Pia Emergency Landing in Iran

On January 4, 2013, a Pia Airbus A310-324 en route from Kuwait to Lahore with 198 passengers aboard diverted to Kerman Airport, Iran.

The plane was en route when it developed a hydraulics problem and diverted to Kerman Airport, according to http://www.aerocenter.ir/forum/thread22299.html#post104898

The flight left Kerman Airport and flew to Karachi where they made a safe landing.

Sriwijaya Air Flight Delayed by Hydraulic Issues

What: Sriwijaya Air Boeing 737-400 en route from Surabaya to Jakarta
Where: Juanda International Airport
When: October 24, 2012 6:30 a.m.
Who: 115 passengers
Why: The Sriwijaya flight returned to Juanda International Airport after a ten minute flight after the plane developed a problem with its hydraulics. No one was injured.

Repairs were made to the plane.

Passengers reboarded and took off for Jakarta at 1 pm that same day.

Jet2 flight with Hydraulic problems diverts to Portugal

What: jet2.com Boeing 757-200 en route from Tenerife to Manchester
Where: Faro
When: Oct 13 2012
Why: The Tenerife to Manchester flight was en route when the plane developed a problem with the hydraulics.

Pilots diverted the flight to Faro in Algarve, Portugal where they made a safe landing.

A replacement jet was provided to complete the flight.

Emirates Emergency Landing in Kochi



What: Emirates Airlines Airbus A330-200 en route from Dubai to Kochi
Where: Kochi
When: September 14 2012
Who: 275 aboard
Why: According to IBN Live, an Emirates flight from Dubai to Kochi developed hydraulic problems and had to make an emergency landing in Kochi.

ATC said “Precautions were taken.” We assume this to mean that emergency services were on standby, but have no indication if any services were actively engaged.

The flight made a safe landing.

PIA Airbus has Hydraulics Problem. Pilots Divert to Karachi

What: PIA Pakistan International Airlines Airbus A310-300 en route from Islamabad to Medina
Where: Karachi
When: Sep 12th 2012
Who: 187 passengers
Why: After the plane’s hydraulic system developed a fault, pilots informed ATC.

ATC recommended diversion to Karachi. Pilots made a safe landing at 9.22 pm. An alternative flight was provided.

American Airlines Diverts to Dublin

What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from London to Boston
Where: Dublin
When: Aug 3rd 2012
Who: 172 aboard
Why: The American Airlines flight diverted to Dublin when the plane developed hydraulic problems.

The pilots managed to land safely but without hydraulics had to be towed. Passengers were provided local accommodations.

The incident tied up the airport as planes were diveted until the affected 757 was removed and examined.

Jet Blue Takes Rocky Road back to Vegas, Jetblue 194 crew superheroes

What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Las Vegas to New York
Where: Las Vegas
When: June 17
Who: 135 passengers
Why: After taking off from Las Vegas, “yellow” hydraulics aboard the jet blue flight failed, leading the pilot to declare an emergency and return to the airport due to “mechanical indications.”

Passengers were getting airsick due to the plane’s rocking locomotion, and described the flight as nightmarish.

On landing, the plane was towed, as the steering was reported as inoperable.

Netherlands Emergency Landing

What: Vueling A320 en route from Amsterdam to Bilbao
Where: Amsterdam
When: Mar 8 2012
Who: not available
Why: The flight was en route when it developed problems with the hydraulics. A “3-VOC” message was sent out from Schiphol Airport.

Pilots returned to Amsterdam and made a safe landing with emergency services on standby. Local television was already interviewing passengers before the plane stopped on the runway.

Transavia Emergency Landing in Rotterdam

Why: Over France,Transavia Flight HV-5023 developed engine and hydraulic problems.

The crew returned to Rotterdam where they made a safe landing.

A replacement flight was provided.

Gol Hydraulic Issue in Sao Paulo

What: GOL Transportes Aereos Boeing 737-800 en route from Rio de Janeiro to Sao Paulo
Where: Sao Paulo
When: Feb 6th 2012
Why: On approach to Sao Paulo, the plane developed problems with the plane’s hydraulic systems. After making a safe landing, the plane was stuck on the runway. Eventually the plane was towed, and the patient passengers were able to disembark (after half an hour.)

Why: After takeoff, the flight developed hydraulic issues.

Pilots diverted to Elmira. However, the hydraulic problem was exacerbated by a flaps problem, leading to an aborted landing and a fly by.

Pilots made a fast but safe landing.

A replacement jet was provided.

Southern Air Transport Landing Causes Airport Closure

What: Southern Air Transport Boeing 747-200 freighter en route from Charleston,SC to Liege Belgium
Where: Liege
When: Dec 11th 2011
Who: 5 crew
Why: On approach to Liege, the pilots encountered issues with the hydraulic systems.

The flight made a safe landing in Liege.

After allowing the Southern Air Transport flight to land, the Liege airport shut down, forcing in bound traffic to divert to other airports.

Tap Airbus Hydraulics Fail Luanda Angola Emergency Landing

Why: On takeoff, the plane developed a hydraulic failure.

The pilots returned to Luanda and made a safe landing. Passengers were in the air about a half hour.

Hydraulics Force Emergency Landing in West Bengal

What: Air-India flight from New Delhi to Gaya
Where: Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport
When: Nov 10, 2011
Who: 119 passengers
Why: After developing hydraulic problems, the flight landed in Kolkata at Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International airport.

The plane is being repaired. Passengers were provided alternative flights.

Jet Blue Diverts to Ft. Lauderdale

What: Jetblue Airbus A320-200 en route from Ponce Puerto Rico to Orlando,FL
Where: Ft. Lauderdale
When: Oct 28th 2011
Who: 1 sick passenger
Why: Because of a sick passenger suffering seizures aboard the flight, the pilot diverted to Fort Lauderdale. On approach to the airport, the crew found hydraulic issues, and descended with little rudder control (due to the hydraulic issues.)

The flight made a safe landing.

Medical services was awaiting the passenger, who was transported to the hospital, after the safe landing.

Air India Emergency Landing in Bhopal

What: Air India Airbus A319-100 en route from Bhopal to Indore
Where: Bhopal
When: Oct 19th 2011
Who: 70 passengers
Why: The Air India flight took off normally but once in the air developed a hydraulic failure.

The flight returned to the airport and made a safe landing after being in the air for a quarter of an hour.

Passengers were booked on alternative flights.

Hydraulics Fumes on Aserca Airlines

What: Aserca Airlines Douglas DC-9-30 en route from Puerto Ordaz to Caracas
Where: Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela
When: Sep 26th 2011
Who: 90 passengers
Why: Four hours after the Aeropostal hard landing emergency at Puerto Ordaz, another emergency occurred, this one a take-off.

A Douglas DC-9-30 took off from Puerto Ordaz and filled with smoke.

The smoke came from a high pressure hydraulic leak. The pilot returned to Puerto Ordaz and made a safe landing with emergency services on standby. No injuries were reported.

Where: Long Beach Municipal Airport
When: Aug 5th 2011
Who: 147 passengers, 5 crew
Why: On approach to Long Beach, the crew saw a hydraulics/ brake problem and aborted their first approach; instead of landing they burned off fuel, then made a safe landing (with an undescended wheel).

Emirates emergency Landing in India

What: Emirates Airbus A330 en route from Dubai to Kochi
Where: Kochi
When: Jul 2nd 2011
Who: 270 passengers
Why: On approach to Kochi, the plane developed a loss of pressure in the hydraulics. (The landing gear would not retract.)

The flight made a safe landing however, though it’s return flight was delayed. Passengers on the return flight were provided alternative transportation or hotel accommodations.

Lufthansa having a bad day

What: Lufthansa Airbus A330-300 en route from Frankfurt/Main to Seattle,WA
Where: Calgary
When: Jun 18th 2011
Who: 197 aboard
Why: Over Greenland, the Airbus A330-300 developed APU and generator failure. On board electrics failed (right hand generator (engine Trent 772), affecting reading lights, cabin and lav lighting. The crew initially was going to divert to Edmonton, but diverted to Calgary when there was a medical emergency.

The flight made a safe landing.

And about fifteen minutes later…
What: Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGX performing flight LH-494 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Calgary,AB
Where: Calgary
When: June 18, 2011
Who: 213 aboard
Why: The Lufthansa flight made an emergency landing with rescue services on standby when they developed a hydraulic problem while approaching Calgary.

The plane made a normal landing.

4 Survive Antonov Crash offshore Gabon, Africa

What: DHL Aviation (leased from Solenta Aviation) Antonov 26
Where: 2.3 km S of Libreville Airport, Gabon
When: 06 JUN 2011
Who: 2 crew 2 passengers
Why: The flight had permission to land when it began experiencing a hydraulic problem, and was flying with difficulty when it crashed into the sea near Libreville Airport. (Although reported as a hydraulics issue, both propellors had stopped according to witnesses, so it may have been a fuel issue. )

One passenger from Gabon and one Bulgarian passenger were on board. The two member crew was Ukranian.

The flight ditched in shallow water and the plane is still visible above the water line.

Gabon has banned Antonov 26 flights in its airspace until further notice

Angels Land at LAX sans Hydraulics

What: Delta Air Lines Boeing 737 en route from Kansas to Irvine
Where: LAX
When: 6:30 pm
Who: Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball team
Why: While en route the plane developed hydraulic issues and diverted to LAX.
The landing gear had to be manipulated manually.

The plane had been slated to land at John Wayne Airport in Irvine.

Nagpur Landing with Faulty Hydraulics

What: Air India Airbus A319-100 en route from Mumbai to Nagpur
Where: Nagpur

Who: 153 passengers
Why: On approach to Nagpur, the pilot reported “a technical fault.” The plane developed a hydraulic problem. Pilots made a safe landing at the Nagpur airport. There is no mention if the foam was employed or if emergency services were on standby. The return flight was cancelled. Passengers were provided accommodations until the replacement flight.

Delta MD-88 Lands in Show of Sparks

What: Delta Airlines McDonnell Douglas MD-88en route from Atlanta,GA to Little Rock, AR
Where: Little Rock
When: Jan 19, 2011
Who: 78 people on board,
Why: On approach to Little Rock, the plane suffered an unsafe gear indication due to a hydraulics problem, and performed a go round for visual confirmation.

The approach was aborted until the gear could be manually extended. Then the plane landed safely with emergency services on standby. No injuries were reported and passengers left the plane singing the captain’s praises.

Emergency Landing in St. Thomas

What: Kestrel Convair C-131F performing a freight flight from St. Thomas
Where: St. Thomas
When: Jan 17th 2011
Who: 2 crew
Why: While climbing out of St Thomas on a ferry flight, the left engine caught fire. The crew reported problems with the planes hydraulics and made a fast landing in St. Thomas. Unable to brake, the plane smashed through the airport fence and ended up on the airport access road.

No injuries occurred but the plane incurred substantial damage.
