Netherlands Helicopter Crash at Sea

On May 8, 2013, Cessna 172P was on a photo flight over the North Sea when it crashed at sea in foggy weather near the town of Egmond, Netherlands. Around 9:00 pm, the pilot had sent a distress signal.

A military helicopter and an offshore helicopter responded to the alarm. There was dense fog with visibility of 50 meters.

The pilot and passenger were rescued from water at 10 degrees Celsius. The pilot is a 71-year-old man from the North Holland Sint Maartensvlotbrug, and was unconscious when he was picked up and transported to hospital in Den Helder. The pilot later died of hypothermia.

The 48 year old passenger was picked up from Bussum by boat and admitted to an Amsterdam hospital.
