What: Swiss Airbus A340-300 en route from Miami to Zurich
Where: Atlantic Ocean
When: Jul 30th 2010
Who: 227 passengers
Why: Three/fourths of an hour out of Shannon, the flight developed various electrical problems with the circuit breakers affecting cabin lighting and the inflight entertainment system. With cabin lighting off, they diverted to Shannon, where the flight made a safe landing.

Passengers were provided alternative flights, albeit not on several different planes.

What: Air North Boeing 737-200 en route from from Vancouver to Whitehorse
Where: over Canada
When: Jul 12th 2010
Why: About 200 miles N of Vancouver, the plane lost electrical power, although maintaining radio contact. The pilot returned to Vancouver where the plane made a safe landing after burning off fuel.

What: American Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Boston to Paris
Where: (over Atlantic) Gander
When: Jun 2nd 2010
Why: While en route, the flight experienced problems with their standby battery recharging system. (The battery is essential to standby power in an emergency situation. ) The flight diverted to Gander where it made a safe overweight landing. A replacement jet was provided.

Where: Cochabamba Bolivia
When: Feb 16th 2010
Who: 87 passengers
Why: While en route, the plane developed electrical problems and had to put down in Cochabamba. After overnighting in hotels, passengers will be flown back to Santa Cruz, and then on to Miami. No details have been released about the plane, as far as we know.

What: ETHIOPIAN Airlines Boeing 757-200 en route from Bamako Mali to Addis Ababa

Who: 150 passengers
Why: After circling N’Djamena for an hour and dumping fuel, the plane made an emergency landing in Chad on Thursday. The emergency was attributed to a radar problem. Earlier the same plane had electrical problems on an earlier leg of the flight.

Why does this sound to me like an accident waiting to happen? Maintenance! Please!! Let us not have more bad news!

Why: Prior to landing, the jet suffered electrical problems resulting in smoke and a loss of power. The crew managed a safe landing. Passenger debarked on the runway and were bussed to the gate. The plane was taken out of commission for maintenance/observation/repairs.

Why: A couple of hours into the flight, Galley power failed. Electrical loss impacted more than the galley. The flight returned to Paris for a safe landing, and the announcement was made that passengers were at no time in danger.

Where: off Golden Gardens Park in Shilshole Bay
When: August 28, 2009
Who: pilot Roger Collins
Why: When Collins experienced problems with his landing gear, he landed on Shilshole Bay, and his plane flipped. This post’s title is a quote originating from Mike Pugel with the Seattle Police Harbor Patrol who was on the scene.

Southwest Emergency Landing in Long Island

What: Southwest Airlines en route from Bradley International Airport Hartford,CT to Orlando
Where: diverted to Long Island Islip Macarthur Airport
When: July 26, 2009
Who: 132 passengers and 5 crew
Why: After take-off, the crew detected an “electrical smell” and smoke; oxygen masks were deployed, and the plane diverted to Long Island where the passengers debarked without incident, and took an alternate 737-300 to Orlando. The original plane was taken out of service for a complete inspection which determined that the electrical smell originated from the burner of a coffee maker in the back of the aircraft.

Lufthansa Airbus Emergency Landing in Newark NJ

When: Jul 19th 2009
Why: Near Boston, the plane developed electrical problems; and the crew decided to return to Newark. The passengers debarked and were only delayed two and a half hours before being permitted to continue their flight.

What: American Airlines MD-80 Flight 1243 en route from Ft. Lauderdale to Dallas
Where: Lafayette’s Regional Airport
When: 11:35 a.m. Monday
Who: 151 on board
Why: In the cabin, passengers experienced smoke and fumes en route; the pilot diverted to Lafayette because of a suspected electrical problem.

Passengers were provided three options: ticket-exchange, rent a car for the rest of their trip or wait for the replacement MD-80.

Who: 166 passengers 12 crew
Why: While still over Quetta, the cockpit filled with smoke. One source reports the fire apparently reportedly began in the AC system. (again.) Another says an electrical problem sparked a small fire in the cockpit.

In any case, the crew requested an emergency landing, and landed safely. No injuries were reported. The passengers resumed their flight 3 hours later.

Where: Hercilio Luz International Airport in Florianópolis
When: Thursday June 11
Who: Number of passengers was not released
Why: After the plane experienced electrical failure, the flight out of Hercilio Luz International Airport in Florianópolis was cancelled.

Smoke Gets In Your Eyes … in AA Boeing 767 over Nova Scotia

What: American Airlines Boeing 767-300 en route from New York JFK airport to Switzerland
Where: Halifax Nova Scotia
When: June 9 2009 Tuesday night 8:20 p.m (45 minutes after takeoff)
Who: 206 on board: 194 passengers and 12 crew
Why: After takeoff, smoke was detected in the cabin. The flight requested an emergency landing in Halifax. The cause of the smoke was determined to be an electrical fire in the plane’s bathroom ceiling fan which had caught fire after overheating

A replacement jet was arranged to take the passengers to Zurich.

Emergency Landing in Quad


What: United Express Embraer 175 en route from Pittsburgh to Denver
Where: Quad-Cities International Airport,
When: Thursday, June 4 9:05 a.m.
Who: Sixty-seven passengers and four crew (2 flight attendants, a pilot and co-pilot.)
Why: When smoke filled the cabin, and there were electrical problems, the flight diverted to Quad City International Airport in Moline. Emergency slides were not used, and there were no injuries.

It took under ten minutes from the perception of the emergency to the safe landing.

First Solo Flight ends Well


What: single-engine Cessna 172 Skyhawk returning from a practice flight to Glens Falls, N.Y
Where: Dillant-Hopkins Airport in Cheshire County, New Hampshire
When: Sunday Jan 25 2009
Who: Sarah Steves, an aviation student at Daniel Webster College in Nashua NH
Why: On her first solo cross-country night flight, the pilot experienced power in the plane’s lights and radio. She managed to make an emergency call. Rick Bendel, manager of Monadnock Aviation notified emergency dispatchers who notified Keene and Swanzey fire official with an emergency action plan in place for airport emergencies.

Steves had a hard landing on all 3 wheels w/o lights and taxied to the terminal without further incident.

Valley View Airport Crash update


What: 1964 Cessna P206 en route to Valley View Airport in Estacada
Where: a field near the 30700 block of Northeast Lawrence Road
When: Found at 7:50 pm
Who: 54-year-old Mark Greenup, a Christmas tree farmer believed to have been flying the 1964 Cessna
registered to him, and 50-year-old George Smetana, both killed in the crash
Why: The pilot called the airport’s owner of the airport to report all of the electrical equipment on the plane had become inoperable.
