I just wanted to inform you that the safety of passengers is being put at risk at the Burgas airport as there is insufficient or none existent bird prevention teams on the airport grounds. We all know that in the other European countries including the UK we use gun shots, bird sirens or even other birds like hawks to scare birds away from an airport, but looking at the number of reported incidents at this airport alone, you can clearly see that they do not impose any counter measures and this is alarming.

Only on the 5th September the Mirror reported a bird strike where the under carriage caught fire, and then our plane was hit on the 16th by 2 flocks of birds as the captain just missed the 1st flock but was not able to avoid the other 2. They hit the cock pit window and you clearly saw the mess from the outside once the bus drove round the front of the plane which caused the plane to abort the take off after reaching the speeds to take off. The crew told us that the pilot had to abort as he could not see outside the window as it was covered in feathers. He broke sharply and put the engines into reverse and we had approximately only 100m of runway left before the plane went into the soil/sea. The plane was abandoned right at the end of the airport not far from where we stopped. Once we were told to abandon the plane, we saw that the tyre had a blow out and the alloy wheel was bent (which you can’t see in the pictures) from the sudden braking. Other passengers reported that parts of the birds flew into the right hand side of the plane’s engine but I am not sure of this. The passengers at the rear of the plane stated that they were thrown into the air as the plane lifted at the back end as the plane nose dived into the ground as the plane was doing the emergency stop. Most of the life vests under the seats and any luggage people had in the cabins and under the seats were all thrown forward.

I was reluctant and worried to use the same plane if they managed to repair it, but I had a feeling that they wouldn’t be able to repair it as they would need to examine the engines, the cockpit, the wings, repair the wheel etc and this would take too long, so they sent an empty plane from Budapest to pick us up. We received a free ham and cheese roll and a bottle of water whilst waiting in the airport terminal for the new plane. We then went to Budapest so the crew could change over and then we finally arrived in Luton at around 7.40pm instead of arriving to Luton at 1pm.

It would be nice if you could at least print this story online so people are made aware of this and if someone could speak to the airport standards agency that the Bulgarians need to take this seriously and address this problem as the next incident maybe fatalities.
