Pegasus Airlines Flight Veers Off Runway at Trabzon Airport, Turkey

Pegasus Airlines flight PC-8622 veered off a runway onto a seaside cliff after landing at Trabzon Airport, Turkey, on January 13th.

The incident happened when the Boeing 737-800 plane was coming from Ankara, Turkey.

The plane came to stop just short of the waters of the Black Sea.

There were one hundred and sixty-two passengers and six crew members aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

Tara Air Plane Skids Off Runway in Nepal; At Least Four Injured

A Tara Air plane skidded off runway at Simikot Airport, Nepal, on November 28th.

The plane was accelerating to takeoff for Surkhet, Nepal, when it blew a nose tire and skidded off the runway.

There were sixteen people aboard, including thirteen passengers and three crew members. At least four of them were injured in the accident, and were taken to Humla district hospital.

The plane sustained substantial damage.

Starbow Airlines Plane Skids Off Runway at Kotoka International Airport

A Starbow Airlines plane skidded off the runway at Kotoka International Airport in Accra, Ghana, on November 25th.

The plane, performing flight S9-104 to Kumasi, Ghana, was accelerating to takeoff when it veered off and crashed into a fence wall.

One passenger was injured in the incident, and was taken to a hospital.

The plane sustained significant damage.

Royal Jordanian Airlines Plane Overruns Runway in Aqaba, Jordan

Royal Jordanian Airlines flight RJ-6888 overran the end of the runway during landing at King Hussein International Airport, Aqaba, Jordan, on September 17th.

The incident happened when the Boeing 737-300 plane was coming from Amman, Jordan.

All one hundred and twenty-six people aboard remained unharmed.

The plane sustained minor damage.

Malaysia Airlines Plane Veers Off Runway in Sibu, Malaysia

Malaysia Airlines flight MH-2718 veered off runway during landing in Sibu, Malaysia, on April 8th.

The incident happened when Boeing 737-800 plane flying from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, was attempting to land during a heavy downpour.

The plane came to stop with its nose gear collapsed. All 61 passengers and 6 crew members remained uninjured.

Peruvian Airlines Plane Catches Fire after Veering Off Runway in Jauja, Peru

Peruvian Airlines flight P9-112 caught fire after it veered off the runway at Francisco Carle Airport in Jauja, Peru, on March 28th.

The Boeing 737-300 plane was coming from Lima, Peru, when it skidded off the runway and burst into flames.

The airline said all 141 people aboard were safely evacuated and none of them sustained any considerable injuries.

The incident is being investigated.

Joy Air Plane Skids off Runway in China; 7 Injured

Joy AirA Joy Air passenger plane, operating flight # JR1529, skidded off the runway at Fuzhou Changle International Airport in Fuzhou, China, on May 10.

The accident happened upon landing, when the plane was coming from Yiwu in Zhejiang province of China.

The plane was carrying 45 passengers and 7 crew members at the time. Among them, a pregnant women and 6 men sustained minor injuries and were taken to hospital.

Malaysia Air Asia Runway Excursion, Plane Skids off Runway

An Air Asia Airbus A320 en route from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia to Brunei International Airport, Brunei suffered a runway excursion on landing.

The airplane touched down and went off the side of the runway, and stopped in soft turf.

Passengers disembarked via emergency slides directly on to the runway.

The landing occurred under wet conditions.

On January 9, 2013, a Jazz Air flight operating as Air Canada Express–flying a de Havilland DHC-8-402Q Dash 8 made a safe landing at John G. Diefenbaker International Airport in Saskatchewan Canada.

The plane was taxiing when it struck ice, and veered off runway into snow where it was mired, blocking the runway.

The fifty-six passengers aboard evacuated with the assistance of emergency crews at about 6:30 after waiting about half an hour for a Saskatoon Transit bus from Tarmac to the gate. Weather conditions at the time were reported as heavy fog causing and near zero visibility in Saskatoon. It looks really cold, doesn’t it?

Rain Hampers Landing of Brazil Flight


On December 14, 2013, an Azul Linhas Aereas Embraer with 98 aboard was en route from São Paulo to Uberlândia-Eduardo Gomes Airport when it made a landing on wet pavement and suffered a runway excursion skidding on to soft grass. There were no injuries reported.

According to Sergeant Ramos, emergency services assisted.

The accident closed the airport pending removal of the plane. There was no damage to the Embraer 195, which operated the flight AD 6913, and Azul’s reports stressed that there were no injury to any of the 93 passengers and five crew members.

Subsequently on the 14th, after heavy rain was recorded, the Civil Defense of Uberlândia asked the population to avoid going through critical points referred to in the city due to possible flooding.

Thai Airways Airbus with Nosegear Failure skids off Bangkok runway, 14 Hospitalized


A Thai Airways International Airbus A330-321 en route from Guangzhou Baiyun International to Bangkok-Suvarnabhumi International (i.e. China to Thailand) had a runway excursion when it landed at its destination.

Fortunately emergency services were on hand to put out the fire that started in the engine.

The Thai Airways statement said there was a “landing gear malfunction.”

The plane went off the right side of the runway, and the nosegear failed.

There were fourteen crew and 388 passengers. Fourteen people were injured and hospitalized in Bangkok. Emergency slides were used to exit the plane. We presume the injuries occurred on the emergency slides.

Theguardian reported that Thai Airways covered up the logo after the accident. This practice is known as the “crisis communication rule” from Star Alliance, and is a measure to save face and reputation.

Executive Runway Excursion, Barbados


An Executive Air Piper PA-34 Seneca en route from Grantley Adams International Airport (Seawell, Christ Church on the island of Barbados) en route to Maurice Bishop International Airport (St. Georges, Granada) took off, but sustained an unsafe gear warning.

Pilots returned to Seawell, and made a semi safe landing (as the two pilots and two passengers were uninjured) but on landing, the right main gear collapsed.

The plane had a runway excursion. Emergency services responded to the scene, and the plane was foamed to prevent a fire.

Korean Airlines Runway Excursion


A Korean Airlines Boeing 737-9B5 en route from Incheon Seoul S Korea to Niigata, Japan with 115 aboard (106 crew) suffered a runway excursion.
The plane came to rest mired in soft grass.

Passengers exited via mobile stairs on to the tarmac where a bus picked them up to take them to the gate.

The plane’s outbound flight has been cancelled but Nigata Airport traffic was not substantially disrupted.

The Korean Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport will conduct a special inspection of Korean Air because “runway overruns are classified as a “serious incident” by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO)”

Kazan Emergency Landing

On August 3, 2013, early in the morning, a UTair Express Antonov An-24 with 28 aboard en route from Nizhny Novgorod to Kazan ran off the runway on landing in Kazan.

There were no injuries.

The plane was towed off the runway.

Utair Boeing Skids off Runway


On July 15, 2013, a UTair Boeing 737-524 en route from Moscow to Kiev ran off the runway on landing. It was misting at the time, leading to a slippery runway but was described as coming to a quick stop at 30-40 meters on level ground.

Firefighters took five minutes to arrive and ambulances five minutes after that but there was no fire and no injury reported.

None of the 77 passengers or crew sustained any injury. Passengers disembarked evacuated from the plane with fixed ladders rather than inflatable emergency ladders on to the soft ground, and were transported to the gate.

Delta: Flight delayed by Mud

Delta Flight 1763 McDonnell Douglas MD-88 en route from Washington DC to Minneapolis was on the tarmac when the right gear left the pavement and got mired in a foot of mud.

160 passengers had to disembark on to the runway. They were bussed back to the terminal, and their takeoff was delayed.

Meanwhile airport crews had to get the plane unstuck.

Passengers scheduled on the 2:53 flight were put on a delayed flight that arrived in Minneapolis/St Paul Intl at Gate G19 at 8:13 p.m..

Egyptian overrun

June 15, 2013
A six year old Boeing 373-86N # SU-BPZ leased from an Egyptian company was providing flight 921 en route from Novosibirsk Russia to Thessaloniki Greece when it skidded off the runway.

The plane stopped past the end of pavement. There were 160 aboard, including 5 crew, none of whom were injured.

The cause of the incident has not been released.

Stormy Weather Leads to Emergency Landing in Tocumen

On May 21, 2013, a Copa Airlines Boeing 737-7V3 a flight from Guayaquil, Ecuador landed in the rain at Tocumen International Airport in Panama.

The plane skidded off the runway, and sustained damage getting mired in soft ground.

Engine 2 sustained damage as the right engine impacted soft ground

The plane was towed to the gate.

107 passengers were aboard the flight, and none of them were seriously injured, according to paramedic teams that responded to the accident. The incident also caused delays at the airport, forcing at least one flight to divert to another airport.

UA Ft Lauderdale-Cleveland Slips off Runway

On Feb 22, 2013 at 10:45 a.m., a United Airlines Boeing 737 from Fort Lauderdale to Cleveland had landed and was taxiing when it suffered a runway excursion on landing on a slippery runway.

The plane ran off the runway in slippery winter weather and ended up on soft ground in the grass.

The Airport said the passengers disembarked without injury and were bussed to the gate.

The plane sustained some undetermined damage.

Abelag Aviation Flight Suffers Runway Excursion

On Feb 15, 2013, a Abelag Aviation Embraer EMB-500 Phenom 100 en route from Kortrijk-Wevelgem Airport to Berlin Schönefeld Airport was landing in Brandenburg and suffered a runway excursion that damaged the plane. The two crew and one passenger were uninjured. The closed runway led to twenty flights being diverted.

The landing gear suffered some damage. The plane was built in 2010, Construction number 50000196, had two Pratt & Whitney Canada PW617F-E Turbofan engines.

Plane Lands in Donetsk Fog and Fire, Four Fatalities

On Feb 13, 2013, a South Airlines An-23 en route from Odessa to Donetsk landed short of the runway in heavy fog, flipped over and caught fire.

There were thirty-nine survivors who managed to evacuate. Four people were confirmed dead. About a dozen people were injured.

There were forty-five passengers and crew. The flight had been chartered for soccer fans going to the UEFA Champions League game between Shakhtar Donetsk and Borussia Dortmund. The flight manifest has not yet been released.

Update: According to one source, the An-24RV was built in 1973. In 2009, it had 50,100 hours. Passengers were fans, including men and women and one boy; 36 passengers and 8 crew though these makeup of numbers vary according to the source. Another source says 4 crew.

The gears reportedly broke into three on touchdown on soft ground.

Volkswagen Air Services Falcon Skids off Runway


On January 30, 2013, a Volkswagen Air Services Dassault Falcon 7X with 3 aboard was taking off from Berlin Tegel Airport when the plane developed a steering problem and skidded off the runway.

Witnesses said it looked as if the plane were caught by a gust of wind.

There were no injuries reported.

Lufthansa Runway Mishap Injures None, Delays Flight

On January 9, 2013 Wednesday afternoon, a Lufthansa Airbus A320-214 was on the runway at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport preparing for a flight to Munich International when the plane slid off the tarmac.

Passengers disembarked and were returned to the terminal. No word on if the same plane continued their journey, if they were provided alternative transportation, or housed in the interim. No word on the cause of the incident.

The plane was towed off the runway.

None of the 76 aboard were reported injured.

Southwest Airlines Long Island Flight Delayed

On December 27, 2012, a Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 was navigating the Islip Long Island tarmac when it went off the pavement into ground and got stuck.

None of the 129 passengers aboard were injured. Passengers exited to the tarmac and were bussed to the gate where they were provided with alternative flights.

The plane is undergoing inspections.
