Asiana Airlines Plane Diverts to Germany due to Open Gear Door

Asiana Airlines flight OZ-588 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, on May 27th.

The Boeing 747-400 flying from Brussels, Belgium, to Seoul, South Korea, had to divert because one of its main gear doors was open.

The plane landed safely.

No one was injured.

Small Plane Crash-Lands at Pensacola International Airport

A small plane crash-landed at Pensacola International Airport in Florida, on January 29th.

Authorities said the Cessna 177 plane sustained significant damage after it landed without its gear deployed.

There were two people aboard at the time; none of them was injured.

The cause of incident is being investigated.

AirBaltic Flight Makes Emergency Landing in Latvia

AirBaltic flight BT-136 had to make an emergency landing in Riga, Latvia, on December 28th.

The plane was flying from Copenhagen, Denmark, when the crew reported a gear indication and performed a go-around to work checklists.

The plane subsequently continued for a safely landing. All 64 passengers and 4 crew members remained unharmed.

Aegean Airlines Flight Returns to Athens due to Gear Problem

Aegean airlinesAegean Airlines flight A3-610 had to return and make an emergency landing in Athens, Greece, on October 2nd.

The Airbus A321-200 plane took off for Charles de Gaulle Airport, France, but had to return shortly afterwards after the crew reported issues with the gear.

The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unhurt.

The airline arranged a replacement plane for the passengers.

Alitalia Flight Makes Emergency Landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport

AlitaliaAlitalia flight AZ-63 made an emergency landing at Rome Fiumicino Airport, Italy, on September 29th.

The Airbus A320-200 plane flying from Madrid, Spain, was on approach to Rome Fiumicino Airport when the crew received an unsafe gear indication and declared an emergency.

Westjet Encore Plane Diverts to Canada after Gear Doors Could not Shut

WestJetA Westjet Encore flight WS-3119 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Vancouver International Airport, British Columbia, Canada, on July 26th.

The de Havilland Dash 8-400 flying from Kelowna, to Vancouver, Canada, had to divert when after its gear doors could not shut.

The plane landed safely.

No one was injured.

Icelandair Plane Returns to Iceland due to Gear Issue

IcelandairIcelandair flight FI-631 had to return and make a safe emergency landing at Keflavik International Airport, Keflavik, Iceland, on May 21st.

The Boeing 767-300, en-route to Boston, Massachusetts, was climbing out of Keflavik’s runway when the crew detected retraction issue with the gear, prompting the plane to return.

The plane landed safely. All people onboard remained unharmed.

The passengers were accommodated in a replacement plane.

Croatia Airlines Plane Returns and Makes Emergency Landing in Germany

Croatia Airlines flight OU-417 had to return and make an emergency landing at Frankfurt Airport, Frankfurt am Main, Germany, on March 31st.

The Airbus A320-200, en-route to Zagreb, Croatia, had just departed Frankfurt’s runway when the crew reported hydraulic problems, resulting in landing gear retraction issue, prompting the plane to return.

The plane landed uneventfully.

All people onboard remained unharmed.

Aer Lingus Plane Returns to JFK due to Hydraulic Failure

Aer LingusAer Lingus flight 110 had to return and make an emergency landing at John F. Kennedy International Airport, New York, on September 28.

The Boeing 757 that took off for Shannon airport, Ireland, was diverted after the pilot reported landing gear door problems, hydraulic failure, and no flaps.

Fire was sparked in the left rear brakes as the plane touched the runway. Emergency responders immediately extinguished the fire and all 104 passengers were transported back to the terminal safely.

Atlas Dreamliner Emergency Landing at Paine Field

The Atlas Air Boeing 747 en route from Everett to Japan had taken off when the hydraulics failed. When the nose gear doors failed, pilots did a fly by and returned to the airport.

The 747 is retrofitted to carry Dreamliner parts, and dubbed a “dreamlifter.”

The flight departed from Paine Field at 3 pm.

The flight made a safe landing.

Russian Sukhoi Superjet Makes Emergency Moscow Airport Landing


On March 7, 2013, an Aeroflot Sukhoi Superjet registration #RA-89009 was en route from Moskow to Nizhny Novgorod when the landing gear failed. The gear doors failed to close.

Pilots returned to Moscow, and maintained a holding pattern till they landed at 16:52. Pilots made a safe landing at Sheremetyevo Airport.

No injuries to the 84 aboard (77 passengers, 7 crew) were reported.

The Sukhoi Superjet has also suffered engine failures. Less than a month ago, Russia’s Federal Air Transport Agency suspended flights of four of the 10 aircraft Sukhoi Superjet due to failures in the system of the chassis and wings.

Why: After takeoff, the nose gear door did not close.

After a flyby that confirmed the problem, the flight returned to Sheremetyevo Airport and made a safe landing.

After landing, examination confirmed that the door was broken. The issue with the door involves “a known problem” “a design flaw.”
