The flight 656 was on its way from Toronto to Varadero, Cuba, when “two unruly female passengers” caused disturbance in the flight. According to Janine Chapman, vice-president of marketing for Sunwing, “It is reported that the passengers consumed a significant quantity of their duty free alcohol purchase in the lavatory and lit a cigarette, triggering the smoke detector alarm…These passengers proceeded to get into a physical altercation with each other and made a threat against the aircraft, which was considered non-credible given their condition.”

The pilot reported the situation to the North American Aerospace Defence Command (NORAD) which then sent 2 Canadian Forces CF-18 fighters from CFB Bagotville, Quebec, to escort the flight back to Pearson airport. Chapman said, “Our flight crew followed the appropriate procedures and the aircraft was diverted back to Toronto where it has now landed.”

The two passengers were arrested by the police. They are facing charges of smoking on board an aircraft, endangering safety of an aircraft, mischief endangering safety, and uttering threats.

The flight was preparing to take off for Cuba late night on Wednesday.

The post Two Unruly Passengers Forced Sunwing Flight to Return to Toronto first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.

A Puerto Vallarta, Mexico-bound Sunwing Boeing 737-800 en route from Edmonton,Alberta Canada, diverted and made an emergency landing on Sunday March 16, 2014 in Helena Montana after flying through ninety seconds of turbulence.

Two of the six person crew sustained injuries, but none of the 181 passengers were seriously injured, perhaps because the seatbelt lights were on.

Passengers waited hours on the airstrip before a customs agent finally arrived and attended to them. The replacement jet did not arrive for eleven hours.

According to Ron Mercer, Director Helena Regional Airport, the airport has only one customs agent who was not there on Sunday. Another customs agent was called and arrived after a 1.5 hour drive from Great Falls. The airport does not usually host commercial international flights and the customs agent had to “do his homework” and consult international rules before passengers could exit the aircraft.

The situation called for modification in the US customs and immigration department’s emergency protocols, for easing up procedures for those passengers already traumatized due to an emergency situation.

The unexpected delay will no doubt result in consequences because, as CBC News says major Canadian airlines tariff says if “…your flight is delayed more than 90 minutes, you may have the right to get off the plane.”

You can rest assured that after these passengers spent five hours in the plane, someone is going to be paying a hefty fine.

Re: Preliminary findings regarding the Sunwing Flight 326 at 6:32 from Ottawa to Varadero with 170 passengers

The smoke passengers saw coming from the air vents of the Boeing 737 was vapor from excess de-icing fluid. The smell described by the passengers was similar to engine coolant. Oxygen masks did not deploy.

The pilot returned to the runway at 7:00 a.m. No smoke or fire was found (obviously) because the vapor was not smoke at all, but evaporating coolant that had gotten into the plane via a vent.

The investigation is ongoing.

The post First findings: Sunwing Diversion Due to Fumes not fire first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.

On March 11, 2013, an Air Canada Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Edmonton to Toronto,ON was on approach when ATC informed the pilots to abort the landing. Ground radar indicated something moving on the runway. Pilots continued to make the landing, and ignored ATC.

Mechanics working on a Sunwing Boeing had left a van running and in gear, which subsequently rolled without a driver across the runway. At some point, the van impacted the Sunwing 737.

In George’s Point of View

While we can’t make assumptions, apparently the pilots saw the van safely flew over it and made a secure landing.

However, there are a lot of errors here that could have been disaster. We are glad no one was injured. Safety first, everyone!

The maintenance crew for failing to secure their vehicle.

ATC for not using the call sign, even if it was evident to them who they were speaking to.

Pilots for ignoring ATC even if they saw the “threat” because there could have been an additional alert

That said, of course we are glad no one was injured.

After unruly behavior on a Sunwing Airlines flight from Halifax Canada to the Dominican Republic, a family was arrested, and appeared in Bermuda court Monday.

Sunwing may bring charges against the family for the cost of diverting the plane. ($50,000) The plane was examined in Bermuda after landing and continued to the Dominican Republic a day late. Sunwing is banning the family from every flying their airline again.

The son allegedly smoked in the bathroom, then a disagreement between his family and flight attendants ensued. Pilots landed in Bermuda and the family was arrested.

David McNeil Jr denied smoking on the plane and the charge was dropped, but the father, David McNeil Sr. pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct and the mother, Donna McNeil pleaded guilty to disobeying a lawful order from a flight attendant. The parents were sentenced to either a $500 fine or 10 days in prison. The son was free to go.
