    Homebuilt Misses Drag Strip Landing in Hawaii


    What: FP-404 registration# 81633 experimental single-engine biplane
    Where: HILO Hawaii
    When: 01/18/2009 7:10 am
    Who: pilot Thomas Downey, 79
    Why: When the engine failed at 2,500 feet, the pilot force landed on a drag strip, landing outside the perimeter fence. The pilot suffered an injury to his finger. The plane suffered damage to wings and landing gear.

    Homebuilt Crashes in Santa Ynez

    What: single-engine homebuilt plane( S FLUT-R-BUG SA6) en route from Santa Ynez Valley Airport
    Where: Sycamore Valley Ranch in the Santa Ynez Valley in the 6500 block of Figueroa Mountain Road.
    When: Between 2 and 2:30 pm.
    Why: The pilot had to land because of engine trouble. After landing, he worked on his plane, and took off again to fly the 10 miles to the airport, but the engine quit again and the plane crashed into some oak trees. The pilot sustained a scratch on his head but the plane is considered “substantial”

    Home built Crashes, Kills Pilot

    What: “experimental high wing” or home-built single-engine plane registered to William McDuffie of Louisiana
    Where: East Texas near a landfill between Longview and Kilgore.
    When: Discovered Monday afternoon
    Who: Ronald Vickers of Arlington died in the crash. Death was pronounced on the scene.
    Why: Prior to crashing, the plane made contact with the power lines. The right wing susustained damage. Ronald Vickers was about halfway through the 350 mile trip from Oak Ridge, La to taking his newly purchased plane home to Texas. It is not known why he was flying low.

    Homebuilt Crashes in Orange Grove

    What: homebuilt Long-EZ aircraft en route from Leesburg to Fort Myers
    Where: Hardee County orange grove
    When: December 7, 2008
    Who: pilot Gary Smith
    Why: Smith had engine trouble; and tried to land in an open field but clipped power lines, flipped and came down about 80 feet from the road. Smith was trapped in his plane until found by utility workers from Peace River Electric Cooperative investigating a power outage found him. Smith is in stable condition and hospitalized Florida Hospital in Wauchula

    Australia Kit Crash update

    What: kit-built Thorpe-T18 engaged in a biennial flight review
    Where: south of Perth
    When: Thursday last week.
    Who: pilot Fred Murray and pilot examiner Allan Hayes, both fatalities
    Why: The plane crashed after it clipped trees about a kilometre from the Serpentine airfield.

    The pilot Mr Murray spent 20 years working with Aboriginal people and will be missed.

    Homebuilt Crashes Doing Aerobic Stunts in Australia Killing Two

    What: Thorpe T-18
    Where: Hopeland, south of Perth at Serpentine Airstrip
    When: November 27, 2008
    Who: Two men, both middle-aged and thought to be in their 50s were reported to have been killed in the crash
    Why: The plane had been engaged in ”aerobatic manoeuvres” the pilot possibly conducting a biennial flight review (BFR) with a more junior pilot. The plane inverted and then nose-dived into the ground

    Kit Plane Crash Kills Sprint Car Driver


    What: two-seater kit-built aircraft known as a VANS RV7 en route from from Darwin to Jindare Station
    Where: Jindare Station airstrip about 40 kilometres south-west of Pine Creek
    When: 1:30pm
    Who: Territory sprintcar driver Mark Grosvenor was one of two people killed in the crash
    Why: Under investigation

    Homebuilt Crash and Fatality in Virginia


    What: Private homebuilt kit plane that resembled a Cessna.
    Where: Covington Field in Spencer on a private air strip in Henry County just west of Blue Ridge Airport, near Virginia 58 and the Patrick County line.
    When: Friday afternoon 2:30 p.m
    Who: Pilot Jerome Tuttle, 71, of Stoneville, N.C. was taken to the Martinsville Hospital and died of his injuries.
    Why: The pilot was attempting to land on the private air strip when the plane crashed.

    Homebuilt Crashes in Utah


    What: Blue and white homebuilt plane (described as a small homemade plane with a tube-like frame, cloth covering and a small fiberglass cockpit) en route from the Salt Lake County area.
    Where: Crashed into side of the Oquirrh Mountains near West Canyon a few miles north of Cedar Fort, a small town west of Eagle Mountain and Saratoga Springs off state Route 73.
    When: Around 11:00 a.m. 10-28-2008
    Who: pilot and passenger, both fatalities.
    Why: The crash was witnessed by several onlookers who said the engine died, and the plane began dropping in a spin. and the pilot couldn’t pull the plane’s nose up. (Some witnesses said the plane was doing aerobic stunts; others described a loss of control. The wreckage was on fire when officials arrived. Officers and investigators from Saratoga Springs, Cedar Fort and Eagle Mountain fire departments, Utah County Fire, Utah County Sheriff’s Office, and the state medical examiner were on scene Tuesday.
