Durban Emergency Landing

What: One Time McDonnell Douglas MD-87 en route from Durban to Cape Town
Where: Durban
When: Jun 23rd 2010
Why: After takeoff, the landing gear did not retract, according to the cockpit indicators. The pilot did a flyby to confirm, and the plane returned safely to King Shaka International Airport. Passengers took alternative flights. The MD-87 was flown to Johannesburg for maintenance and repairs.

Ethiopia Flight Makes Cautionary Landing

What: Ethiopian airplane Boeing 737-800 Flight 407 en route from Addis Ababa to Beirut
Where: Beirut International Airport
When: June 17 2010
Who: 78 passengers
Why: The flight returned to the airport because of an “undisclosed technical problem.” Crew noticed a door was rattling and had been closed improperly. (It is unclear if that was the technical problem.) The flight made a safe landing. The same plane was cleared for takeoff six hours later.

Jet Blue Airbus Diverts to Nassau

What: JetBlue Airbus 320 en route from Fort Lauderdale, Florida to San Juan, Puerto Rico
Where: Nassau
When: June 16th, 2010
Why: While en route the crew smelled fumes in the cabin. They diverted to Nassau, the Bahamas where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was called for the stranded passengers which was scheduled to take off before 6:00 pm.

An investigation has been launched to determine the source of the smoke.

Delta Emergency Landing in Lexington

What: Delta Flight 5684 Atlanta to Cincinnati
Where: Blue Grass Airport
When: Jun 15, 2010
Who: 77 passengers and crew aboard
Why: While en route, the flight encountered severe turbulence. The flight diverted to Lexington where it made a safe landing at the Blue Grass Airport. The flight continued at 8:20 with no further hinderance.

Hot Delta Flight Lands Safely

What: Delta Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York to Rome
Where: Halifax
When: Jun 10 2010
Who: 214 aboard
Why: While en route over the Atlantic, smoke was found on board. The flight diverted to Halifax where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided. There’s no indication (yet) as to the cause of the smoke.

Cautionary Landing in Dammam

What: Saudi Arabian Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Dammam to Kochi
Where: Muscat
When: Jun 7th 2010
Why: After developing instrument problems while en route, the crew turned around and returned to Dammam where they made a safe landing two hours into the flight. The plane underwent repairs before resuming the flight.

Royal Air Maroc Loses Bird Encounter

What: Royal Air Maroc Boeing 737-400 en route from Amsterdam to Nador
Where: Amsterdam
When: Jun 6th 2010
Who: 156 passengers and 6 crew
Why: On takeoff, the plane encountered a flock of geese, which resulted in an engine fire, damage to the left engine fan blade and denting the inlet. The engine was shut down, fire suppression engaged, and the crew returned to the airport where they made a safe landing. Passengers disembarked on the runway after less than a twenty minute flight.

What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas DC-9-50 en route from Minneapolis to Saint Louis
Where: Minneapolis
When: Jun 7th 2010
Why: After takeoff, the crew had a technical problem, was alerted to landing gear doors open, and made a flyby to visually determine the doors were open. The plane landed safely No mention if the initial technical problem was the open doors or some other matter.

What: Air India Airbus A320-200 en route from Kozhikode to Dubai (or from Calicut to Sharjah depending on who you ask.)
Where: Mumbai
When: May 28th 2010
Who: 84 passengers and 8 crew
Why: While en route, the flight developed hydraulic failure and had to divert to Mumbai where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided, for which passengers waited for three and a half hours. The diversion is considered cautionary and not “emergency.”

When: Jun 2nd 2010
Why: While en route, the flight experienced problems with their standby battery recharging system. (The battery is essential to standby power in an emergency situation. ) The flight diverted to Gander where it made a safe overweight landing. A replacement jet was provided.

Why: After takeoff, smoke was seen coming from the plane’s engine, and the crew observed irregular indications. The flight returned to Honolulu for maintenance. A replacement jet was provided.

Where: Calgary
When: Jan 10th 2008
Who: 83 passengers and 5 crew
Why: Over Washington state, the Airbus which was following a UA Boeing at at least the minimum approved distance was subjected to an interim of wake turbulence which seriously injured 3 and caused minor injuries to 8. Findings on this 2008 event included the cause as wake turbulence. The event brings to question trolley and storage security and rudder control input.

Why: While en route, the flight developed oil pressure problems due to an oil leak and diverted to Wichita Kansas where it made a safe landing. A replacement flight was provided for the passengers.

Why: After a normal takeoff, the crew was advised to return due to debris on the runway. After a flyby during which tire damage was observed, the Spicejet flight made a safe landing. Repairs were made and the flight took off again four hours later. No indication is made of passenger accommodation.

Where: Kastrup Airport, Copenhagen
When: May 18th 2010
Who: 63 passengers and 4 crew
Why: After takeoff, the plane lost a nose wheel when a wheel fell off after an axle broke. The plane returned to land at Kastrup. The landing was safe, and the passengers were rebooked on a subsequent flight.

False Alarm in Travel Service Boeing, Sharm el Sheikh

What: Travel Service Boeing 737-800 en route from Sharm el Sheikh Egypt to Prague
Where: Cairo
When: May 17th 2010
Who: 160 passengers
Why: While en route, the flight crew found indication of a wheel well fire and diverted to Prague. The flight landed safely, and the indication proved to be groundless, causing only a minor delay at the airport.

What: United Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from New York to Los Angeles
Where: Washington
When: May 16th 2010
Who: 105 passengers and 7 crew
Why: While en route, the crew discovered a fire in the cockpit in the power wires to the windshield heaters. The crew put out the flames, and diverted to Dulles where they made a safe landing. No mention of how the passengers were handled; but this is a known problem with the windshield heaters.

Delta Engine Leak Prefaces Cautionary Landing in Nova Scotia

Where: 150nm north of Halifax,NS
When: May 13th 2010
Why: While en route, the plane developed oil pressure problems and had to shut down an engine. They diverted to Halifax and made a cautionary landing.

Delta provided a replacement plane for the passengers within a few hours.

Aer Lingus Cautionary Landing in Dublin

Where: Orlando
When: Dublin
Who: 245 passengers and 11 crew
Why: Just after takeoff, the left engine of the Airbus had a large oil loss and was subsequently shut down. The flight returned to the airport half an hour later and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations and booked on alternative flights the next day.

Where: Ciudad Victoria
When: May 13th 2010
Who: 31 passengers
Why: The Aeromexico Connect had a fire alert in a cargo compartment. They diverted to Ciudad Victoria where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was flown in the next day. Also, the fire alert appeared to be a groundless indicator error; no fire was found.

Singapore Airlines “big badda bang” causes Cautionary Landing in Indonesia

What: Singapore Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Adelaideto Singapore
Where: Denpasar Indonesia
When: May 10th 2010
Why: While en route, the engine made a banging noise. The pilot shut down the affected engine, and tge flight immediately diverted to Denpasar where they made a safe landing.

No mention is made of how (or whether) the passengers got where they were going, nor of what exactly happened to the plane. (Does a plane make a banging noise when it blows a gasket?)

Nepal: Stranded Passengers to the Rescue

What: Agni Air Dornier Do-228 en route from Pokhara to Kathmandu Nepal
Where: Pokhara
When: May 11th 2010
Who: 16 passengers and 2 crew
Why: After takeoff, the crew detected a hydraulic leak and turned around to make an immediate (less than ten minutes later) landing.

Apparently passengers disembarked and helped the crew push the plane off the runway.
