Iraqi Airways Flight Returns to Erbil After Bird Strikes

Iraqi Airways flight IA-916 had to return and make an emergency landing in Erbil, Iraq, on November 4th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane took off for Najaf, Iraq, but had to turn back due to multiple bird strikes.

The plane landed back safely. All ninety-eight people aboard remained unharmed.

Royal Jordanian Airlines Plane Veers Off Runway in Iraq

Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ-800 veered off runway at Sulaimaniyah International Airport, Iraq, on March 4th.

The incident happened when the Embraer ERJ-175 plane was coming from Amman, Jordan.

There were 30 people aboard at the time; the airline confirmed that none of them were injured.

US Passenger Plane Crash-Lands in Iraq

A US passenger plane crash-landed in a field near Erbil in Kurdistan, Iraq, on March 5th.

Authorities said the plane was forced to land in the field due to technical failure.

There were four passengers aboard at the time; none of them were harmed.

Around 30 US soldiers responded and sealed off the scene.

Asiacell Corporate Jet Crashes in Iraq

Who: 13 passengers. 6 survivors reported by media
Why: While climbing out of Sulaymaniyah, an engine of the corporate jet carrying technicians and shareholders with Iraqi mobile phone company Asiacell caught fire. The plane crashed while trying to return to the airport or abort the landing. (One report says it was only ten seconds in the air.) Fatalities included the jet’s crew of three plus a Lebanese and three Iraqis including Bassel (Basil) Rahim, managing partner of MerchantBridge, the London-based investment firm that owns 19 per cent of Asiacell.

A fire broke out in one of the engines as the result of a mechanical problem according to news reports. Ambulances were on the scene. The weather was snowy and overcast.
