British Airways flight BA-233 had to return and make an emergency landing at Heathrow Airport, England, on August 6th.

The Airways Boeing 787-900 plane took off for Moscow, Russia, but had to turn back due to a generator problem.

Finnair Flight Returns to Helsinki due to Generator Failure

Finnair flight AY-1471 had to return and make an emergency landing in Helsinki, Finland, on July 28th.

The Airbus A320-200 plane took off for Vienna, Austria, but had to turn back due to a generator failure.

Delta Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing at JFK Airport

Delta Airlines flight DL-118 made an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on January 2nd.

The Boeing 767-300 plane heading from Boston, Massachusetts, to Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, was diverted due to a generator failure.

The plane landed uneventfully. All one hundred and ninety-seven people aboard remained safe.

Norwegian Air Shuttle Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Amsterdam

Norwegian Air Shuttle flight D8-5370 made an emergency landing in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on November 5th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Alicante, Spain, to Copenhagen, Denmark, was diverted due to a generator failure.

The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

China Airlines Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Japan

China Airlines flight CI-113 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Fukuoka, Japan, on August 15th.

The Boeing 737-800 plane heading from Hiroshima, Japan, to Taipei, Taiwan, was diverted due to problems with an engine generator.

The plane landed safely.

All one hundred and thirty-four people aboard remained unharmed.

Delta Airlines Plane Diverts to Nevada due to Generator Problem

Delta Airlines flight DL-1728 had to divert and make an emergency landing at McCarran International Airport, Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 8th.

The McDonnell Douglas MD-90 flying from San Diego, California, to Minneapolis, Minnesota, had to divert due to some generator problem.

The plane landed safely.

All 158 people aboard remained safe.

Swiss Global Air Lines Flight Diverts to Zurich due to Generator Problem

Swiss Global Air Lines flight LX-528 had to divert and make an emergency landing in Zurich, Switzerland, on June 20th.

The plane heading from Geneva, Switzerland, to Nice, France, was diverted after the crew noticed a generator problem.

The plane landed uneventfully. All one hundred and five passengers remained safe.

J-Air Flight Returns to Osaka International Airport

J AirJ-Air flight JL-2301 had to return and make an emergency landing at Osaka International Airport, Japan, on June 28th.

The plane took off for Matsuyama, Japan, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported failure of right hand generator.

The plane landed uneventfully. There were 32 people aboard at the time; all of them remained safe.

Birmingham-Bound American Airlines Plane Diverts to Canada

American AirlinesAmerican Airlines flight AA130 made an emergency landing in Gander, Newfoundland, Canada, on August 24.

It is believed that the plane was diverted after cabin lights went off due to generator malfunction. According to the airline, “American Airlines Flight 130 travelling from New York John F. Kennedy Airport to Birmingham International Airport, UK diverted to Gander, Newfoundland due to the cockpit crew reporting a mechanical issue. An emergency landing was declared due to the aircraft being overweight, landing without incident at 23.45 local time.”

All 148 passengers remained unharmed.

Malaysian Airlines Flight MH066 Makes Emergency Landing in Hong Kong

Malaysian airlines

Malaysian Airlines flight MH066 had to make an emergency landing in Hong Kong after its main electrical power generator failed.

The flight was on its way from from Kuala Lumpur to Seoul when the main generator of Airbus A330-300 stopped working.

The plane, carrying 271 passengers, safely landed at the Hong Kong International Airport on Monday, March 24, before 3 am.

Malaysian Airlines maintains that even though the main generator failed, the plane’s auxiliary power unit was able to continue delivering electric power.

Emergency Landing in Albuquerque


On Jan 11, 2013, Flight 1868, an American Airlines MD-80 en route from Las Vegas to Dallas was in the air when a problem developed in a plane generator. There were 150 passengers and 5 crew.

The Captain told passengers that the backup generator failed, so they had to divert to Albuquerque International where they made a safe landing at 8:30 a.m.

No injuries were reported.

Passengers were informed the plane was going to maintenance and they were placed on alternative flights to Dallas.

Emergency Landing in Multan Pakistan

What: PIA Pakistan International Airlines Boeing 737-300 en route from Islamabad to Karachi
Where: Multan Pakistan
When: Sep 27th 2011
Who: 118 passengers
Why: While en route, the one working generator failed. The captain announced to the passengers that they were having technical problems.

The crew diverted to Multan and made a safe landing; the flight landed with subdued lighting. One main generator was completely non-operational.

Passengers were rebooked on an alternative flight.

Lufthansa having a bad day

What: Lufthansa Airbus A330-300 en route from Frankfurt/Main to Seattle,WA
Where: Calgary
When: Jun 18th 2011
Who: 197 aboard
Why: Over Greenland, the Airbus A330-300 developed APU and generator failure. On board electrics failed (right hand generator (engine Trent 772), affecting reading lights, cabin and lav lighting. The crew initially was going to divert to Edmonton, but diverted to Calgary when there was a medical emergency.

The flight made a safe landing.

What: Lufthansa Airbus A340-300, registration D-AIGX performing flight LH-494 from Frankfurt/Main (Germany) to Calgary,AB
Where: Calgary
When: June 18, 2011
Who: 213 aboard
Why: The Lufthansa flight made an emergency landing with rescue services on standby when they developed a hydraulic problem while approaching Calgary.

The plane made a normal landing.

What: Agni Air Dornier 228-101 en route from Katmandu to Lukla
Where: Bastipur, ~18nm SSW of Kathmandu, Nepal
When: Aug 24, 2010
Who: 14 aboard, 14 fatalities. 11 passengers, 3 crew (At one point there was an announcement of an additional passenger whose nationality was unknown. This is unconfirmed.)
Why: Due to poor weather conditions in Katmandu, the crew diverted to Simara Airport. ATC lost contact at 7.30 am. The plane’s generator had been causing problems and it failed, then the backup generator failed. Without a generator, the pilot is flying blind, without avionics. The flight crashed at 9000 feet in a hillside near Bastipur in Shikhapur.

Other reports say the engine failed.

The casualties were Capt. Lucky Shah, co-pilot Sophia Singh, flight attendant Sahara Sherpa, and passengers R Rijal, P Humagain, P Bhote, K Rai and P Sherpa.

Six foreigners were aboard:four Americans: Irina Shekhets (30), Levzi Cordoso (49), Heather Finch (40), and Kendra Fallon (18), one Japanese: Yuki Hayashe (19) and a Brit: Jeremy Taylor (30) .
This is monsoon season, and the area is remote, and roads many roads are blocked due to landslides. Villagers report scattered plane parts and body parts, and rescue teams are en route.

Why: While west of Buffalo, the flight notified Buffalo ATC that they were down to one generator. The flight diverted to Buffalo on one generator and made a safe landing. Passengers were provided alternative transportation.

Why: While en route, the plane experienced generator failure. The crew declared emergency and returned to Riga where they made a safe landing.
A replacement jet was flown in fewer than 4 hours later.
