Who: 37 passengers and three crew
Why: While en route, the flight developed problems with the hydraulics. They diverted to Fresno and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

Indigo Airbus Lands without Steering

What: IndiGo Airbus A320-200 en route from Guwahati to Kolkata
Where: Kolkata India
When: Oct 27 2010
Who: 169 people on board
Why: 7.30pm on approach to Kolkata, the pilot notified ATC that his plane had developed a problem with the hydraulics, and landing gear problems were ruled out.

The plane made a safe landing at 7:53 pm. Nose gear steering was unavailable, so the plane was towed to the gate. While the plane was stuck on the runway, the airport shut down operations, although not for long. Incoming planes had to circle for less than half an hour.

The next leg of the plane’s itinerary was Chennai; another plane was flown in to accommodate the passengers.

Emirates: Flight Called Due to Hydraulics

Where: Kochi India
When: Oct 12, 2010 4.20 a.m.
Who: 205 passengers, 14 crew
Why: After takeoff, the flight developed hydraulic problems with the landing gear.

The plane had to return to Kochi. After landing, 75 passengers were accommodated on the 10:30 flight. The rest of the passengers were accommodated at hotels and promised the next available flights out.

Air Canada Airbus Nose Gear Fails, Emergency Landing

What: Air Canada Airbus A320-200 en route from Calgary to Toronto
Where: Calgary
When: Oct 7 2010
Who: 118 aboard (also reported as 154)
Why: After takeoff, the flight sustained a hydraulic systems failure. The pilot circled to burn off fuel, then landed about an hour later with no further problems. The plane had to be towed to the gate.

Passengers were provided alternative bookings.

Airbus Lands Without Nose Gear Steering in Kansas City

Who: 150 aboard
Why: While en route, the plane’s nose gear became inoperable. The crew diverted to Kansas City where they made a safe landing due to hydraulic problems. Without nose gear steering, the plane had to be towed to the gate.

Passengers were provided an alternative flight.

What: Brussels Airlines Airbus A330-300 en route from Brussels to Dakar
Where: Brussels
When: Aug 25th 2010
Why: While en route, the flight developed a hydraulic problem reflected by an unsafe gear alert. The crew returned to Brussels where they made a safe landing. After repairs, the flight resumed, with a delay of about four hours.

Sibir Airbus Hydraulics Failure

What: S7 Sibir Airlines Airbus A319-100 en route from Perm to Moscow
Where: Moscow
When: Aug 6th 2010 19:47 Moscow time
Who: 94 passengers
Why: On landing approach, the Airbus hydraulics failed. The pilot managed a safe landing. Smoke from forest fires did not impair visibility.

No surprise to me. Details of the hydraulic issue might be of interest.

I recall S7 Airlines Flight 778, an Airbus A310 with 193 passengers and 10 crew members aboard. On landing at Irkutsk , the airbus had a runway overrun. 124 people died when it crashed into the runway barrier.

Where: Hopkins International Airport
When: July 5, 2010
Why: While en route, the plane developed hydraulic problems and had to make a cautionary landing in Cleveland. The plane made a safe landing, with no injuries. The plane taxied to the gate, but there was no indication of the allocation of the passengers–whether they were provided alternative transportation or accommodated at a local hotel.

Why: While en route, the flight developed hydraulic issues and diverted to Manchester where it made a safe landing. However the plane was towed, and no mention is made (yet) of how the passengers were accommodated.

Who: 46 passengers and 6 crew
Why: On landing, a bracket failed, a hydraulic line on the right hand main gear was cut. This resulted in all the hydraulic fluid releasing, and the brakes failing. The crew used reverse thrust and managed to stop the plane.

Continental: Hydraulic Leak over Newark Cancels Japan Flight

What: Continental Airlines Boeing 777-200 en route from Newark,NJ to Tokyo Japan
Where: Newark
When: May 9th 2010
Who: 275 passengers and 16 crew
Why: After take-off, exterior observers saw the gear out and observed a leak which was determined to be the hydraulics. The flight returned to Newark for a safe landing after spending about an hour in the air. They made a safe landing and were towed to the gate. Continental arranged for alternative transportation.

Spanair Cautionary Landing in Madrid

Why: After takeoff, the flight developed an issue with the hydraulics. The crew decided to return to Madrid where they made a safe landing. A replacement jet was provided for the passengers.

Why: On approach to Washington, the plane developed hydraulic problems with the landing gear. The pilot entered a holding pattern while the on board crew repaired the problem, after which the flight made a safe landing.
