Norway: Widerøes Hard Landing

What: Widerøes Flyveselskap de Havilland Canada DHC-8-103B en route from Bodø Airport to Sandnessjøen-Stokka Airport
Where: Sandnessjøen Norway
When: Sept 15 2010 6:00
Who: 3 crew, 4 passengers, no fatalities
Why: The pilot did not inform ATC of any problems before landing. However, the plane had a hard landing due to a wind gust, a drizzle and moist conditions. The impact apparently damaged the plane’s undercarriage, and the plane skidded on its belly. The runway was foamed by Airport Fire and Rescue Services to prevent fire. There were no injuries reported.

The plane apparently is designed to perform exactly as it did under these circumstances. The undercarriage is apparently supposed to collapse in a hard landing.

Accident Investigation Board has sent three investigators. The airport is now closed.

    British Airways Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

    British Airways flight BA-438 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 14th.

    The Airbus A321-200 plane flying from Heathrow Airport, England, was on final approach to Amsterdam when the crew reported a nose gear steering issue and went around.

    The plane subsequently landed uneventfully and was towed to the apron.

    Lightning Strikes British Airways Airbus in Norway

    britishairwaysA British Airways flight BA-760 made a safe landing at Bergen Airport, Bergen, Norway, on November 13.

    The Airbus A319-100, en-route from London to Bergen, was struck by lightning shortly before landing.

    All passengers aboard remained unharmed.

    • What: Myanmar Airways Fokker F-28 Fellowship 4000 en route from Yangon-Mingaladon Airport to Sittwe-Civil Airport in Myanmar
    Where: Myanmar
    When: 06 JUN 2009 08:20
    Who: Three people were injured on landing.
    Why: While landing, the landing gear and one wing of the jet were damaged. Details of the landing are not yet available, but if we get sent another update, we will update this post.

    Really, a plane of this advanced age should carry a cane, or be carted out to the runway in a wheelchair. We don’t have the details of the landing, the weather, or the craft, but It’s no wonder the landing gear gave out.

    Skywest Plane makes Emergency Landing in Kansas

    Skywest Airlines flight OO-3623/ DL-3623 made an emergency landing at Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, Kansas, on July 15th.

    The Canadair CRJ-200 en route to Minnesota was climbing out when the crew declared an emergency after losing the hydraulic fluid in its landing gear.

    The plane landed safely.

    All 43 people aboard remained unhurt.

    Pitot Diverts Dash 8 to Bergan

    What: Wideroe de Havilland Dash 8-100 en route from Sogndal to Forde
    Where: Bergen
    When: Mar 2nd 2010
    Who: 16 passengers and 3 crew
    Why: While on route, the pitot heating system failed. The resulting nreliable airspeed indications convinced the crew to divert to Bergen, where they made a safe landing.

    Offhand, I think this may be the first that I recall pitot tube issues on a de Havilland Dash 8-100. I wonder if these were thales tubes; and I wonder if airspeed can not be better determined with a more robust methodology. If I were a manufacturer, I would certainly have my engineers thinking about developing alternative technologies to bring to market.

    Refuel Stop Crash in Warsaw Indiana


    On 27-JAN-2013, a Mooney M20J/201 en route from Ohio to Michigan made a crash landing at Warsaw Municipal Airport in Indiana when it bounced in crosswinds, crossed a runway and crashed barriers.

    Pilot Thomas Kowalczk and his son Brian Kowalczk had gotten parts in Port Clinton, Michigan and Lapier, Michigan and had stopped in Warsaw to refuel.

    The plane came to rest over the controls of underground fuel tanks. No fire occurred but the plane sustained significant damage.
