Fourth Qantas Flight Makes Emergency Landing in 48 Hours

QantasA Qantas flight had to return and make an emergency landing at Hobart Airport in Tasmania, Australia, on the evening of December 9.

The Melbourne-bound Boeing 717 had to turn back, just 20 minutes after taking off, after a warning system indicated a technical issue with the aircraft.

The flight was able to depart again at 7:40 p.m.

This is the 4th emergency landing of a Qantas jet within 48 hours. The airline insisted that the incidents were un-related. According to Qantas chief Alan Joyce, “We have really high reliability. We have low levels of turnbacks compared to most of the world fleets.”

Qantas Flight Returns to Perth Due to Unusual Odor in Cabin

21.

The plane, en-route from Bangkok, Thailand to Sydney, Australia, was diverted after a 34-year-old drunk passenger repeatedly attempted to steal whisky and broke all 4 sets of plastic handcuffs aboard.

Several police officers were ready at the scene for arresting the passenger when the plane touched the runway.

According to the Australian Federal Police, “A 34-year-old man has been charged with behaving in an offensive and disorderly manner contrary to section 256AA of the Civil Aviation Regulations 1988 and interfering with crew or aircraft contrary to section 24(1) of the Civil Aviation Act 1988.”

Confirming the incident, the airline said, “Qantas has a zero tolerance approach to antisocial behaviour on our aircraft.”

Water Leak Floods the Aisles; Qantas Flight Returns to LAX

QantasQantas Airways Flight 94 had to return and make an emergency landing at Los Angeles International Airport due to a water pipe leak, on July 2.

The Airbus A380 was en route from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia and was cruising at an altitude of about 31,000 feet when it sprung a leak, making the aisles flood with water.

The pilot then decided to return to Los Angeles, where the plane made a safe emergency landing at about 2:40 a.m. No one was injured.

According to a statement released by Qantas, “[The crew] did everything they could to help customers, including moving them to unaffected areas and providing spare blankets so they could stay dry.” The statement further said, “We’re also providing customers with hotel accommodation while the issue is being fixed by our engineers in Los Angeles. We apologise to customers for the inconvenience. There were no safety of flight concerns with the water leak, however the Captain decided to return to LA in the interests of passenger comfort. We are liaising with Airbus to understand what caused this fault.”

Qantas Flight Diverts to Tamworth due to Damaged Tire

QantasA Qantas flight en route to Armidale from Sydney had to divert and make an emergency landing in Tamworth, NSW, Australia, on June 17.

The incident happened after one of the plane’s tires blew off during take-off. According to Qantas, the plane carrying 44 people was diverted to Tamworth because maintenance facilities were available at the airport.

The fire brigade, ambulances and police responded. The Tamworth Base Hospital was also put on alert.

The plane made a safe landing at about 9 p.m., after burning off extra fuel. No one was injured.

The passengers were transported to Armidale by bus.

Qantas engineers replaced the damaged tire.
