Ryanair Plane Rolls Backwards and Crashes into Ciampino Airport Fire Station Building

RyanairA Ryanair Boeing 737-800, parked at Ciampino Airport, Rome, rolled backwards 40 metres and rammed into an airport fire station on June 5.

The accident occurred shortly after the aircraft landed and disembarked all the passengers.

EasyJet Falling Pieces

On August 12, an easyJet Airbus A320-214 en route from Milan-Malpensa Airport to Lisbon took off okay, but pieces of the plane were falling.

The control tower spotted the debris on the runway.

After losing parts of the engine cowling, pilots made a safe, if dramatic landing back at the Milan-Malpensa. None of the 174 passengers and crew sustained injury, though most of them went through an emotional roller coaster, especially when a passenger screamed out that “A piece of the wing has gone flying.

Pilots circled for twenty minutes before landing; then after landing safely, when pilots put engines into reverse, more stuff fell off the engine. Although fire engines were on standby, standby is all they had to do. Passengers and crew exited via the staircase.

In a genius of understatement, Easyjet confirmed “flight EZY2715 from Milan Malpensa Airport to Lisbon on 12 August returned from airborne shortly after take off due to a technical issue with one of the engines.”

Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

In George’s Point of View

I don’t make a lot of comments, due to my copious free time, but I can’t resist. In the meantime while waiting for the updates, we are considering shipping easyJet some Superglue, or maybe a certified mechanic or two. In the words of mechanics everywhere, lefty loosie, righty tighty. I am no mechanic, but this smells to me like…dare I say it…

Maintenance! Maintenance! Maintenance!

Not to make light of the situation though–airline safety is no joke. We expect there will be public updates about the investigation into this incident.

Zenair Crash in Italy

On Feb 17, 2013 at 16:30, a Zenair which took off from Montemelino crashed in Castelvieto, Corciano Italy. Simone Masci and his companion Monica were aboard, and died in the crash less than a minute after taking off, on fire.

The police did not find witnesses to the crash. Currently investigators say the cause could be anything from mechanical failure to the illness of the pilot to wind shear.

Angela Maria Avila is investigating.

Alitalia Repaint is “Not a Cover-up”

We heard about the Feb 2nd Alitalia ATR-72-500 flight from Pisa to Rome with 50 on board that was hit by hard winds (wind shear) on landing (or else made a hard landing). Cause still under investigation, but it seems to be a disagreement dealing with Mother Nature. The plane overran the end of the runway, and the landing gear was crunched in the process. These things happen. I think there were five or six injuries including a broken leg.

However, there’s a strange wrinkle to the incident.

When it left Pisa, it looked like this:

See the livery? Painted green and red.

After the plane veered off the runway on landing in Rome, after passengers got out (they must have, since there’s no one in it now), the same plane was painted white, livery gone, and no marking on it remaining except for the Romanian flag behind the registration number.

Alitalia had leased the plane from Carpatair. Passengers who flew on that plane thought it was an Alitalia plane. They had purchased Alitalia tickets. There are online interviews of passengers complaining because they believed they had been on an Alitalia plane.

It is not uncommon for airlines to lease planes. What is the responsibility of the ticket agent or airline to notify passengers of the codesharing details?

Alitalia denies this is a cover-up. They say it (meaning painting over their colors very fast before anyone walking about can see) is “standard corporate practice and a way of avoiding bad publicity.”

If “avoiding bad publicity” is not a cover up, what is? Shouldn’t the Italian public flying by that plane beached off the runway know it was flying with Alitalia colors even if it was leased from Carpatair? Is painting over the livery a kind of Romania bashing, especially if a Romanian crew landed a wet-leased plane in bad-wind conditions so that there was no catastrophic loss of life? Good on the crew, whoever they were for no loss of life. Wonder what the investigation will say.

Even if they do not own the plane, Alitalia is accountable. Did they lease it sight unseen? They’d be double-ly accountable for leasing something blind, I would think. I’m thinking they knew what they were flying. Did they not fly it under their colors and sell tickets to passengers who believed they were flying Alitalia with an Alitalia crew? Airlines do this all the time. But it does not become a cover up until the paint job–until the Italian media points the finger–Here’s the thing. It’s public record that it’s a leased plane.

The attention the Italian media is giving this is justified. The public should know they are being handled by the PR department. Alitalia’s strategy: 1)dumping Carpatair codeshares and 2)painting the plane looks more like a publicity cover-up strategy than a move toward safety.

If that’s a wet-leased crew, they landed the plane and no one died.

If repainting is standard policy, what other times has Alitalia repainted on the sly, or otherwise hidden their connection to incidents? How many (this-is-not-a-)cover-ups have there been of incidents at less scrutinized airports than Fiumicino? I am sure the public would love to know.

The investigators are French (ATR) and Romanian (Carpatair). It will be interesting to hear what the Italian people think about it.

Student Pilot Crash in Settebagni Italy

On Feb 1 2013 in Settebagni Italy, an Aerotech Cessna FRA150 en route from Roma-Urbe Airport attempted an emergency landing near a runway at the flight school, made a forced landing and flipped. The plane sustained extensive damage.

The instructor and student were hospitalized for non-life-threatening injuries at 118 al Sant’Andrea for a lumbar trauma and trauma to the shoulder.

Ryanair 737 Diverts to Genoa

Contact photographer Fride Jansson
On January 23, 2013, a Ryanair Boeing 737-8AS wasn en route from Valencia to Bergamo Orio al Serio when the plane developed cabin pressure problems.

Oxygen masks were deployed, which panicked the passengers. The pilots descended the plane to 9,000 feet, and diverted to Christoforo Colombia Genova airport. Emergency services (ground staff of the port of Genoa) were deployed— teams of firefighters and ambulances.

They made an emergency landing. Of the 93 passengers, two women reported injury, one with an ear problem who was sent to the hospital of San Martino, and one in the chest who went to “Villa Scassi” Sampierdarena.

Genoa air traffic was halted to allow for the emergency.

The uninjured passengers were taken to Bergamo aboard buses.

Ryanair’s official statement was that the pilots followed standard operating procedure after the warning light indicated depressurization. “In line with standard operating procedures, the commander has deployed oxygen masks and initiated an emergency descent controlled at an altitude non-pressurized, normally before landing in Genoa at about 9.50.”
“The passengers were transported by bus to Milan in order to minimize the delay while Ryanair engineers are now inspecting the aircraft before putting it back in service.”
