Wings Abadi flight IW-1896 veered off the runway at Achmad Yani International Airport, Semarang, Central Java, Indonesia, on December 25th.

The Avions de Transport Regional ATR-72-212A flying from Bandung landed safely on the runway but veered off and came to a stop with its right main gear collapsed.

The aircraft received substantial damage.

No injuries were reported.

Two tour groups, Xiamen Airlines International Travel Service Co. and the Xiamen Tourism Group International Travel Service Co. from mainland China (from Xiamen) were aboard. The plane was less than a year old with only 684 flight hours and powered by Pratt & Whitney PW100-127M engines.

A search helicopter, a hovercraft, 9 ambulances, 10 fire trucks, and police divers in wet suits are among those who responded to the scene. Rescue efforts are underway, with plans to lift the fuselage by crane in an attempt to rescue survivors trapped inside. Underwater visibility in this very polluted river is very limited, according to divers.

The passengers remained in Abuja awaiting a replacement plane.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) is investigating.

The MFSTD, or VPT as named by ATR, configured as the 42/72, is a crew training device enabling systems and procedure training. The MFSTD’s will come with touch screens for an easy navigation on all panels, controls, indicators and displays within the flight deck. The ordered MFSTD’s include innovative features such as active systems schematics and 3D interface for key systems. ATR trainees will experience high level fidelity and familiarize themselves with the aircraft cockpit environment, thus optimizing FFS training time.
