What: Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Brussels to Dakar
Where: Brussels
When: Aug 25th 2010
Why: While en route, the flight developed a hydraulic problem reflected by an unsafe gear alert. The crew returned to Brussels where they made a safe landing. After repairs, the flight resumed, with a delay of about four hours.

What: Polet Aviakompania Antonov AN-124-100 en route from Goose Bay, Newfoundland, Canada to Frankfurt-Hahn Germany
Where: North Atlantic
When: August 14, 2010
Who: 6 member crew
Why: 1,000km northwest of Ireland, the Antonov (world’s largest serially built cargo aircraft) developed oil pressure problems in one engine and had to shut it down. The pilots diverted to Shannon which took two hours to reach, and they made a safe landing on a 3.2km runway. No injuries reported.

Beckham Flight Returns to London

What: British Airways Boeing 747-400 en route from London to Los Angeles
Where: over Scotland
When: Aug 7th 2010
Why: While en route, the British Airways plane developed a problem with the fuel system, dumped the fuel while at sea and returned to Heathrow. No injuries. Safe landing.

The event has received significant coverage, chiefly because Victoria Beckham was aboard the flight, and managed a wardrobe change–and photos of both outfits have been published online.

Smoke Break leads to Albuquerque

What: American Airlines Boeing 767-200 from New York to Los Angeles
Where: Albuquerque
When: August 4, 2010
Who: 168 passengers and 11 crew (or 158 passengers and 11 crew)
Why: The story behind this one is two-fold. One source says the plane diverted to Albuquerque because of smoke in the cockpit. No smoke, no cause of smoke, no evidence thereof was found.

Another source says an unruly passenger was behind the diversion. This person was detained by the FBI on landing, after which the plane was inspected for explosives. During the search, passengers hung around the tarmac for three hours.

This man is being questioned about the odor like cigarettes that was discovered in the bathroom, along with some used matches. Another report says he lit matches in the cabin and then hid in the bathroom.

The plane left Albuquerque for LA around midnight.

When: Aug 2nd 2010
Who: 215 passengers
Why: After take off, the pilot detected a vibration in the left engine and returned to the airport to make a safe landing. The origin of the engine vibration may be the bird strike that occurred on July 30.

Swiss Airbus with Wonky Electrics Diverts to Shannon

What: Swiss Airbus A340-300 en route from Miami to Zurich
Where: Atlantic Ocean
When: Jul 30th 2010
Who: 227 passengers
Why: Three/fourths of an hour out of Shannon, the flight developed various electrical problems with the circuit breakers affecting cabin lighting and the inflight entertainment system. With cabin lighting off, they diverted to Shannon, where the flight made a safe landing.

Passengers were provided alternative flights, albeit not on several different planes.

Manchester: Flybe “Precautionary” Landing

What: Flybe de Havilland Dash 8-400 en route from Manchester to Bournemouth
Where: Manchester
When: Jul 25 2010
Who: 40 passengers
Why: While en route, the pilot announced to the passengers they were undergoing a technical problem. That problem worsened, and eventually necessitated shutting down one engine and returning to Manchester. Passengers were provided a flight to Southampton, and a bus to Bournemouth.

American Airlines Emergency Landing

What: American Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-83 en route from Kansas City to Chicago
Where: Moline,IL
When: Jul 24th 2010
Who: 71 people on board
Why: While en route, passengers detected smoke in the cabin. The pilots diverted to Moline where they made a safe landing.

Who: 198 passengers
Why: While en route, the crew smelled smoke in the cockpit. The pilots diverted the plane to Shannon, where they made a safe landing.

Passengers were provided accommodations, and the plane underwent inspection.

When: Jul 20th 2010
Who: 101 passengers
Why: While en route at an altitude of 36000 feet, the plane developed a crack in the right windshield and diverted to Bahrain. They made a safe landing at 9:43 pm. Passengers are expecting at least a 24 hour delay.

China Southern 737 Loses Air Pressure

What: China Southern Boeing 737-300 en route from Kunming to Zhengzhou
Where: en route
When: Jul 17th 2010
Who: 130 passengers
Why: After takeoff and reaching cruise level, cabin pressure was lost. Oxygen masks were deployed, and the flight returned to Kunming where it made a safe landing. Twenty passengers were hospitalized with ear pain.

A replacement flight was provided six hours later.

Turkish Airlines Drops Parts on Runway

What: Turkish Airlines Boeing 737-800 en route from Istanbul Ataturk to Vienna
Where: Turkey
When: Jul 18th 2010
Why: The Turkish Airlines Boeing took off successfully, but a subsequent plane lining up for takeoff reported parts on the runway.

The parts turned out to be the engine cowling around the thrust reverser from the Turkish Airlines Boeing. The Boeing returned to Istanbul and made a safe landing. An alternative (Airbus) is being flown in as a replacement.

Why: On approach to JFK, the Turkish Airlines Boeing encountered a bird. The flight made a safe landing although it incurred slat damage that will cause a delay in the return flight.

Who: 134 passengers and 6 crew
Why: While en route, the Go Air Airbus encountered a bird. The plane returned to Indore and made a safe landing. Mechanical damage occurred to the plane, although it is not noted exactly where, or if the bird was ingested in the engine.

The flight was cancelled and passengers were rebooked.

China Flight Bomb Scare

What: China Southern Airlines en route from Urumqi to Guangzhou
Where: Zhongchuan Airport
When: July 14, 2010
Who: 93 passengers and 18 crew
Why: While en route, the crew received a warning that there was a bomb aboard. The flight diverted to Zhongchuan Airport where the passengers disembarked. No bomb was found.

American Airlines Precautionary Landing in Amarillo a False Alarm

What: American Airlines Boeing 777 cargo plane en route from Alaska to Dallas
Where: Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport.
When: July 13 2010 7 pm
Who: 21 crew
Why: While en route, the plane’s fire indication light indicated there was a cargo fire. The pilot landed at the closest airport (Amarillo.) The crew disembarked on landing. After inspection by firefighters, the fire was deemed a false alarm, and the flight continued on to Dallas.

Earlier this week another American Airlines flight (N777AN) had a cargo fire indication during a demanding transcontinental flight; however, that plane was configured and operating as a passenger plane.

Air North Boeing Loses Electrics Over CA

Where: over Canada
When: Jul 12th 2010
Why: About 200 miles N of Vancouver, the plane lost electrical power, although maintaining radio contact. The pilot returned to Vancouver where the plane made a safe landing after burning off fuel.

What: American Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from San Francisco to New York
Where: Casper Wyoming
When: Jul 12th 2010
Who: 193 passengers, 9 crew
Why: While en route, the flight developed a smokey odor in the cockpit. The pilot decided to divert to Casper Wyoming. In Casper, when American Airlines found the source of the fumes to be a computer screen, maintenance dealt with the problem, and the plane was allowed to continue with its passengers to the destination.

Air Canada Bleed Leak

What: Air Canada Embraer ERJ-190 en route from Ottawa to Calgary

Who: 91 aboard
Why: While en route, the right engine indicated a bleed leak. The pilots followed procedure, and eventually diverted to Montreal where they made a safe landing. Maintenance repaired the problem by replacing the left engine’s air management sys controller. There is no indication of whether passengers were provided an alternative or if the flight was continued on the same (repaired) plane.

Why: While west of Buffalo, the flight notified Buffalo ATC that they were down to one generator. The flight diverted to Buffalo on one generator and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided alternative transportation.

US Airways Cautionary Landing in Charlotte

What: U S Airways flight en route to Alabama
Where: Charlotte
When: June 29, 2010
Who: 46 passengers
Why: One of the plane’s tires blew on takeoff, and the flight had to make an emergency landing in Charlotte NC. The flight landed safely and passengers were provided an alternative flight.

Where: San Antonio
When: Jun 25 2010 6:34 p.m
Who: 172 people on board
Why: After experiencing air pressurization problems while en route, the oxygen masks were deployed. Unable to handle the problem, the pilot diverted to San Antonio where it made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided Saturday which left at 7:45 a.m. Passengers were provided hotel accommodations in the meantime.

Why: While en route, a fire in a galley oven forced the pilot to divert to Fargo. Flight attendants put out the fire, but the plane was delayed in Fargo for several hours. The flight reached Newark eight and a half hours late.
