be held Saturday, Oct. 23, at American’s Alliance Airport Maintenance and Engineering Base in Fort Worth. Some 600 American Airlines and American Eagle employee volunteers will support the event, which will include a headline performance by award-winning actor and musician Gary Sinise and the Lt. Dan Band.

“We look forward to this event each year because it provides an opportunity for all of us at American and American Eagle Airlines to support two important long-standing commitments: Paying tribute to the brave men and women who defend our country, and giving back to our community,” said Bob Reding, American’s Executive Vice President – Operations. “The continued success of Sky Ball can be attributed to our dedicated employee volunteers, the generosity of this community, and our great relationship with the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation. We are so glad to be able to provide assistance to the many military families in North Texas that sacrifice so much for our country.”

A gourmet dinner that evening will be the work of renowned Executive Chef Heath Miles, Chef-in-Residence at Texas Motor Speedway, and ONEHOPE wines will provide its Yellow Ribbon Red Zinfandel at the event. ONEHOPE donates 50 percent of profits from Red Zinfandel sales to support our troops. American Airlines will proudly serve this wine inflight in premium cabins on transcontinental and Hawaii flights during November.

The Fort Worth Airpower Foundation is dedicated to supporting North Texas military families, and Sky Ball proceeds help provide financial assistance. Many of these families struggle to meet their financial obligations when their loved ones are called to active duty and, in many cases, for multiple tours overseas. Support comes in many forms, including financial aid for those with a family member who has been deployed; departure and welcome-home receptions; support for welfare and relief projects of the units based in North Texas; and care packages and gifts to soldiers wounded in battle who are recuperating at military hospitals.

“It is important to recognize that, while thousands of North Texans fight for our freedom overseas, many of their families fight to survive at home,” said Mike Snyder, Chairman of the Airpower Foundation and Co-chair of Sky Ball VIII. “American Airlines and the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation understand the importance of supporting these families, and we will continue to assist them as much as possible because they deserve nothing less.”

A number of World War II veterans will be welcomed as special guests, including U.S.S. Indianapolis survivor Cleatus Lebow, Tuskegee airmen Don Elder and Calvin Spann, and Glenn McDuffie, the sailor kissing a nurse in the iconic Life magazine cover photograph taken in Times Square on V-J Day in 1945. Odean “Deanie” Parrish, a courageous Women Airforce Service Pilot (WASP) will also be present at the gala. Photos of American Airlines employees’ family members who served in World War II will be on display throughout the hangar, and a special tribute slide show will be presented in their honor.

Additional celebrity guests appearing at Sky Ball VIII will include singer/songwriter Radney Foster, who will perform his song, “Angel Flight.” A special rendition of “Requiem for a Soldier,” made famous by the World War II HBO miniseries Band of Brothers, will be performed by Broadway star Laurie Gayle Stephenson. Renowned actress Jane Russell will also make a guest appearance at the event, and actor James McEachin will present a brief dramatic vignette, “Fallen Comrade.”

Other features at the gala will include:

A World War II static aircraft display
A portrait presentation by the American Fallen Soldiers Project to the family of a Normandy Beach casualty
The legendary military grog bowl ceremony, a tribute to the nation’s service members and veterans
A special swearing-in ceremony of 20 new recruits to various branches of the military

Another exciting attraction, B-25 bomber flights, will be available for purchase at the event, with all proceeds from the flights donated to History Flight and the Fort Worth Airpower Foundation. History Flight is a nonprofit organization that provides the public the opportunity to fly aboard World War II aircraft, with all proceeds funding History Flight’s recovery expeditions dedicated to bringing home the remains of service men Missing in Action in remote World War II battle sites. American is currently assisting History Flight with the search and recovery of MIA U.S. troops, notably Marines who fought at Tarawa in the Pacific Theater.

All Sky Ball proceeds directly benefit the Navy-Marine Corps, National Guard Relief Fund and families of those stationed at the Naval Air Station Joint Reserve Base in Fort Worth. Last year’s event raised more than $600,000 for families of deployed troops.

Sponsorships and tables can be purchased on the Sky Ball VIII website, www.skyballviii.com.

545 Flight Attendants and 250 Pilots to Be Recalled for Active Duty

FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 6 — American Airlines today announced that it is sending recall notices to 545 flight attendants and 250 pilots. Several factors contributed to the company’s ability to recall, primarily its efforts to capitalize on new international flying and business opportunities with British Airways and Iberia, continuing to strengthen its cornerstone hubs, and preparing for it’s pending alliance with Japan Airlines.

Following today’s news conference in London announcing the official beginning of American’s alliance with British Airways and Iberia, AMR Chairman and CEO Gerard Arpey said: “The company is pleased to be recalling approximately 800 total pilots and flight attendants to help capitalize on our business goals as well as to meet our staffing needs in the coming months. This is exactly the kind of growth we’re hoping to achieve with our network strategy, and my hope is that trends like this will continue.”

The first group of 25 pilots will be recalled in mid-November, and the company will continue to recall at a rate of approximately 30 per month. For flight attendants, recall notices will be sent in phases. The first notices will be issued to approximately 225 flight attendants this month; subsequent notifications will follow later in the year.

“I am very pleased to welcome our furloughed flight attendants back to service,” said Denise Lynn, Vice President – Flight Service. “Each day, our flight attendants play an integral role in providing our customers with a welcoming and positive experience onboard all our flights.”

Captain John Hale – Vice President Flight, added “we are happy to have these pilots back in our cockpits. My hope is that the enhancements we’re making to our network will allow us to extend the same offer to more of our furloughees.”
