Zenith Zodiac Makes Emergency Landing in Southern Utah

Zenith ZodiacA plane carrying 3 persons had to make an emergency landing in Hurricane, Southern Utah, after it ran out of fuel on the morning of June 22.

The Zenith Zodiac plane took off from St. George Municipal Airport for Hurricane, with the pilot, Myron Porter, his son-in-law and 4 year old grandson aboard. While they were flying over Hurricane Valley, the aircraft started indicating low fuel. The pilot then decided to make an emergency landing in a grassy field near 869 South 400 West, Hurricane, Utah.

The plane safely landed at about 8:26 a.m. All three passengers remained unharmed. The plane sustained minor damage.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene along with the local police and Hurricane Fire and Rescue officials.

  • December 16, 2013, on JetBlue Flight 836#N661JB, the Airbus A320 arrived at the gate at JFK airport, New York, and the left wing struck the jet bridge. There was only minor damage and no injuries reported.
  • In Farmington NY on December 17, 2013, a Piper PA28#N43080 engine caught fire when the plane started up. The fire was extinguished, with unknown damage.
  • December 16, 2013, a Lancair/235#N15TG landing at John’s Island Charleston SC, when the nose gear collapsed. Minor damage was reported.
  • December 16, 2013, a Cessna/172 #N421ER was taxiing when the wing struck a light pole. The accident occurred in Wickenburg Arizona. Minor damage was reported.
  • December 16, 2013, an experimental plane, a Zenith 601#N581SL crashed in Leakey Texas under unknown conditions.

Jasper Trainee Flips in High Wind, Survives Forced Landing


DEC 18, 2012, 10:30 a.m. A Jacksonville FLight Training Zenair CH-2000 Alarus flown by a student pilot was en route from Jacksonville to Suwannee County when it made a hard landing in a Hamilton Country field.

25-year-old Mao Borui was not seriously injured when the plane landed in Jasper Florida, although it flipped and broke the nose of the plane.

When the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene, they called it a crash landing.

Ultralight Crash Kills Pilot, Student


What: LANG Zenair CH 601 Zodiac
Where: Pi?a Airport, Poland
When: May 3 2012
Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
Why: 42-year-old Thomas D. Miroslawiec, pilot instructor with the Czech branch of Pila flight school was flying with a 57 year old student, and crashed around 20.00 in a forested area. The accident occurred when the plane was banking to the left. Witnesses say they heard engine problems and saw it fall into the forest. The probably cause is being called a motor failure. TT\he prosecutor and police conducted a visual inspection of the wreck and reported that the plane had been performing a planned training flight.

The airfield is a former military airport build in the 80’s.

The plane fell in a straight line about 500 meters from the northern end of the runway. The plane is badly damaged – burned and bent. Three fire trucks, two ambulances and two police units responded to the scene of the crash.

The Zenair Zodiac is an Ultra-light.

Missing Light Craft Discovered Crashed in NZ field

What: Zenair CH 601 UL Zodiac microlight en route from Ohakea to Dargaville
Where: South Head, Kaipara NZ
When: April 1, 2012
Who: 2 aboard, 2 fatalities
Why: The microlight crashed in a field in South Head, Kaipara, NZ after sending a distress call at 1 pm. The flight went missing at 1, and was found before 7 when weather delayed the recovery of the bodies.

The owner of the field (on Fuller Rd in South Head, about 31km north of Helensville) contacted authorities after finding the microlight wreckage around two. The medic who arrived by chopper found both passengers deceased. The cockpit was crushed, and the tail shattered. There was no fire. Officials are investigating but the names of the victims have not been released.
