Where: Salzburg
When: Oct 8th 2009
Who: 37 passengers and 4 crew
Why: While en route to Geneva, the plane’s left engine experienced a drop in oil pressure. The flight diverted to Salzburg, where the passengers debarked. The passengers were provided hotel accommodations; and the plane went to maintenance, presumably to resume the flight on the 9th.

*note– We believe that the reports that the ENGINE ON THIS FLIGHT FELL OFF–are highly exaggerated. In fact, we think there’s a simple mistranslation somewhere, since the routine response for an oil pressure problem on a plane with more than one engine frequently involves turning an engine off (as opposed to it falling off.)

Why: When the left hand engine’s oil pressure dropped, the pilot shut down the engine and continued on to Kagoshima. Maintenance crews discovered significant damage in the engine. There were no injuries reported.

This was also reported as a Bombardier Inc. DHC-8-Q400. The Bombardier Dash 8 was formerly known as the de Havilland Canada Dash 8; Bombardier acquired de Havilland Canada (DHC) .

The post Japan Air Commuter Lands on One Engine first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.

What: 1930s single-engine de Havilland Tiger Moth
Where: East Windsor, Conn
When: Saturday August 30
Who: pilot and passenger
Why: The plane lost power 200 feet from the runway at the Skylark Airpark Saturday. The pilot and passenger crashed in treetops and were stuck in the tree until help arrived. A tree surgeon climbed the tree, and set up a pulley to rescue the pilot and passenger who were apparently unhurt. The pilot was an instructor who “maintained an airspeed where he was in control and buffeted [the plane] into the top of the trees. That’s what saved both their lives.”

The post Connecticut Pilot Treed first appeared on George Hatcher's Air Flight Disaster.
