Cessna in the Drink in Roanoke

What: Colnan Inc. Cessna 550 Citation II
Where: Manteo-Dare County Regional Airport, NC
When: Oct 1 2010 8:30 am
Who: 2 crew 5 passengers
Why: The plane flew successfully from Tampa to Manteo, but on landing, was too fast to stop on the rain-slick runway, but overran the end into the Croatan Sound off of Roanoke Island.

Dare County Regional Airport staff rescued all passengers and crew from the sound. No fatalities. The plane has been recovered, but as you see on the video, is probably a total loss.

What: Trans Air Cessna 550 Citation II en route from Port Moresby to Misima Island
Where: Misima Island Airport
When: Aug 31 2010
Who: 5 occupants, 4 fatalities. 1 crew member survived.
Why: While landing in heavy rain, the plane skidded off the runway and into a wooded area. The co pilot survived. The owner (the pilot Les Wright) died in the crash.

Before this event, CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) had concerns about Trans Air and wanted to bar the carrier from flying to Australia. The investigation questions why the jet overshot the runway.

What: TRIP Linhas Aereas Aerospatiale ATR-42-300 en route from Sao Paulo to Ipatinga to Governador Valadares to Vitoria
Where: Ipatinga Brazil
When: Jun 28 2010
Who: 47 passengers and 4 crew
Why: On landing at Ipatinga, the plane veered off the runway. On touch down, the landing gear came loose and was damaged. The pilot announced to passengers that the left hand propeller did not go into reverse due to a malfunction.

A replacement flight was provided to accommodate passengers flying through to Governador Valadares or Vitoria.

There were no injuries. No opinion has yet been issued on whether the damage was due to a high speed landing or other cause. ANAC is investigating.

What: Hewa Bora McDonnell Douglas MD-82 en route from Kinshasa N’Djili to Kisangani Democratic Republic of Congo to Goma
Where: Kinshasa Democratic Republic of the Congo (Zaire)
When: Jun 21 2010
Who: 101 aboard
Why: When a tire burst on takeoff, hydraulics and an engine were affected. The pilot had to return to the Kinshasa airport and dumped fuel next to the airport, but could not land well because of the damage. On landing, the plane veered off the runway but came to a stop safely in the rough off the runway. In fact, it is the condition of the runway that appears to have caused the problem–assuming the plane ran over a pothole or bump which caused the hydraulic problem and forced the left engine shutdown.

Pakistan: Runway Excursion

What: Shaheen Air International Boeing 737-200 en route from Abu Dhabi to Peshawar
Where: Peshawar
When: Feb 8th 2010
Who: 112 passengers
Why: While landing on a wet runway, the Shaheen Air flight either hydroplaned or experienced a “technical fault.” If the plane had hydroplaned off the end of the runway instead of veering off the side, it could have impacted the traffic like the Congonhas crash. Instead we have a minor muddy runway excursion.

No on one was injured. An airline spokesman said “It was tremendously heavy rain and the aircraft skidded off the runway” but others say it was not raining that much. The plane may return to service this week.

What: West Air Sweden Canadair CRJ-200 on mail flight from Tromso to Longyearbyen
Where: Longyearbyen Svalbard Airport, Norway
When: Jan 25th 2010
Who: 2 crew
Why: On landing, the plane had a runway excursion.

Adjudged to be due to poor braking conditions on the runway, the flight came to rest at angles with the runway and entirely off the paved surface of the narrow (45 meter) runway. Weather has been around zero degrees.

Longyearbyen Svalbard is an Arctic village in an archipelago in the Arctic Ocean north of Europe, halfway between mainland Norway and the North Pole. There aren’t many places more isolated.
