What’s Your Favorite US Military X-Plane Program?

The US military has developed several futuristic aircraft over the decades, some of which never made it into production, but others have set impressive records. From the Bell X-1 Rocket engine-powered aircraft to the Grumman X-29 forward-swept wing experimental aircraft, a few look like something out of science fiction. For example, the McDonnell Douglas X-36 Tailless Fighter Agility Research Aircraft would have made a good spaceship in a sci-fi movie but never achieved its aim of becoming the fighter jet of the future. 

Experimentation is vital to developing new technologies that last beyond the program. Something important is gained from all of these X-planes, even the ones that never really make it past the prototype.
