Mahan Air Rejects Takeoff

On September 23, 2013, a Mahan Air Boeing 747 en route from Kerman to Medinah aborted takeoff.

Fourteen of the 419 aboard were injured. There were 25 crew aboard also.

The flight was aborted after damage to the tires occurred.

There is no indication if injuries occurred due to the emergency slides or if they were a consequence of the rejected take-off. (We tend to assume that it is the crew who is most likely to be up and about during takeoff, and most likely injured; but emergency slide injuries of exiting passengers are common.)

Where: Tehran
When: Oct 18th 2011

Iran Crash Totals Plane, 157 aboard, 40+ injured, No fatalities

What: Taban Air/Kolavia Tupolev TU-154 en route from Abadan to Mashad (but diverted to Isfahan due to visibility)
Where: Mashad
When: Jan 24th 2010
Who: 157 passengers and 13 crew
Why: The flight had earlier been diverted to Isfahan due to poor visibility in Mashad, and had overnighted in Isfahan. While continuing to Mashad today, a passenger became ill, but poor visibility in Mashad was still an issue. The pilot attempted to land in Mashad in low visibility conditions citing an emergency because of the critically ill passenger.

On touchdown, the plane veered from the runway, the gear landing on an unpaved surface collapsed, one wing impacted the ground and the airplane caught on fire, resulting in fire damage at the rear, where the aircraft’s three engines are mounted. The vertical fin and horizontal stabiliser are no longer attached. Both wings were sheared off. 42 were injured, no fatalities.

Iranian Disaster Management said “The plane went off the runaway upon landing and part of its rear end broke away.”

The carrier has been grounded and their certificate suspended.

More than a decade of problems with Iranian aviation has been attributed to the poor condition of their old fleet, their lack of maintenance. Now perhaps we can add weather.

What: Orenburg Airlines Boeing 737 en route from Perm to Dubai
Where: Iran
When: January 3, 2009
Who: not available
Why: While en route, the crew developed an issue with air traffic control in Dubai which forced an emergency landing in Iran. According to news reports, “The passengers have been given water, and an external air conditioner has been hooked up. In the near future, the aircraft should fly to Dubai.”

The statement sounds as if the passengers and crew are being held aboard the aircraft.

There was apparently no mechanical reason for the diversion.

Why: While enroute, the cabin pressure dropped rapidly. Oxygen masks were deployed, and the plane began an emergency descent to height where a safe pressure could be maintained. The flight continued on to its destination and landed safely.

The crisis is speculated to be due to a malfunctioning or blocked valve in the air conditioning system.

George’s Point of View

This was the second Iranian airliner crash within 10 days. Iran should put their foot down on all airlines, government owned or not to insure that every single plane that takes off is airworthy.
