Planes Collide at Malta International Airport

A Ryanair plane clipped the wing of a Turkish Airlines aircraft at Malta International Airport, Malta, on January 17th.

The incident happened when the Turkish Airlines plane was departing for Istanbul, Turkey, while the Ryanair flight from Bari, Italy, was taxiing to an apron.

No injuries were reported.

Air Malta Plane Rejects Take Off on Malta after Bird Strike

Air Malta flight KM-100 rejected take-off at Malta International Airport, Malta, on September 20.

The Airbus A319-100 to London Heathrow, United Kingdom, had just started taking-off when it struck a flock of birds.

The plane landed safely.

No injuries were reported.

Air Malta Flight Makes Emergency Landing due to Weather Radar Problem

Air Malta flight KM-186 had to return and make an emergency landing in Malta, on June 6th.

The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Cagliari, Italy, but had to turn back due to an issue with the weather radar.

The plane landed back safely. All passengers and crew members remained unharmed.

Ryanair Flight Rejects Takeoff From Malta International Airport

Ryanair flight FR-3883 had to reject takeoff from Malta International Airport, Malta, on May 18th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was accelerating to takeoff for Luton Airport, England, when the crew received an aft door indication and rejected takeoff.

The plane safely returned to the apron. All one hundred and seventy-two people aboard remained unharmed.

Malta-Bound Ryanair Flight Hits Turbulence

Ryanair flight FR-8928 encountered turbulence on the way to Malta, on January 8th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane was flying from Liverpool, England, when it hit turbulence that injured two passengers.

The plane continued for a safe landing.

The injured were taken to a hospital. The airline said some other passengers were also examined by the medical teams at the airport.

Air Malta Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Germany

Air Malta flight KM-352 made an emergency landing in Dusseldorf, Germany, on January 3rd.

The Airbus A319-100 plane flying from Malta was descending toward Dusseldorf when the crew requested priority assistance due to a burning odor in the cabin.

The plane continued for a safe landing. All one hundred and twenty-five people aboard remained unharmed.

Ryanair Flight Returns to Malta due to Landing Gear Problem

Ryanair flight FR-3775 had to return and make an emergency landing at Malta International Airport, Malta, on October 12th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Bristol, England, but had to turn back after the crew noticed problems with the landing gear.

Light Aircraft Crashes at Airport in Malta; 5 Killed

A light aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Malta International Airport, Malta, on October 24th.

The Fairchild Metroliner was carrying military officers on a surveillance mission on behalf of the French government, at the time.

All 5 people including 3 officials and 2 crew members were killed in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation.

ASL Airlines Belgium Plane Makes Emergency Landing due to Nose Gear Issue

ASLASL Airlines Belgium flight 3V-587 made an emergency landing in, Malta, on August 24th.

The cargo plane was flying from Tunis, Tunisia, when the crew reported issues with the nose gear.

The plane landed safely. There were 2 crew members aboard at the time; both of them remained unharmed.

Ethiopian Airlines Diverts to Malta

On Sept 19, 2013, an Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 757-231 was en route from Rome to Addis Ababa when one engine developed problems.

The flight was diverted to Malta, where they made a safe landing with one engine.

None of the 135 aboard were injured.

The flight took off again later, for Addis Ababa.

Easyjet Airbus Engine Shut Down in Malta


Six minutes after takeoff from Malta, an EasyJet Airbus A320 with a 150 passengers had an engine failure, shut down the affected engine, and returned to Malta. One source said there was only a technical problem and the shut down was just a precaution. No injuries were reported. Passengers described noises like retracting landing gear thumping louder and louder.

Passengers were held in the departures lounge.

The plane made a safe landing with emergency services on standby.

Passengers disembarked after the engine was checked. They were sent a replacement flight to take them to London with a five hour delay.

What: Air India Airbus A330-200 en route from Tripoli to Delhi
Where: Malta
When: Mar 6th 2011
Why: After taking off from Tripoli, the landing gear failed to retract. The pilot diverted to Malta and made a safe landing.

So far, of 18,000 Indians expats, 9,200 people had been evacuated from Tripoli. Egypt Air has also been making chartered flights to bring Indian citizens back home in “Operation Safe Homecoming.” As of Mar 2, Air India had retrieved 6 flights worth of passengers.

Emergency Landing in Malta

What: Smartlynx Airbus A320-200 en route from Tenerife to Antalya
Where: Malta
When: Oct 22 2010
Why: While en route, the flight suffered a loss of cabin pressure. The pilot diverted to Malta where they made a safe landing. In less than 24 hours, the plane was en route again. Disposition of the passengers is unknown.

What: German Lufthansa Airbus A300-600 en route from Malta to Frankfurt.
Where: Malta International Airport
When: Tuesday
Who: 205 passengers evacuated with no injuries.
Why: The crew reported a fire in its cargo hold and returned for an emergency landing 25 minutes after embarking.
