Jeremy Gutsche was on his way from London to Singapore on November 12 when he decided to use in-flight Wi-Fi to check emails.

“So what does it take to rack up $1200 of internet use? In my case, just 155 page views, mostly to my email… At one point, I spent about an hour uploading one 4mb powerpoint doc. That doc probably cost me $100 to upload, so I hope my team liked it. I actually even emailed them a warning that my upload was taking a while. That email probably cost me $10. And yes, the pricing per mb was disclosed on sign-up, but I bought the $30 package, slept through most the flight, and really didn’t think I’d end up a thousand bucks past the limit,” he wrote on Trend Hunter.

The post Singapore Airlines Passenger Receives $1200 Bill for In-flight Wi-Fi first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.

A Singapore Airlines Airbus A380 en route from London to Singapore diverted to Baku in the first week of January 2013, after developing pressurization problems. The plane made a safe landing with no injuries.

Four hundred sixty seven passengers were aboard the flight, and twenty-seven crew, none of whom were injured. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations pending a replacement aircraft from Singapore.

A faulty door seal was reported to be the cause of the incident. The sound of the leaking air was audible and the flow of air was cold, an beyond the plane’s ability to manage. A replacement door was fitted before the plane flew out. Airbus is participating in the investigation by sending a team to Baku.

Singapore airlines operates 19 A380’s.

The Singapore Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Singapore Dhaka with 105 passengers and 12 crew aboard diverted to Bangkok when they got an internal flight warning. There were no injuries.

In spite of the cargo fire suppression system, there was a burning smell and a fire.

The plane made a safe landing in Bangkok. The plane taxied to the gate, and passengers disembarked and were provided hotel accommodations, meals and transferred to another airline.

An investigation is underway.

Singapore Airlines’ spokesman, Nicholas Ionides said that “Flight SQ446 operating between Singapore and Dhaka diverted to Bangkok as a result of indications of smoke from the aircraft’s rear cargo hold.”

When Thai authorities clear the Airbus, it will be flown back to Singapore.

In George’s Point of View

It has been well documented that Airbus and Boeing are taking different paths regarding their approach on batteries.

But still, it is one of my least favorite things to read (especially while I’m halfway to Singapore) that there has been yet another cargo fire at all, regardless of what kind of plane it is on.

At least I had time to jot down some thoughts.

I hope that the media shines as bright a light on this airbus cargo fire as it has recently on the Dreamliner battery situation. Sure, the Dreamliner is developing new technology and Boeing is responsible for going the distance to keep new developments safe. The Dreamliner battery issue is new. But the fact that Boeing is developing new technologies and new solutions does not provide Airbus and an established plane like a A330-300 a free ticket when it comes to combustion.

Hopefully Airbus is paying attention to all problems and not getting too cocky. It should remember and respect that a plane is still an air-filled bubble hundreds of feet in the air. Until people develop their own wings, random combustion situations like cargo fires on an Airbus A330 are just as potentially hazardous situation–if not more so–than any battery incident that actually occurred on the ground.

Let us please see a fix for this problem.

The post Singapore Airlines Emergency Landing first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.

Cracks have been found on Airbus A380 wings by Singapore Airlines and Qantas.

The cracks occurred on the wing ribs of their Airbus A380s. Qantas discovered the problem while repairing a Royce Trent 900 engines blowout in 2010.

Airbus says they know the origin and have developed an inspection and repair procedure for scheduled four-year maintenance checks.

The problem has been found on at least five planes.

The Australian Licensed Aircraft Engineers Association says Airbus A380s should be grounded, that flying with them is gambling with people’s lives, that it is risky to wait for a 4 year maintenance check. Airbus counters that the cracks are “on non-critical wing attachments” and pose no threat.

The post Airbus A380 Wings Subject to Cracking first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.
