What: SAS Scandinavian Canadair CRJ-900 en route from Copenhagen Denmark to Helsinki Finland
Where: Copenhagen
When: Dec 28th 2009
Who: not available
Why: While en route, the pilot determined that deicing had failed. (Prior to taking off in icy weather, planes are treated with icing retardant. One can presume that the plane was icing over in spite of the de-icing procedure.) Also, conditions in Helsinki were a factor.

At the time of this posting, these are the weather conditions in Helsinki:

Unreliable Airspeed: Blame it on the Bee

What: SAS Norway Boeing 737-700 en route from Oslo Gardermoen Norway to Malaga Spain
Where: Gardermoen Airport
When: May 30th 2009
Who: 134 passengers
Why: After takeoff, airspeed numbers did not agree. The crew landed back at the airport about half an hour after takeoff. Passengers were flown to their destinations on an alternative Boeing 737-800.

Mechanics found the problem. A bee had flown into one of the plane’s air speed sensors (pitot tube).

George’s Point of View

A good thing that the pilot was able to land the plane and discover the problem.

What: SAS Norge Boeing 737-800 en route from Oslo Gardermoen to Tromsø Norway
Where: Tromsø Norway
When: Feb 5th 2009
Who: Number of passengers not released
Why: While descending for landing approach, the flight encountered “clear air turbulence.” Apparently the seat belt lights were already on, and the only one injured was a flight attendant who was knocked off her feet and broke her ankle.

Subsequent to the event, it was determined that although the flight crew had no inkling of it, that turbulence had been forecast by Significant Meteorological Information (SIGMET).

George’s Point of View

The incident may call for some kind of update of the on board warning system(s).
