The pilot decided to land on the freeway after the plane suffered an engine failure.

The plane landed safely. There were two people aboard at the time, including the pilot Izzy Slod, 25, and a passenger; both remained unharmed.

The plane was returning to Van Nuys after a trip to San Diego.

The Arion Lightning plane went down shortly after it took off from Van Nuys Airport.

The pilot, who was the only one aboard, was killed in the crash. He was identified as 78-year-old Arthur Miles Newman, of Malibu.

Authorities said the pilot was practicing touch-and-go landing at the time of crash.

The authorities confirmed that the plane, which departed minutes earlier from Van Nuys Airport, crashed at Vanowen Street and Hayvenhurst Avenue.

The pilot of the plane, who was the only person aboard, was killed in the crash. He was later identified as 47-year-old Alberto Behar, who was a NASA and Jet Propulsion Labs researcher and an Arizona State University Professor.

No one on ground was injured.

The NTSB, FAA and APD are investigating.
