Air New Zealand Pilot Collapsed, Died after Landing Dreamliner in Perth

An Air New Zealand pilot collapsed shortly after she landed the Flight NZ175 full of passengers in Perth, Australia, on October 26.

Air New ZealandIt is suspected that Captain Ann Barbarich, 59, one of the first female pilots to work for Air New Zealand, suffered a brain aneurysm, just minutes after landing the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner. One of the 3 other pilots took controls and taxied the aircraft to the gate.

Captain Barbarich was examined by 2 doctors aboard and was then rushed to the Royal Perth Hospital where she died 2 days later on October 28.

None of the 233 passengers aboard was injured.

According to Air New Zealand chief pilot David Morgan, “Ann was at the controls when the aircraft landed in Perth and the aircraft landed normally…Unfortunately after landing she became seriously ill. Another pilot took over and taxied the aircraft to the gate while the other pilots began to assist Ann. The aircraft was safe and under control at all times…Ann will be sadly missed by everyone at Air New Zealand. We have been actively supporting her family over recent days and will continue to do so. Our thoughts continue to be with them at this difficult time.”

Airborne Medical Emergencies Abound

I doubt that April is any worse a month for medical emergencies, but just to give you a snapshot at how common it is—at least this past week—

  • April 5 American Airlines New York to Buenos Aires Diverted to Caracas Venezuela with a sick man-
  • April 6 (April 5-6) Cathay Pacific Chicago-Hong Kong An undisclosed medical emergency occurred; flight diverted to Anchorage for the medical emergency. (The flight had a second diversion, probably for a crew change before arriving at their destination.)
  • April 7 Air New Zealand London to LAX A diabetic ten year old boy received assistance from crew as pilots diverted to Minneapolis. The boy was hospitalized in Minneapolis.
  • April 8 Egyptair Cairo to Nigeria Infant became ill; crew returned to Cairo and made a safe landing. The infant was hospitalized.
  • April 9 Delta Japan- Honolulu passenger suffered an attack 2 hours outside of Honolulu; cabin crew and nurse/passenger attempted cardiopulmonary resuscitation but pronounced DOA.
  • April 10 LAN Airlines Santiago to Arica male passenger suffered a stroke. A doctor provided first aid; Flight diverted to Copiapo where the passenger was hospitalized.

In George’s Point of View

These medical incidents really don’t differ from how many we usually see–maybe its just spring fever, but I’m just sayin’…make sure you’re a-ok before you set foot on board!

What: Air New Zealand Boeing 767-300en route from Auckland to Perth,WA
Where: Auckland
When: Jun 9th 2011
Who: 206 passengers, 10 crew
Why: Just after takeoff, while climbing, the left hand engine shot flames and emitted engine backfire and banging noises. The pilots described an interruption to the airflow through the left hand engine. The pilot shut down the engine and returned to Auckland where they made a safe landing. No bird strike was found, although that was initially assumed to be the cause. The engine’s electronic control has been replaced, and the engine is being tested; and the engine’s electronic control has been shipped to the manufacturer for testing.

Passengers were provided an alternative flight to Perth. Some of them were shaken, although the airline says they were never in any danger.

Air New Zealand Loses Engine, Makes Safe Landing

What: Air New Zealand Boeing 737-300 en route from Auckland to Wellington
Where: Hamilton
When: May 8, 2011
Who: 101 aboard
Why: While en route, the pilots shut down the right engine. Low oil pressure is suspected to be the problem.

Passengers heard the right engine make an explosive noise. In the plane, passengers panicked as they dropped for several seconds—screaming, crying, praying, panic attacks.

The plane rolled right, then straightened.

After a few moments, the pilot came out and reassured the passengers, explaining that they’d lost an engine, but it was a routine procedure they practiced all the time and that everything was under control.

Pilots diverted to Hamilton, where they made a safe landing. As passengers exited, the pilot told them “this was the first time an Air New Zealand 737 had had a total loss of engine.”

Passengers were bused or rented cars to go back to Auckland and engineers examined the downed plane.

Australia’s CAA Investigation Points to Baggage Handlers

The April 9 emergency landing of Eagle Air/Air New Zealand Beech 1900D en route from Auckland to Whangarei, attributed to an open rear cargo door, has been blamed on untrained baggage handlers who did not lock cargo doors.

The hatch flew open on takeoff. See the link to a photograph of the open door posted on the NZ Herald

The doors tend to be left unlocked in case late bags come in; but that is not a good safety practice because a broken cargo door can smash the tail of the plane or worse.
