    Delta Diverts Orioles to Jacksonville

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 737-800,en route from Baltimore to Saint Petersburg
    Where: Jacksonville
    When: Sep 30th 2012
    Who: Baltimore Orioles
    Why: Smoke was reported aboard the Baltimore Orioles flight from Baltimore to Tampa for a Monday game.

    Ned Rice, of Orioles operations said that “They came on and told us we needed to make an emergency landing, and then we were nearly free-falling for a few minutes as they raced to get us on the ground as fast as possible.”

    The smoke originated in the galley.

    The pilots diverted to Jackson and made a safe landing, where the plane was inspected and cleared before continuing to St. Pete.

    Delta Galley Fire

    What: Delta Airlines Boeing 747-400 en route from New York to Tel Aviv
    Where: New York
    When: Dec 11th 2010
    Who: 399 aboard
    Why: After takeoff from JFK, the crew reported a fire in galley 2. While burning off fuel to land, the fire went out; but additional problems with fuel pumps were reported. The flight dumped fuel and landed an hour and a half after departure.

    There was also a degree of interference with messaging between the plane and ATC caused by bleedover from a commercial station but not enough to cause problems.

    Turkey: Galley Smokes Cabin

    What: Azerbaijan Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Istanbul Turkey to Baku Azerbaijan
    Where: Istanbul
    When: October 30
    Who: 221 aboard
    Why: After takeoff, the cabin filled with smoke coming from a galley oven.

    The plane returned to the Istanbul airport and made a safe landing. No replacement was provided. The plane received maintenance, and continued some hours later.
