Austrian Airlines Flight Returns to Vienna

Austrian AirlinesAustrian Airlines flight OS-935 made an emergency landing in Vienna, Austria, on August 5th.

The plane took off for Klagenfurt, Austria, but had to turn back due to a defective instrument screen.

The plane landed safely. Everyone aboard remained unharmed.

Austrian Airlines Plane Diverts to Turkey due to Burning Odor

Austrian AirlinesAustrian Airlines flight OS-832 had to divert and make an emergency landing at Istanbul Ataturk Airport, Istanbul, Turkey, on April 21st.

The Airbus A320-200, heading from Larnaca, Cyprus, to Vienna, Austria, was mid-air when the crew reported a burning odor from its air conditioning system.

The plane landed uneventfully.

All people onboard remained unharmed.

Austrian Airlines Plane Makes Emergency Landing in Zurich

Austrian AirlinesAustrian Airlines flight LX-1193 had to make an emergency landing in Zurich, Switzerland, on January 17.

The plane was flying from Nuremberg, Germany, when the pilots noticed stuck flaps and declared an emergency.

The plane landed safely. No injuries were reported.

Austrian Airlines Plane Diverts to Canada due to Unruly Passenger

Austrian AirlinesAn Austrian Airlines flight had to divert and make an emergency landing at St. John’s International Airport, Newfoundland, Canada, on January 10.

Authorities said the plane, en-route from Vienna to New York, was diverted due to a 35-year-old Israeli man who was showing disruptive behavior on-board.

The plane landed uneventfully. Everyone aboard remained unhurt.

The unruly passenger was removed from the plane and was shifted to Health Sciences Center to be seen by a doctor.

Authorities said he is facing several charges including uttering threats and causing disturbance in flight.

Four Killed in Helicopter Crash in New South Wales

On March 21, 2013 at about 1215 Eastern daylight-saving time, a Bankstown Heliport Robinson R44 on a private flight from Bankstown to Bulli Tops, New South Wales with four aboard suffered a terrain collision near Panorama House in Bulli Tops near Wollongong in NSW.

Emergency services arrived on the scene around 1:43 pm. After the crash, the helicopter burned. Thirty units responded to the scene.

The ATSB is investigating.

What: Austrian Airlines De Havilland Canada DHC-8-402Q Dash 8 en route from Florence Italy to Vienna
Where: Vienna International Airport
When: Nov 5 2012
Who: 80 aboard 76 passengers, 4 crew
Why: On landing at Vienna International Airport, the Austrian Airlines De Havilland Dash lost the inboard wheel of the right landing gear.

There were no injuries reported. The accident is under investigation.

Why: A Fokker being towed struck a Boeing in the hanger.

Both planes suffered damage which has been repaired.

What: Austrian Airlines Airbus A320-200 en route from Vienna to Innsbruck
Where: Innsbruck
When: Oct 7th 2011
Who: 57 passengers
Why: The plane was descending over Innsbruck when it was struck by lightning. The crew aborted the approach, and returned to Vienna, where they made a safe landing. The decision was made to return to Vienna because appropriate inspection and repair could not be completed in Insbruck. The return flight was made at a lower altitude of 12,000 feet.

(I can just imagine how the passengers felt after experiencing a lightning strike, and then having to end up going back where they started, instead of landing.)

On arrival in Vienna, passengers were provided alternative bookings.

Faulty Landing Gear Interrupts Austrian Airline, Delays Flight

Why: After takeoff, the gear would not retract.

The pilot returned to make a safe landing in Vienna; repairs were made and the flight left again less than an hour later.

One common occurrence in Commercial Aviation is when a maintenance person forgets to remove the Landing Gear Safety Pin that is connected before starting the push back procedure during the aircraft start-up. It happens that that pin prevents the hydraulic system to actuate the nose gear allowing the tractor to freely steer the aircraft free from the gate. However that pin also locks the landing gear in the “down” position preventing the hydraulic system to retract in when commanded by the pilots. The result is that the aircraft is prevented from retracting its landing gear (one pin prevents them all) and returning is mandatory.

If the airplane is engaged in an intercontinental flight (thus carrying a huge amount of fuel) the crew invariably must dump a great amount of fuel in order to reduce the weight to within the manufacturer’s certified maximum landing weight in order to perform a safe landing. After dumping the fuel as the aircraft’s weight reaches its maximum allowed for landing the crew land the airplane. Unfortunately it causes delays and it is a nuisance, although not a harmful one. The worst part is for the maintenance crew whom was responsible for the tow out procedure to explain to his (or hers) superiors the quite expensive forgetfulness.

TAT Technologies Wholly Owned Subsidiary, Piedmont Aviation Component Services Has signed a Five Year APU maintenance Agreement with Austrian Airlines

February 3, 2011 — TAT Technologies Ltd. a leading provider of services and products to the commercial and military aerospace and ground defense industries, today announced that its wholly-owned subsidiary, Piedmont Aviation Component Services (“Piedmont”), has signed a five year APU (Auxiliary Power Unit – a small gas turbine engine) maintenance Agreement with Austrian Airlines (“Austrian”) covering Austrian Boeing 767 fleet GTCP331-200 APU. The maintenance agreement for the GTCP-331-200 model is in addition to an existing contract between Austrian and Piedmont for the CRJ200 fleet GTCP36-150RJ APU.

Mr. Burkard Wigger, Vice President Technical Operations at Austrian Airlines said: “With Piedmont Aviation Component Services, we have found a professional partner who is very committed to our inquiries and comes up with tailored solutions that fit our demands. Piedmont offers expert knowledge in APU maintenance and has already proved to deliver reliable and satisfying services in our cooperation.”
TAT’s President and CEO, Dr. Shmuel Fledel, commented on the new agreement: “We are proud of the solid relationship between Austrian and Piedmont. For the last 4 years we have been successful with the current 36-150RJ APU contract and the addition of the 331-200 APU model demonstrates the high level of confidence and cooperation between the two companies. Who: 81 passengers, 4 crew
Why: On landing in Minsk Belarus, the crew reported an unsafe indication, later determined to be caused by a fauly sensor.The crew made an accommodation and made a safe landing. No injuries were reported.

What: Austrian Airlines de Havilland Dash 8-400 en route from Vienna Austria to Iasi Romania
Where: Iasi
When: Feb 10th 2010
Who: 27 passengers and 4 crew
Why: After reporting smoke in the cockpit, the crew made a safe landing wearing oxygen masks, landing ten minutes early in Iasi. The cause of the smoke is under investigation. Newspapers reported a fire had broken out in the cockpit and that passengers disembarked without injury, without noting if slides were used, or if they deplaned on to the tarmac. The plane will not be making the scheduled flight to Vienna but will be in maintenance.

With the early arrival however…one cannot help but picture the investigator inquiring…”What? The flight is early? That we really have to look in to…”

Austrian Airlines Fokker Smokes Take-off

What: Austrian Airlines Fokker 100 en route from Belgrade Serbia to Vienna Austria
Where: Belgrade
When: Jan 19th 2010
Who: 83 passengers and 5 crew
Why: After passengers had boarded but before they took off, the left hand engine began smoking. Passengers disembarked and the flight was cancelled. The flight was reported alternately as an aborted takeoff and engine fire, but in our opinion, the most credible report seems to be that the flight never actually attempted to get off the ground.

What: Austrian Airllines Boeing-737-800 en route from Vienna to Sofia Bulgaria
Where: emergency landing at Vienna airport
When: 06. 03. 09.
Who: 72 passengers
Why: After the crew of AUA flight OS 797 found smoke filling the cabin, the plane made an emergency landing–shortly after take-off. It was a really short flight. THey took off at 1:47 pm and landed at 1:52pm. Economy Minister Nina Radeva was among those on board.
