A quiet day in a Virginia neighborhood was disrupted by the sonic boom of an F-16 fighter jet moving to intercept a small plane that violated Washington DC airspace.

Airport officials said the plane was flying at 27,000 feet when the aircraft lost its left winglet and part of the wing.

The sonic boom rattled the D.C. region as fighter jets scrambled to track an unresponsive private plane in D.C.’s no-fly zone. News4’s Mauricio Casillas reports.

The pilot of Cessna 560 Citation V remained unresponsive throughout attempts to establish contact before it crashed.

Officials attempted to establish contact with the pilot of the unresponsive plane, but they were unresponsive.
