What: single-engine Cessna 182 en route to Adelanto Where: Summit Valley Road and Maple Avenue, San Bernardino County When: July 5, 2011, 7:30 pm Who: pilot and passenger Why: The plane lost power while en route and made an emergency landing aiming for a dirt road but ended up hitting a car, and butting up to an empty house. Neither the pilot nor the passenger was admitted to the hospital. the brush fire caused by the crash was brought under control.
What: Rusline/Rusair Tupolev TU-134A en route from Moscow to Petrozavodsk Where: outskirts of the Besovets village, Petrozavodsk, Russia When: Jun 20 2011 at 11:40 pm Who: 43 passengers and 9 crew Why: On approach to the airport, the plane struck the ground about 2600 feet shy of runway 2. On impact, the plane burst into flame, and skidded into the gardens of a residential area, although missing residences.
Eight passengers were retrieved alive from the wreckage, in conditions ranging from severe (6) medium severe (1), critical grave (1). 44 were killed. The injured were ported to Moscow via IL-76 with a full medical team aboard (15 doctors, 5 psychologists.) One crew member survived, Julia Skvortsova, an attendant, is struggling for survival.
The fire was under control by 1 a m on June 21. The investigation has just begun, and is cautioning the local papers not to jump the gun assuming runway lighting failure.
What: First Air Boeing 737-200 en route from Winnipeg,MB to Rankin Inlet,NU Where: Winnipeg When: Feb 18th 2011 Who: not available Why: The plane rejected takeoff on receipt of the left engine’s low power indication.
Maintenance subsequently found ice on the PT2 probe. Disposition of the passengers was not released.
What: Alrosa Mirny Air Tupolev TU-154M en route from Yakutia/Polyarny to Moscow Where: Komi republic, at the Izhma airport When: Sep 7th 2010 Who: 72 passengers, three children, nine crew members Why: Four hours into the flight, the plane suffered an on board power system failure. The plane suffered a complete failure of electrical power resulting in loss of navigation devices, fuel pumps and leaving the pilots with no knowledge of available fuel.
The pilot had to make an emergency immediate landing in the Komi republic, at the Izhma airport. The Izhma airport is normally used for helicopters in military operations, but it is a former 1200 meter airport runway. The plane overran the runway into a wooded area and was substantially damaged.
No passengers were hurt. They disembarked via slide in the forested area. The slide has seen better days. It is either third-hand, or has been used frequently.
The Komi Republic is arranging for transportation of passengers from Izhma to Ukhta (which is the nearest airport) by helicopter. On arrival in Ukhta, passengers will board a replacement flight and continue to Moscow
It appears that the carrier will leave the damaged plane where it sits, as it can not take off.

What an extraordinary feat to that plane safely. Imagine having no knowledge of how much fuel was left, or even if it would be accessible, with nowhere to land but on a helicopter landing strip, without power, with no way to brake. A harrowing ride, and some brilliant snap decisions on the part of the crew.
What: Helicopter en route from Fifth Avenue Terminal Where: San Diego Bay When: August 22, 2010 6:20 p.m Who: Pilot Why: When his helicopter suffered power loss, the helicopter pilot attempted landing on the Coronado Bridge. Persons on the bridge were in fear of a bridge collision, but those on the bridge need not have worried; the helicopter ended up instead in San Diego Bay.
Flotation devices kept the helicopter from sinking, and harbor police rescued the pilot. Rescuers needed every moment as the the pilot canopy was “broken in around him” which I take to mean he was pretty well entrapped. After retrieving the pilot, he was treated at UCSD Medial Center.
What: Hillsboro Aviation Robinson R22 Where: quarter mile south of the Hillsboro Airport, east of the Washington County Fairgrounds When: Jun 19th, 2010 8:40 pm Who: pilot and passenger Why: On approach to the airport, the pilot lost power and attempted an emergency field landing. The helicopter flipped on landing, but the pilot and passenger were unhurt.
What: Chautauqua Airlines Canadair CRJ-200 en route from Boston to Cleveland Where: Cleveland When: Jan 19th 2010 Who: 55 passengers Why: Prior to landing, the jet suffered electrical problems resulting in smoke and a loss of power. The crew managed a safe landing. Passenger debarked on the runway and were bussed to the gate. The plane was taken out of commission for maintenance/observation/repairs.
What: AERONCA 7AC en route to SCAPPOOSE Oregon Where: Sauvie Island Multnomah County Oregon When: Jan 3 2009 Who: KATU TV meteorologist Dave Salesky Why: After losing on approach to Scappoose Airport, the pilot landed in a field on Sauvie Island wildlife refuge. The incident is being termed a forced landing.
What: Beechcraft 35 en route from Portland-Hillsboro Airport to Chico Minicipal Airport Where: 200 feet N of the runway of Chico Airport When: NOV 10, 2009 5:30 pm Who: 2 on board Why: On approach to the Chico airport after refueling in Hillboro, Ore., the plane lost power at the north end of the airport. The right wing dipped and struck the ground, then the plane flipped nose first.
The wife was piloting the plane.
The plane was a total loss; but the couple who is from Seattle, made plans to fly on to AZ.
What: Marion County Sheriff’s helicopter returning from a call in the southwest area of Marion county Where: Ocala Airport When: Saturday 10/10/2009 Who: Sheriff’s Office pilots Peter Rogers and Michael Turner Why: While returning from a call, the helicopter lost power. They managed to land at Ocala airport.

Why: When the helicopter developed mechanical problems and lost power, it crash landed in the Rift Valley. Fuel, flight voice and data recorders have been collected, and the Russian plane builders have been invited to join the investigation.

Air safety in Kenya, especially for government officials, seems to be an oxymoron.
What: small propeller-driven, six-seater Beechcraft BE95 twin-engine plane en route from the Minden-Tahoe Airport (500 yards south of Mottsville Lane, three miles west of State Route 88) Where: western Gardnerville Nevada When: Saturday afternoon about 4:10 p.m. Who: five people aboard: four men and one woman. All died of blunt force trauma. Why: Witnesses say the plane nose-dived into an open field. Witnesses said “The right wing of the plane dropped down and it appeared that the pilot had stalled”

Collier County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Karie Partington said “But it kind of bounced off the runway and into some brush.” Only minor injuries were reported
What: C172 Regis#: 20275 Where: Little Rock Arkansas When: 01/22/2009 Who: Pilot and Passenger Why: The pilot reported a power loss but was able to reach the airport. On landing, however, there was damage when it ran off the runway.
What: single-engine Piper Cherokee registered to Offshore Flight School Inc Where: near White Plains Beach, near Kalaeloa, the former Barbers Point the former Barbers Point, Hawaii When: 11:46 a.m. Who: two women and a man were injured in the crash. The official opinion of the pilot is that she did a good job in not stalling the plane. Why: The pilot reported steering problems shortly after takeoff. The plane was flying practice routes around Kalaeloa and lost power on departure. On attempting an emergency landing, the plane flew through power lines, plunged through trees that broke off the aircraft’s wings and crashed just outside the runway area.

What: F/A-18 Military Jet from the carrier Abraham Lincoln landing at Marine Corps Air Station Miramir Where: San Diego neighborhood When: DEC 8 Who: the pilot, who was part of a training squadron, ejected. He had been aiming the plane at a deserted canyon to avoid homes and the 805 Freeway. 4 Individuals in the house are dead. The pilot has been transported to Balboa Naval Hospital Why: Witnesses said, “It was mushing through the air…iIt was chugging along with what seemed like one engine. Then I heard a roar of engine and all of a sudden, woop, dead silence.”
The deceased have been identified as 4 members of a Korean family. Dong Yun Yoon is the sole survivor–Lost in the crash were Young Mi Yoon, 36; her daughters Grace, 15 months, and Rachel, 2 months; and her mother, Suk Im Kim, 60.
Apparently caused by power failure, the crash is considered unrelated to the previous discovery of cracks in hinges on the wings of more than a dozen F/A-18s ( This writer, however, does wonder if the two problems reveal a maintenance factor in common–though hinge cracks seem that they would be related to parts, wear or broader manufacturing issues.)

Where: Lake Elmo, MN, south of 10th Street North between Inwood Avenue North and Keats Avenue North, north of Interstate 94. When: Wednesday morning 10:30 am Dec 10 Who: 1 pilot and 2 passengers Why: Shortly after takeoff, the Angel Flight experienced engine problems at 3,000 feet. With insufficient power to stay in the air, the plane glided to a landing 1n a soybean field. Another Angel Flight volunteer pilot completed the cancer patient’s flight to medical treatment.
What: small plane en route from Reno, Nev. to El Centro Where: private airstrip in alongside Interstate 15 near Stoddard Wells San Bernardino County When: Monday Who: Pilot not named. Why: Plane lost power at 7,000 feet, The pilot was intending to land at Southern California Logistics Airport but detoured to the private landing strip. The pilot made an emergency without landing gear, slid on the belly of the airplane with no fire, no hazards, no fuel leaks and no injuries
What: Cessna Centurion being used for aerial photography Where: crash/lands in the shallows north of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. When: 2 p.m. Wednesday. Who: Pilot Matt Barcelona of San Jose and passenger Bruce Moody. Why: The pilot reported a loss of power before it crashed. Witnesses reported the plane left a dark trail. After the impact. they managed to get the door open. They waited on the plane’s wing until rescued by Coast Guard vessels conducting training sessions within fifteen minutes of the vicinity; passengers were taken to Yerba Buena Island, then to the hospital.
